Get a R.A.M.....

Don't tell me you haven't flipped a RAM?

Sitting here with them side by side. Both are properly tuned. The RAM is smoother and takes less effort. Which is impressive since the Tilt really is that good.
No drag from the lock bar on the RAM. Just be sure not to rest a finger on the lock release when you try to flip it.

If you really want to see ridiculously smooth and fast find a G&G Hawk STUD somewhere. Bearings, Hawk Lock, and a flipper.

I have a RAZR, and even without a flipper, it flips like you wouldn't believe.

THERE Is no way id put those two knives in the same room, let alone the same sentence. I would melt a ram to base metals for scrap before i could bash a tilt. there is far too much difference there, not just in metallurgy, but in build quality and smoothness

The difference in the blade size makes the difference here.

Yes, but not nearly as much as the drag from the lock bar.

If you halfway open both knives and let the blades hang down, you can get the RAM's blade to swing freely, the Tilt's won't.

And please don't get me wrong, I am not bashing the Tilt (one of my favorite knives), it is just a matter of the physics of the lock mechanisms.

I'm sure Grant and Gavin wouldn't appreciate that too much.

They are certainly very different class knives. I don't know how much difference there is in build quality, Kershaw built both of them and they did an excellent job. There is a difference in smoothness though, the RAM is smoother.
The RAM is probably one of, if not the smoothest bearingless knife there is. Because of the amount of pressure from the lock bar dragging on the blade, the Tilt just can't be as smooth. This is just the result of being a frame lock, this is not a complaint.
If you try a Hawk Lock with bearings, it will change the scale you judge flippers with.

I have sat watching some pretty incredible knife makers sitting and playing with Hawk Lock flippers, and they cannot stop flipping them.

Again, not bashing the Tilt at all, it is one of the most amazing production knives ever made, period.

i think i would share ur feelings if i played with a mudd, i do concede that the lack of pressure from a lockbar does significantly decrease drag and hence makes smoother, but i have a JYD that is broken in, with both copper and poly bushings, and is smoother than any other knife i have ever played with, ram included. Maybe just a fluke, but it beats out all my other flippers, and i have had a lot. I will not, however, say that the ram is junk, its a kershaw, and by definition, i love all things kershaw. Please do not take this as me bashing the RAM

The MUDD is a fantastic knife, but the gaskets/seals keep it from being a quick deploying blade like the RAM or the Tilt.

Of course I have been sitting here flipping both of them all this time.
It is silly, but I can flip the RAM with any finger on either hand, which brings me to another great selling point of the RAM, it is easily manipulated left handed.
You can release the lock with your middle finger and close the blade with your index finger. No fingers ever need to get in the way of the blade.

Yeah MUDD is weird to open, easier to use the thumb to open it all the way.

But you gotta love the sound it makes when it opens and locks. Almost sounds like someone racking a slide.

Always thought it looked like something Darth Vader might carry as a backup.

The RAM is what got me into knives. I had one or two knives before the RAM...but the RAM changed everything.... I'm not exaggerating, I have spent thousands of dollars and countless of hours flipping and researching knives. I have been caring knives daily for years. Even tho I have knives that are far more expensive than the RAM, the RAM is still one of may absolute favorites. To this day, I still love my RAM and still finds its way in my EDC rotation.

especially with those Gill accents on the Blade...looks very Sci-Fi of a knife. It's so bonkers. Why I love it so much.

I am going to have to agree with Kneedeep on this one! I would love to own a custom G&G Hawk! They continue to be one of my favorite makers out there. The stuff they make is just so unique and ingenious, I love it! I will agree with the slide racking comment, that is such a great description!
It's so hard to explain, I just would urge you to buy one and play with it. The more you do, the more you will understand.

I have to agree when it comes to flippers the Tilt beats any other Kershaw.

Do you have a RAM?

The Tilt is phenomenal, the RAM is still faster. If you were offering to give me either knife, which would I pick? The Tilt of course.

But it is pretty simple physics, the RAM blade has less mass to accelerate. Once the lock on the RAM releases the blade during a flip, it causes zero resistance to the opening of the blade. The blade can swing freely. The Tilt blade has to deal with the resistance from the lock bar for the entire swing.

The R.A.M. is the best sub-100-dollar flipper you can buy. That's my opinion and I own copies of all the knives mentioned in this thread. :)

i think i need to get a MUDD sounds like the perfect work carry knife for crawling around in attics crawl spaces and out in the elements. after the first day of carrying a 560 it was gritty

i wish i could get a MUDD, i cant bring myself to carry my RAM yet, i just love it too much to get it dirty lol
