GiantMouse GM4/GMP4

Guess people liked the GMP4, I checked it about 15 minutes after release and it was sold out already. The regular GM4 is still available though, I ordered one out of curiosity but having some regret now, I keep forgetting how small a 2.5" blade will be.

A better Pilar with upgraded materials is pretty much the Olamic Busker.
This. I have one, and it's a tremendous little knife. I won't be in the market for this new GiantMouse offering, even though I do like their designs.

I've been carrying my ZT 0900(the GM4 is damn close in dimensions) daily for a little while now and I'll say I'm pretty impressed. I thought it might a hair on the small side too, but the 2.7 inch blade is doing the same chores all my bigger blades do without any problems at all.

That's good to know. I had a 900, bought it on a whim on clearance but never carried it so I traded it but I think it felt pretty good in the hand.

Tempted to pick one up, but I think I’ll wait for the secondary market.

No. It’s not. GMs all tend to go for $50-100 under retail on the exchange except for the “pirate” versions.

I'll grant that things might have changed, at one time that was the case. In any case, I wish you luck getting your hands on one when you're ready.

It’s consistently stayed the case on the G1, GM2, and GM3. Pretty clear pricing patterns to those who watch the exchange.

I concur, Halden. I have no experience with the GM1 or 2, but recently bought a GM3 on the Exchange for $65 under the original price. I saw another there not long after for about $10 more than I paid.

BTW, I can't find anything about the current Pirate version to distinguish it from the regular model other than the stone washing and different ano finish. Certainly doesn't seem like $50 worth to me. They sold out, though, so it only proves the shrewd marketing of this lifestyle-branded line of knives.

I do like my GM3 anyway--very nice smaller knife with nice detailing, well-designed and executed. I wonder how long it'll take my newer Shiro NeOn Ultra-lite to push it out of the nest, though.

Hmmm. I’m learning new things it seems. I got a little confused by Mo2’s post but I think I get what they’re saying. The original thread is about GiantMouse and their release of the GM4/GMP4. I think they got off topic with the talk of viper knives. They’re concerned with the lack of quality in Viper knives but more specifically the manufacturer (Tecnocut) which I gather is the same manufacturer who makes Giant Mouse Knives, correct?

I’m curious about the them supposedly using a mix of grade 5 and 4/CP ti parts. Where did we read or hear this? I completely agree with the frustration if they stated all parts were grade 5 and they weren’t. Did they explicitly state the above or perhaps did we just assume all parts were grade 5? Is this the case for only viper knives or do we think it’s the case for GiantMouse knives as well? I’m legitimately curious myself.

From what I can see, grade 5 is about 40% stronger than grade 4 which is pretty significant to me. I mean, yeah like Mo2 said. You wouldn't want grade 4 to be used on the lock side but something like a back spacer wouldnt be a huge deal. But I get what they were saying. Why not just use all grade 5 if you have it. Let’s say for a second that Tecnocut was using two different grades. Wouldn't having to juggle two different manufacturing processes for each grade offset the cost they save on material?

But getting back to the original thread post.
- Is this an original style knife? (not to be confused with original design) Not really.
- Is this an original combination of materials? Definitely not.
- Is the fit and finish going to be good? I dont doubt it!
- Is the blade small? Relatively, yes. But! Keep in mind, Jesper and Jens know it’s small. They specifically designed it that way. They even said on their website in the description that it’s not a camping knife but an edc knife to carry at work or around town.

I can’t argue with your opinion on it being a “lifestyle-branded line of knives”. I would have also like to see there be something a little more unique in the pirate version other than a different finish. However, i do think the $50 difference is justified. The PVD job (which isnt the same as anodizing) is a lot more expensive and time consuming.

I didn't check the Giant Mouse's site for complete information on the knives--I referred to @Hackenslash 's helpful post on Page 1 which mentioned "dark stonewash" for a finish on the pirate edition. Now that you've enlightened me, I better understand the price difference as the knife features both the not-inconsiderable addition of a PVD coating plus stone washing. I'm not big on coatings, but my Olamic Wayfarer 247 has the similar "Stealth" finish which is very attractive, nice in hand, and wear-hiding.

That said, as much as I like my GM3 and am really unconcerned about the marketing aspects, there's not much to either version of the GM4 that draws me in.

Same here. My GM3 pleases me for sure and it's a favorite, but the new one. Well, I dig it, but I will wait to see what's next. As an aside, that Shirogorov you have makes me drool. And would make me poor. Happy, but poor.

Thanks. Not sure which Shiro you're referring to, but each one I have made me drool, made me happy, and made me poorer. There's no shortage of room in the same boat, brother. It's crowded but big enough for all of us here. More like a ship of fools, actually.

As much as I like their style, especially the gm3, giant mouse will be a no go for me until they finally get an European retailer. Ob well..
