Giant Golden Orb Spider

My wife has always wanted to visit Australia. It is highly unlikely that we will ever be able to afford to do so, unfortunately. However, my wife is also deathly afraid of even the tiniest little spider! She swears that they are all out to "get her". She is totally unreasonable and irrational about them. If I show here these pictures, I'm certain I'll never hear another word from her about ever wanting to visit Australia again! For that matter, little spiders I don't mind, 'cause they eat "bad" bugs, but those creatures you guys have down under even freak ME out! I'd want a 1911 on one hip, my ASH-2 or TGLB on the other, my Colt M4 for distance work and my Remington 870 for closer work!!!! Those things down there are absolutely FREAKY!!!!!!

I suppose it's none of my business, but why do you kill them?

Dont have too kill them, but they will bite you (non venomous), and they are NOT lacking in numbers and are found everywhere. I will leave them alone if they arent somewhere im inhabiting but that picture was inside a hunting shack and have enough mice, squirrels, and bats flying around me trying too sleep there so will remove whatever i can out of the pest equation if possible.

My grandpa had a huge boat house years ago and in the spring/summer it would be covered with hundreds of adult dock spiders. Dominant spider spieces around here, their not in short supply.

OK, thanks for answering.

Most suspended web spiders are harmless.... that said nothing teaches a novice Juet Keen Do faster than walking into a spider web at night. Screaming flaying arms and legs and big leaps through the air....it was Bruce Lee's secret !!!

The White Tip Spiders we get in the house from time to time worry me more than any other. I get plenty of Red Backs and some Funnel Webs (only in the garage/outside so far) but all in all they are OK. The bloody White Tips will stalk you in your sleep...!!!!! Fuggers... !!

Those Australian spiders are the probably reason Andy has to go to Africa and crawl through hippo tunnels and chase elephants for rest and relaxation.

That's a pretty lady.

I don't particularly like spiders, but I do recognize some of them are particularly beautiful. And they are useful. Anything that will eat a mosquito or horsefly is not my enemy.

so did you just let her be? Or get her out somehow?

I just leave them alone. Sometimes I catch them and put them outside. You have to be careful when catching them as they are quite delicate and injure very easily. I used to be terrified of them, but understanding them for what they are has given me a respect for them. I have been bitten by huntsmans many times, and although it stings like all get out, they are harmless. I have hurt myself worse with Busse knives :D They have just as much right to be here as we do. Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly lovey dovey with them, but they're just doing their thing and I give them their space. When it invades mine, like one did in bed one night and it bit me on the elbow, I'll relocate them.

As Andy mentioned above, it's the little white tails that are a problem. They have a bite that has a similar effect to the North American Brown Recluse spider I believe. Nasty. They'll end up gassed or squished.

White tips, eh? They sound bad. I know the recluse can be bad juju when it bites.

ok, maybe I am the weird guy here but I like spiders. Maybe it was the day I got bit by a Black Widow. My hand swole up to the size of a grapefruit. That widow was more than 2 inches across. It stung the back of my hand while I was reaching for a faucet inside a gas station island. I felt bad right after I squashed on my hand. But it was a reaction. I use to pick up tarantulas in south america as a kid and they were very mild. But they were huge. Bigger than a dinner plate.

How does it taste? A little garlic salt can be magic.

I'm just glad me and that spider are oceans apart. I can see myself riding a trail on a four wheeler and that thing hit me in the face like one of those face sucking aliens from the movie Alien!!

Spiders and I have an uneasy truce.
You stay in the yard and leave me alone, I leave you alone.
I've got plenty of flashlights and I ALWAYS take one at night in the area's spiders tend to spin their web, and it's usually not a problem.

The Garage is a DMZ, and if you're a Black Widow or Brown Recluse, I terminate with extreme prejudice. Anyone else gets a pass or moved if needed.

The house is off limits, and anyone with 8 legs inside gets the nuclear option (Dyson Vacuum)

To be fair, he did say he got bit. And I bet it stung like a by-atch!

Cobalt- You got BIT. Spiders don't sting.

lol, you are right, the black widow stung me. Though the tarantulas could have bit me with their huge fangs and didn't/

Here is a south american tarantula, truly gentle giants
