Getting back in shape

Good job Proy! I'm getting back into riding this year as well. I f'd up my legs a few years ago and haven't been able to ride ever since. I have a trainer in the basement I'm using until the weather gets better. Surly makes a great frame. I have a Suly Pugsly that I built up to ride in to ride in the snow!

nice bikes! i always wanted a surly fat bike for the winter but haven't gotten around to trying one yet...i'm an avid rider - both road and mountain bikes...pounds will definitely disappear quickly. during the summer i can easily put in 100 mi a week just by riding around the city/local parks here and there on weeknights alone...that's not even counting calories burned from the mtb rides on the weekends.

Bike riding is literally one of the toughest cardio related sports there is. If you ride at least 4 times a week for an hour each day you will definitely start noticing results within a couple of months. Just look at me, I'm one of those super skinny guys with huge thighs that rides around in lycra.

I generally train 5 days a week in the mountains for about 2 hours. (mostly uphill riding) I have been racing both road and cross country mountain biking for a couple of years now, and have earned the rank of being among some of the best cyclists in California.

It sucks so much having a bike addiction and knife/flashlight addiction at the same time, since all those hobbies are freakin expensive! Especially bike hobbies. My current mountain bike rig (a custom built Niner Air 9) cost me around $8,000!

I'll have to keep that just incase my wife mentions the grand I have in a long haul trucker and a steamroller :D 12.5 miles over my goal for the month

Here's my 2011 Kona Unit. It's all tuned up and ready to ride as soon as we get some decent weather.

Way to go man keep it up..Age and weight has taken its toll on me as well and this year its going to stop...Because of my crazy work schedule I joined a 24hr gym last month..I circuit train and switch up between threadmill and bike...Lost 16 lbs my first month training 5-6 days a week down to 234...My goal is under 200 AND staying under 200 for the rest of my life..CD

Good for you! Biking is awesome and relatively low impact on the body. One way I've always looked at it is that staying in shape is a total package and lifestyle. Park a little farther away at the store, take the stairs if it's only a few flights, skip the soda once in a while etc. The little things, when combined with big things like cycling, start to really add up.

Pepsi is my weakness , but I have cut back some . I just got back from the park I ride at often . My goal for March was 100 miles , the 7.9 I rode today brought my month to date total to 143.45 miles. April's goal is 145

This is a good thread. I am getting ready for biking season here in Minnesota...and going to look at a new bike this year too. I have a mountain bike now and want a road bike for some longer distance trips. Great way to strengthen my knees from years of martial arts abuse.

Good luck with the excercise, keep up the good work! A really good way for me to get back into shape, and lose weight was going low carb. I found the Primal Blueprint works amazingingly well. Its diet and excercise, adn easy, the easiest way I ever lost weight and kept it off. You can check it out at Marksdailyapple.com. It really got me motivated to get out and do lots of hiking, which has now fueled a passion for bushcraft and knives, and carving!

I take Krav Maga classes. I should weigh less than I do, but I like beer and Italian food. A lot. I will say that I am much stronger than I was when I started, and under my spare tire I have the abs of a God. My endurance is better, too. Same for my confidence. I love it. And it helps on the hikes. Hikes I once considered grueling are now fun. We usually do hour long classes. First 30 minutes varies day to day from cardio to core. The second half is the defensive stuff and a lot of times that part is just as intense as the first. If you have the time and classes in your area, I recommend trying it out.

Just an update My first ride this year was less than 2 miles and I was sucking for breath for 10 minutes after that ride .
Friday I rode the little miami scenic trail, the first picture is my distance from the car :D yep I was 20 miles north of my car 40 miles round trip second picture is My bike at the turn around point . And I went back Sat. and rode 20 miles round trip on a single speed kind of rainy today but I still managed to ride up to the chinese joint for crab rangoon for my wife 67.5 miles in 3 days

Congratulations!

I'd been riding again until I injured my back. Once it's better and I get back from Blade I'll start in earnest.

Great work with the biking. Really like your choice in bikes :). Currently I'm riding a specialized tricross. Been a great bike. I am back to riding to class a few times a week. It's been a lot of fun and compliments my running. I had an injury a few months back and am working on getting back in shape. Need to lose around 10 more lbs.
