Getting my shop built on 3/29! YAY!

Next month, get some 4X4s and the necessary framing, sheathing, and shingles to put an 8' extension of the roof over the front door. It will make a great open air forging and grinding area. Cost will be small, and it should take a weekend to build. If you need plans, I will draw them for you, along with instructions.

Put your tools that can be moved on rolling carts ( Harbor Freight) and roll them out side when practical ( ands out of the way of the other equipment).

Stacy that's an awesome idea! I just might have to look into doing that!

So, just a little over 5.5 hours from start to finish, the installer just pulled out of the driveway. I am now the proud owner of a spanking new 10x12 shop! I'll try to get some pics with my crappy cam, my fiance left with the good cam this morning lol.

Now for paint, wiring, insulation, a couple of windows and a nice big workbench. :D

Picture time! I got the better camera and bright sunny skies today. Here she is:

I'm about to head to town for paint, wiring/breaker box/recepticles/lighting and go pick up my windows!

I think the work bench is going to go in the very back on the 10' width. Not sure if I'm going the full width or not. Still planning it out.

LOL One thing I just noticed is that the back wall is not framed like the sides. Well, I'll have to fix that, not only for insulating but for hanging shelves and such

That's looking good Craig. Maybe a corner with those cement boards instead of drywall for hot work? I would also opt for smaller windows but more of them high up to give you as much wall space as possible. (Someone recently posted pics of his shop with a window setup a little like that, can't remember who).

To save money, I'm going to use some recycled aluminum storm windows from my mom's house. Going to paint the frames white and put them a little higher than normal but not too much. It's being painted and setup to match my house :)

Seam caulking complete, getting ready to do a little painting before dark. Fed Ex just dropped off my buffer about an hour ago! :D

Thanks! No, I hadn't checked out HFs yet...I had been looking at the ones (simply for reference) in my Penn State Ind. catalog. I might have to take a peek at HF's especially with a reprintable 20% coupon! I'm also planning on possibly getting a nice mini/midi lathe to do pens, pepper/salt grinders and other smaller things on.

My cousin sent me a email ad for a NICE Rockler mini-lathe w/ extension bed for $209 and I found an online coupon for free shipping! WOO! :)

Before you put a thing in that shop, put solid blocks under the base. Use a 4X4 and a fulcrum and you can have your fiancé lift a corner while you change the blocks. Those hollow blocks won't hold up.

3 out of the 8 used are hollow, the rest are solid. They should be fine. The hollow ones aren't like you get at Lowe's for a buck and change. These are old, extremely heavy blocks with probably double the wall thickness of the newer, lighter blocks...if not more.

Thanks for looking out though! :)

Well, got some more painting done and went to Lowe's. Just got back with wiring, switches, outlets, (4) 4' dual-tube shop lights and a few other things.

I think the 4 shop lights should produce a great deal of light in there but, in addition to those, I also picked up 2 screw in light fixtures with pull chains for directly above my work bench. That way if I need more light, I have it.

Now, I just have to figure up my overall load draw so I can go get my breaker box. I plan on having a HT oven later down the road so the box will have 220 available.

Finished all the outside painting except trimwork, that will be tomorrow. Got all exterior and interior panel seams/joints caulked (actually did that before paint).

Just placed my order for the DeWalt porta-band from ToolKing. Tomorrow I go to pick up my drill press from HF. YAY!

Well, I waited to pick up the HF drill press till my Craftsman 2x42 came in. Did all that today. I got the 12spd press from HF @ $99.00 (original $149.99) + 20% off which brought it down to $79.99. I used that money saved to get the 2 year replacement warranty on it.

I also picked up a few things I had coupons for: 12" ratcheting bar clamps for $1.99 each (x4), digital calipers for $9.99 (originally $29), 4" drill press vice on sale for about $10, and a couple of those vise-grip type drill press clamps for $7.** each.

As I was walking out I looked over their open box table, and they had a mini-cut off saw for $15.00. I thought it would be a really neat little piece of equipment for cutting pin-stock for knives. So, I got it and I got 5 days to try it out and bring it back if I don't want it.

Building update: outlets boxes are set, wiring is in the works, shop lights are going up in a couple days, paint is almost finished. Going to start laying out my workbench plans and building it here shortly. The floor that came in the shop is only 3/4" osb, and its a little weak in places so I'm going to go over it with another layer of 7/16" osb when I finish the walls.

Then, install windows, A/C unit and all the other good stuff! :) It's coming along for sure!

Update :). I just finished sheathing the interior walls and caulking all the seams this evening. Also installed my 2 windows. All thats left before I start my bench is an extra layer of 3/4 OSB t&g on the floor since the decking that came with the building is a little soft in spots.

Also...apparently (4) 4' dual-bulb shop lights is going to be WAY overkill on lighting in this 10x12 shop! I hooked up one tonight and its pretty damn bright! I may take one back and only have 3. Leave one unplugged and when I need more light I can plug it in. Or put a switch in-line on it. Or something :).

Anyway, I'll start my bench tomorrow. Going to go to my old house that the state bought and remove a couple flush, solid core doors to use as bench top material. Thanks to whomever had that idea in a workbench thread!!

Pics shortly.

Waiting for the fiance to get home with the camera. I'll try to get a couple with my phone in the mean time. Be back in a few.

Ok here we go, not the best pics but it'll do.

Shot of a few tools I have acquired to get started. Craftsman 2x42, HF 12spd drill press, DeWalt PortaBand, HF 8" buffer, digital calipers, drill press vise, mini-chop saw, etc.

And here is the inside of the shop:

Don't mind the gap in the bottom wall board at the back of the shop. It'll be covered by the next layer of flooring. I was cutting and a wasp landed on my arm, causing me to wig out (already been stung once during this project) and I missed my cut lol.

This is only 1 shop light lit up...its friggin bright! There are 11 outlets total. 9 around the perimeter 4' up, and 2 in the rafters for the shop lights. 3 wired circuits for outlets and 1 for lights. 10/3 buriable cable from my power pole (12' away) supplies the 100a service box. 110V wired now, ability to go 220 later on when I get a HT oven.

AC unit is going into the window on the right. And I'll need it! It cooks in there during the day time!
