hi guys and gals,
My husband is getting a kmg10 package from Beaumont Metal Works in the next week and I know he hasn't ordered any grinding belts yet. He will making making knives with this new grinder. I have rummaged through his notes and see that he noted 3m, norton brands. 2X72. I'd like to get him some nice belts so that he will be up and running. I'd like to get a few of each of the ones that are considered durable. I'd also like a good selection for various purposes. I see that he noted leather and Scotchbrite? Could you provide a list the brands and specific item numbers and quantities that would be considered a nice starting point? Where would I order these getting a good price in the process? We live in the Denver area and I don't think that these would be available locally. I very much appreciate you recommendations and expertise. Thank you.

Welcome to Bladeforums! Your husband is a lucky man. :)

It's a bit hard to select specific belts for someone else, but since he noted leather and Scotchbrite, get him one of each (they're a bit pricy but last a long time) and perhaps a gift certificate so he can pick what he wants for actual grinding belts. I'm sure the usual suppliers would be happy to accommodate you in that regard.

Here is one place where you can get some belts: http://www.trugrit.com/ I would suggest XY and Z, but I don't know which yet either
If you are up for some reading, check out this thread for some suggestions (ffrom trugrit.com) from members here on this site

A gift card is good. He can get exactly what he wants as far as belts go, but can also get other supplies as well.

Finally found a list of places

Give them a call and explain what you're doing and what he noted down. Right now there's some question about the Norton Blaze belts leaving black crud on the grinder so you might want to skip them even though they're VERY popular and work very well. Maybe get him one to try, since they really are one of the most popular and the issue doesn't seem to develop for everyone. I'd make sure to get at least a few of the 3m Trizact CF belts, aka, gator belts, for the mid grits, A65 down to A30. I love them. Keep in mind, even just getting one of each for a basic selection, including the leather and scotchbrite, you'll be into the $100+ range very fast, so depending on how much you plan to spend you might want to prioritize the unique belts and let him pick up the general duty stuff. Or go for the wide selection so he can try out a variety and then order in quantity of the ones he decides he likes.

this is the site i use and the stuff i buy
by norton he ment ceramic orange belts get him this in 40,80,120,180 grit i recommend 2 of each to get him started http://www.supergrit.com/products/products_belts-ceramic.asp
scotch brite belts r surface conditioning belts pick the grits u want to get him i recommend all three 1 of each they last for months http://www.supergrit.com/products/products_belts-ceramic.asp
and its hard to get leather belt for 2 x 72 this is the only place that has it but there 45 dollars http://www.supergrit.com/products/products_belts-ceramic.asp
and hes a lucky man getting a grinder like that and of coarse for having u to
i recommed just getting the stuff i told u from super grit there the best site

My startup list would be (all in 2X72 size):

Structured abrasive Belts (Blaze, Cubitron, CubitronII, ceramic, etc.) - 60,100 grit- three each
Gator (3M Trizac) - 300, 100, 45, 36 (Note, these are micron sizes, not grit size) - three each
Blue Zirconia - 100,120,220 grit - 6 each
Silicon Carbide - 2 20, 400 grit - J or J-flex weight - 12 each
One FINE scotch brite belt
One leather stropping/honing belt.
One felt polishing/buffing belt ( used with buffing compound)
Note: Not all suppliers carry the leather and felt belts, but they are the least useful to a new maker anyway. Leaving them off the list is OK. Hubby can get them later when he is ready for them.

If you call POP's ( James Poplin) he will fill this whole order and ship it right out to you tomorrow. He is a great guy, and really helpful.

You can give him a basket full of his favorite wine , or can give him different variety of wines and roses . This will be a great idea.

Patty Patty Patty ... wine and roses are the last thing he is going to be thinking about after seeing a new grinder... lol. Men are(for the most part) a different animal. Seeing that his wife invested the time to research something that probably means little to her but soooo much to him... would mean MUCH MUCH more on an emotional/bonding level. Sounds strange but its true... having a wife that supports your "guy" interests is the Holy Grail for us. Monica is doing a wonderful thing for her man.

I would follow Bladsmth's advice and call Pop. 706.678.5408

+1 for calling Pop's Knife Supply!

You could also ask Pop, or his wife, Kay (who also answers the phone). Tell them what you want to spend and what it's for and they will put together a nice mix of belts and ship it right out...

Rick speaks the truth. My wife has no interest in my hobby at all, but the times that she mentions (with no small amount of pride) that "my husband makes coool knives" makes up for all the indifference she exhibits whem I show her the works in progress. Were she to make the bold move that Monica is making (finding out what I need and ordering it for me), I would truly consider that a gift above all others, even if she spent considerably less for it.

Wine and roses would be a very poor substitute.

Monica, I agree with Rick. Patty's heart is in the right place but if flowers could elicit tears in a woman, belts for his grinder may do the same for a man. ;)

Stacy's suggestion to call Pop is spot on, he just got a little carried away with quantities. Here is a revised list that is reasonable I think.

...(all in 2X72 size):
Structured abrasive Belts (Blaze, Cubitron, CubitronII, ceramic, etc.) - 60,100 grit- 2 each
Blue Zirconia - 100, 220 grit - 2 each

Your husband is a lucky man indeed.

Monica this is a great idea. For many years Christmas and birthday presents have centered around the shop for me. Got a new forge this past Christmas for example. This does mean a lot to a guy. If you can afford it Stacy's suggestions are right on, heck if you're gonna be a bear might as well be a grizzly. If not Patrice suggests a reasonable alternative.

The reason I had larger quantities is that a new maker will eat up SC belts fast. Two may not do a complete knife if they don't have good grinding skills yet.
Pat's suggestion would be good for a sampler to ship with a grinder, but he will soon be out of belts.

The gators are great belts, and worth every cent. Money well spent equals time well enjoyed.

BTW, I concur that this chap has a jewel of a wife. If I knew she was in the US (No location in her profile), I would send her husband a gift pack of knife making materials.

I don't have anything useful to add; I just think it's awesome that you are doing this!!! I couldn't do it without my wife!

36-grit belts sometimes make me cry.

+1 on Pops. Great source for belts.

I meant happy tears Erin. ;)

Stacy, I'd say that this gentleman is getting enough toys as it is. On the other hand, Monica would deserve a little gift. And you are a jeweler after all. :D

Hi guys and gals,
Thank you so very much for all the help. I checked some of the recommended sites and prices and it seems that Pops is very reasonable. I decided to go with all 3m since that is what they carry and since the Blaze are leaving some black residue. With his luck he will get all gooped up. Here is what I came up with. I dont understand much of anything but I tried to read through the various suggestions carefully.

I am OK? Thank you very much for the help. Does anyone have a discount code for the Pop's site? I would greatly appreciate this.

Looks like a good package. He will be pleased.

I am not in the market, but a few of the guys here will probably want to know:)
Do you have a sister?
