From nearly any method of analysis, without question, this distribution method is pathetically flawed. While the "treasure hunt" it creates feeds the manic/compulsiveness of the collectors, the artificial scarcity it creates benefits only a few people with nothing better to do than sit at a computer for hours on end refreshing their screens at the "company store" where they buy multiple items which they can then sell at a profit. The collectors are happy- they have their "scarcity" and higher prices to look forward to. The people that suffer are those that simply want to buy a working knife. Perhaps I am wrong, but it would appear that the Busse firm is not interested in servicing their needs and instead caters to the small but energetic collector community.
A simple solution would be to make, in addition to the "super special, ultra limited edition decoder ring versions", one or two standard models in large enough quantities to make them both readily available to those looking for a user, common enough to reduce their attractiveness to the collectors. Then, instead of distributing them in micro-lots at all hours of the day and night, simply place them all in the channel in large lots.
Perhaps this "treasure hunt" is full of fun and entertainment to a few, but there are many who are not interested in playing the game and just want to buy a freaking knife. By placing more in the hands of those who actually want one for use, instead of completing their super cool magic "full set of all 365 scale color variations", a wider, deeper, customer base would be created which would ultimately benefit the Busse company in many more ways than the current model. I have no doubt that this current situation is putting off many potential customers...
For those that accuse me of sour grapes, let me say that I was very lucky to have checked the company store at the exact moment the knife I was interested in was available and I purchased it. I am not looking to buy all 31 flavors, just wanted one for hunting. I can't imagine any fellow hunters I know who would play this ridiculous game and can only hope that if Jerry Busse is interested in customer, not collector, service, he addresses this situation.
