Gift for husband-need help please. Thanks

Wow.... just, wow. I gotta know who this guy is. At some point after he receives this stuff, you have to tell us. If he is not a member yet, make him join so we can ask him more about you and your sisters.... Ha!

This is one of those threads that make you smile. I wouldn't be doing this for a living if it wasn't for my wife.

Thank you very much for the help and compliments. My husband is a great guy. He is very lucky to have me and I am very lucky to have him. Peas in a pod we are!

I looked on the Pops site at steel. Seems only logical that he would need some of this. Is Pops a good place to buy steel for knives?

What type of steel and what dimensions would be good for him to start on? I'll likely get 1 piece for now. Thank you guys again for the help. My husband is out of town for a bit but he will be on this site when he returns hopefully with the goodies in hand.

That looks good Monica. But don't worry too much about it. The thought alone and the work you went through to do this will be what he appreciate most. Even if my wife did this and bought all the wrong stuff I'd be tickled pink. If he is not, send him to us, we'll straighten him up. ;)

I also have the most supportive wife you could ask for. And prettiest and most intelligent...the list goes on. :D (And no, she is not reading the forums ;))

To echo everything everyone else has said, I think you've got a great starting list put together. I have bought a lot of belts (and other stuff) from Pop's, but I prefer to buy steel from Aldo Bruno (njsteebaron.com). As for starter steel, my recommendation would probably be 1085 or something like that, but it depends a bit on what type of knives he wants to make. Give Aldo a call, he's a super-nice guy to talk to, and will definitely be able to put you on the right track - (973) 949-4140

Aldo is the man for steel.

Monicaaaaaaaa..... are you putin' us on here?.... sounds too good to be true for even the luckiest man on Earth!

Awesome!

If you're just getting a bar of steel for him to grind on, and throwing it in with the order since you're already shopping with Pop's, which seems to be the case- I'd recommend cpm145cm, 5/32" x 1-1/2" x 3'. That's $48 in the steel section. My reasoning: it's a great stainless steel for the beginner as well as being still one of the best cutters, it's reasonably priced, the size would be OK for anything from folder blades to hunting knives. He'll get several mid sized blades out of this bar.

Let me add that I applaud you as well. I am also one of those who wouldn't be doing this full time if not for the support of my excellent and long-suffering wife!

I think that for a hobbyist or maybe even a part time professional (or even a newbie proffesional that the novelty of being a knifemaker hasn't worn off of yet) the belts etc., are a very nice gesture,… but may not win you any brownie points if he’s a seasoned full time professional.

I personally like Patty’s idea better. I’d take the wine, roses, romantic evening and a wife that stays out of my shop and business. :)

Ditto what Salem said. Pop's has CPM-154 (a good quality stainless steel) in many sizes. 5/32X1.5X36 is a good starter bar. He can make kitchen knives, hunters, fillet, etc. from that. He can sent the blades out for hardening to many places.

Monica, you truly are a Diamond. A precious gem to behold for eternity.

Congrats to you and your husband for finding one another.

My advice for newbies and wannabies,... keep your wives and girlfriends out of your "man cave" and don’t let them get involved with your business,... before it's too late. Just put food on the table and keep a roof over your heads.

I learned the hard way on my first wife.

Sorry if that sounds old fashioned and harsh.

Good point Tai, although the only time my wife even wants to come into the shop is to put clothes in the dryer! When it's time to cook dinner, she usually calls the shop phone... although the house and shop are about 15 feet apart.

My wife got me a power hammer for my b-day last year, so I can't complain about her involvement just now.

I see where you guys are going with this. I'm not going to smoke the flowers They're just to look at. It was a symbolic gesture… I almost cried. Then she took me out for diner at my favorite seafood restaurant. Not one word was mentioned about my work. Bless her heart.

She knows I hate talking shop when I’m off duty… probably one of the things that attracted her to me. She doesn’t feel any pressure to pretend to be interested, and I wouldn‘t want her to.

Monica, congratulations for such a loving and caring relationship with your significant other. I can say women like you are few and far between. I had very special lady once, that you remind me of her. God decided that he wanted her more at such and early age. Enjoy life and God bless you and yours!
