gettin' a WSKTS for Christmas

:thumbup::thumbup:Santa had one under the tree for me this year also. Took it to my parents and my dad and I sharpened every knife in the house from kitchen to hunting. He pulled out his pocket SAK to cut something a little later and sliced his finger open(not bad thankfully). We are tool junkies and this baby's a keeper! In a couple minutes from dull to hair-shaving sharp. No hype, just business. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

I read a review and someone said to keep from rounding the tips they kill the motor just as the tip reaches the belt
 
How about the only-getting-sharp-on-one-side business? On every knife, it's the same side that's not getting sharp... It's obviously me, but I don't see what I'm doing differently.
 
One side of the tool has the belt going against the grain of the knife, the other has it going with it.
I use the side where the belt is moving away from the edge and just flip the knife and run it through the same guard with the blade facing the other direction so it gets both sides sharpened by the same side of the belt.
I think that what your talking about with one side getting sharper than the other is from the different sides of the belt going different directions, but I could be wrong.
 
Santa brought me one also. Few quick thoughts:
- works quickly
- need more grades of belts, need a few steps between 220 and 6000
- quieter than expected
- makes a good working edge quickly

I have found the key is to get a good burr on one side, then start working it back on the other. Once you have the initial edge set, I will go 1 extra on the last side - ie: 5 on one side, 6 on other, etc

This is not a tool to get a ridiculous hair popping edge - but you can put a nice working edge on a whole set of dull kitchen knives in about 5 minutes.

They sell more on their website. There is a 400, 600, and an 1800 I believe.

I believe once you get used to it, you will see hair popping edges. Or at least very close to it. I have had mine for around a month or 2 and my edges are still getting sharper after more experience with it.

Problem with using the same guard, backward, is that even less of the blade gets sharp (because the guard is more in the way)... May have to try free-hand, like others have suggested. Sharpened one of my Glock knives with it tonight, and it did okay -- certainly better than I've been doing with a Lansky.

I just ordered a Work Sharp, I have heard good things about a convex edge on a BK-2.

Are there any cons vs. the standard V grind?
 
I got one too, haven't had a chance to use it yet though. I read the manual twice tonight and I am going to hit everything in the house tomorrow. I have two small kids and am curious about the dust, should I head out to the terrace or will keeping them out of the kitchen and cleaning up well be good enough? Anyone run their Remora through it? Another concern I have had is smaller blades fitting well enough to get a good edge...

It definitely produces some dust. If you're going to do multiple knives, especially, I'd head out to the terrace.
 
This thing is a tomahawk machine - I have a trail hawk I've been working the edge for some time and just never happy with it. 2mins with the work sharp and I have the start of a nice polished convex.
