GiantMouse GM4/GMP4

Same. My GMP4 should be arriving any minute. No one has posted a youtube video yet. Waiting for those to start rolling in.
Keep us posted. Even though this one's not for me, I'll be interested in your first impressions--especially your take on the finish. The quality on my GM3 is impeccable and I hope you really love your GMP4!

Out of the box --

Blade well-centered.

Opens and closes smoothly.

Flipper only; no manual opening.

I'd call the detent medium; definitely not on the strong side but just fine for me.

Sharp, with grinds that are just about even.

It's good-looking.

Jimping on the flipper tab and a small amount on blade spine and backspacer.

Spine very slightly chamfered.

Open-pillar construction except for a relatively short backspacer.

Clip looks good, works well; in pocket, shows a lot of knife.

Dark scales show marks.

In size, thinner and longer than either the Techno or the Pilar. Weighs less than the steel Pilar and feels about the same as the Techno but with a thinner blade.

About the same length as the Strider PT, one of my favorites, with a much wider blade.

This is a three-finger grip for my size medium hands; four if I use the blade choil.

I prefer this darker-skinned version but $50 extra has me asking why.

I own the GMP1 and the GMP4 seems comparable in quality and a good match for its older, bigger brother. I find little brother easier to flip open.

GM markets these in limited quantities, which increases their appeal for collectors.

I like it and plan to keep it but wouldn't consider it a must for my collection except for my love of 3-inch and under folders.

Blade length is 2.5 but it looks like the cutting edge would be much more. I'm also interested to know the lengh of the handle that you can use to grip it.

The handle is 4", but that's not the "grippable" length. Looks to me it could fit the hand like a domino without using the forward choil.

Bronze ano version looks great, Canada has antiquated ideas about folding knife laws so I'll probably never see one.

My initial impression is that this is a typical GM knife. Really good fit and finish, attractive design, good flipping action but not drop shuty given the blade length, medium detent and great blade shape. Where it differs from its predecessors (for me) is in the ergos, especially being a smaller knife. If they would have increased the overall length slightly and included more of a choil it would have been great. Without a choil it is very hard for me to get a good grip on this knife (larger hands), a lanyard is a must. I'll play around with it for a while to see if my view changes but I don't think this ones going to make it.
Size reference, absent is the GM2 which I sold off.

The fit-and-finish is near perfect, perfectly centered, sits well in the pocket, firm lockup... Great knife especially considering the size–I've never had a flipper this small. I have medium hands and can get a 3 3/4 finger grip but am considering a lanyard. The 2.5 inch blade has a cutting edge of 3 inches due to the amount of belly.

Anyone have a Benchmade Anthem thing going on with the pocket clip? Where it sits just slightly off of the frame not actually touching?

Yes, I was going to try to do something about this...

Fit & finish
It’s near perfect. Tolerences are pretty tight. Blade is centered perfectly and has no play. The screws are fitted nicely throughout the nife. The lock bar locks up nicely at about 15-20% with no lock stick.

I do have to say that the finish is nice. I like how the finish on the blade, in certain light, is exactly the same as the finish on the handles. I totally understand the justification for the extra $50 increase for the finish. With that being said, I would also like for everyone to understand that the GMP isn’t a better knife or really any different besides finish. So for anyone bummed that they were stuck with only the GM4, don’t be. They’re both equally great knives and everyone should be super excited to have one.

Attention to detail
Like GiantMouse says, there are definitely details put into this knife. I wouldnt necissarily say jimping is a special detail so I’ll exclude it. (They’re there and work fine). What im talking about is the logo on the inside of the handle, the custom number on the inside of the back spacer, the new clip design, the jimping on the back of the tip of the clip. That’s right, there’s jimping on the backside of the clip.

The only real downside that I feel they missed was also with the clip. The clip doesnt fully meet the handle so it sometimes will ping against the knife. There’sanother small detail with the clip but isn’t such a huge deal. Just a detail I thought they would have taken care of. The section of the clip that screws onto the handle doesnt fully meet the handle. There’s a small gap. This is because the curvature of the handle whereas the section of the clip that meets the handle is flat.

Ergonomics & Size
This seems to be where all the fuss is. I’m not going to lie. I was optimistic but have to agree that despite knowing the dimensions beforehand, I’m not a huge fan of the ergonomics of this knife. This is partly due to the thin handles making it an overall thin knife. While they’re nice handles, I would have liked it if they were thicker.

The size is actually not a big issue like I was expecting. I do have smaller hands so the handle is not bad. The blade length and cutting edge is actually enough to get every day tasks done. One thing to keep in mind is that it was purposefully designed this way. Jesper and Jens aren’t trying to recreate the GM1 or any of the other models. I also don’t think they’re trying to perfect the flaws of previous models for the sole purpose to create that perfect edc. This is a completely new and purposefully different knife all on it’s own. I think people lose sight of that when they start getting all upset about the size. They even say on the site that it is not a camp knife but something you can carry to work or around town.

Action
This is probably the feature of the knife that is the least exciting right out of the box. This thing does not flip well at all. Perhaps the pivot screws are a little too tight on this one? I’ll continue to use it as is but may eventually loosen the tension if it doesnt get better. The detent of the blade is strong enough for me so I see no issue there. There’s definitely no blade fall but that’s another one of those things where I could care less. Mine definitely doesnt have any blade fall when closing, again, probably because the pivot screw is too tight.

Overall thoughts
This is my first GiantMouse knife so I have no other model to play favoritism with. I’ll let others out there compare the models and pick their favorite. With that being said, I think this is a great knife (pending further investigation of the action). Yes it is a small knife but if you expect that or are looking for a knife of this size, you’ll be more than happy hunting for one of your own. While the style and materials of the knife are not super original, the design and exectution of it is.

I like it and think it’ll have a place in my pocket as well as my collection for a long time.

Hey, thanks for the great write-up. I agree that they could have done a better job on the clip meeting the scales, but otherwise it looks like another fine quality job. Looking forward to what they have coming out next. For my two cents, I hope for a little shift on the scales. The Ti has been lovely, but lets aim for something a little different.

I was hoping this one would have more of a sheepsfoot/wharncliffe blade to satisfy the many who wanted a better Pilar with upgraded materials. I love my GM1 but this is another miss for me. I so wish Vox had sold the Pilar design to Giant Mouse. :(
+1 from me

The flipping action itself is ok but the problem is finger placement. The detent is sensitive to pressure applied inadvertently to the lock bar and when you've adjusted your fingers to deal with that issue, they're not in the best position for flipping. The more I use it though the better I get at placing my fingers in just the right places

You make a good point in your overall thoughts, having no others GM knives to compare it to I could see it being an exciting knife. For me the GM1 was and still is one of my favorite knives, so no matter how I look at the new models I am always subconsciously judging it against the GM1.

I think you’re probably right. I noticed that last night. It’s just hard not having your fingers on the lock bar with it being such a small knife. Still love it though!

Upon further inspection of the pocket clip, we find more examples of attention to detail.

I fortunately picked up a GMP4 here in the forums, and it should arrive next week. I'm very excited to own my first GM knife. The above comments make me want a GM1 as well. Thanks all and thanks BladeForums!
