Get two of everything - for you and your mate!

I agree ...

If you want your wife/girlfriend/partner to enjoy the outdoors like you do, they have to be just as comfortable as you are. You can't be all snug in your $600 Feathered Friends sleeping bag while they shiver in the their $20 Wal-Mart bag. I remember the first serious trip I did with my wife [girlfriend at the time], we were hiking-up to around 6500 ft. in November. She had decent gear [marginal for winter/mountain environments] and I had exceptional equipment. She's was tough, but it was clear that if we were going to continue doing this kind of stuff together, we had to give her a gear-makeover. We dropped at least $1500 within a couple of weeks after that trip: Gore-Tex bibs, Gore-Tex gaiters, new hiking boots, down sleeping bag, new pack ... it was a small price to pay for the many happy years of hiking/climbing that laid ahead. Haha ... she was post-holing through 3 feet of snow with no gaiters ... you can imagine how cold her feet were. :D

I've been separated for over 4 years now(can't wait till the divorce is finalized):D so I don't have to worry about her anymore-she's on her own if the SHTF-but I do have an 11 year old son who I'm concerned about.
I've always been concerned about redundancy so I always buy in multiples of 2 or 3 depending on the items.
I've already started on a kit for my boy,but like a lot of today's kids it hard to peel him away from the computer or TV.When he turns 12 I'm going to give him his first knife and teach him to be responsible with it,and he's already showing some interest in my firearms:thumbup:
My only problem is I don't get him over as much as I'd like:mad:and all that time spent on the computer and TV is starting to affect his overall health. He's putting on the wrong kind of weight and I notice he gets winded pretty easily when we do get outdoors. It's a sad commentary on todays youth, but I'm not going to give up on him.;) He's already asked when I'm going to take him out to the shooting range and teach him how to shoot:D so I know he's starting to show some interest and didn't fall too far from the tree:)

When I met my wife--she owned no Knives or Guns

She has a drawer full of knives now--and I'm loving it!!

Your wife has a HR nice!

My gf won't even come near a sharp knife. The amount of times i've seen her sawing away at something with a blunt knife (don't ask) then I go up and cut in 1 shot. Tried to explain a blunt knife is more dangerous than a sharp one but she isn't having it.

As for buying multiples, yep i'm guilty as charged. I brake a lot of stuff and get asked about my gear so one way or another I go through a lot so buying two straight off just saves time. :D

:cool:yep i always have 2 maybe not the same but of equal quality my wife has her own taste. i usaly have to break it down to the top three and let her chose which she likes. well i guess i buy three cause i like to have a back up of what i like in case of loss or production changes, i hate when they tweek a product that is great just to save a few pennys. so IMO if you realy like it buy extra so if they stop making it or you lose one yur not stuck with one your not as happy with.

The only picture I have of my girl holding anything sharp is kinda disturbing... I made sure to stay away! We were branding last year, and she kept threatening me that she was going to give me my vaccines... Not too sure about a knife yet... haha, she does have a Kershaw Chive I gave her, but she hasn't used it yet.
She did tell me last night that she is excited to learn how to start a fire my way! I am excited about that..

She now loves hunting!

When the daughter and son were home we had to have four of everything, knives, bows, fishing rods (salt, fresh, fly, ultra-light). It got expensive but everyone got to participate and enjoy the outdoors. The boy and I started shooting 3D with our bows and don't you know it, the wife and daughter had to do it also. Best thing was the daughter got pretty good at it and took a few trophies, even beating a smart mouth teen boy who thought girls couldn't shoot.

We had some really good times shooting, and fishing with the whole family. That is what living is all about. Can't understand those families who all go their separate ways.

I hear you john, I have many memories of outings as a family when I was little. It's a tradition I plan to carry on with my soon to be promoted girlfriend.

im new to wilderness and survival stuff and so is my wife. I try and teach her everything i know. For example i taught her to make a fire with jute fatwood and lmf steel. I then went over natural tinders and what not. kinda fun and i cant wait to do it with my son when he gets old enough. She doesnt like knives and guns, but i have caught her using my knives when im not around and she uses my nessmuk for all our cooking. I guess she was more intimidated than anything. ... So back to the op. I only by one of everything for now but im sure once my wife and son figure out what they like and how to use it it will be 2 or 3 of everything.

I struggle to afford one of everything......we'll just have to share if the SHTF !!!!!

I have said before, I want 3 good choppers, 3 good general purpose fixed blades, 3 good neck knives, 3 good folders, etc. I am going with 3, so when my sons get older they can each choose one of the 3, and leave one for the old man.

My wife...not afraid to ask me for a knife, flashlight or multitool, but would never carry one herself. I am trying to get her on board, but it has been uphill.
