Gift to son-in-law to be

What does he like to do? Is he a hunter? What does he hunt? Elk, deer, pigs, quail, turkeys, rabbits? Is he a fisherman? Is he a backpacker, going on long overnight hikes? Is he a carpenter, tinkerer, pitmaster, weekend warrior, or accustomed at all to using tools? Will he break it trying to pry open an ammo crate? Is a knife, of any kind, something he would actually carry and use or would it live in a drawer forever? Would he like a massive Bowie, chopper or tomahawk? Or would a sleek gentleman's folder be more his speed?

Lots of questions because there are lots of options. We're living in an incredible time of plenty - there are knives of every size and flavor to meet any need or desire. Any details about the lucky fell will help narrow down your options.

Spyderco C230GP is never offensive and always handy. Occasionally a sprint run can be found.

He would not fit in any particular category that you mentioned. Not that he would be opposed, he just has not had a ton of that type of experience in his life yet. This time, I am looking more for a nice sleek gentleman's folder/something that he is proud to own and show off and something that gets his collection growing in a more tasteful direction. He carries his budget knives everyday and loves to.

That is another knife I have had my eye on!

That's a cheap dowry, my friend. :)

Since it's Arizona, get him a nice custom and unique fixed blade. Several of our makers will do a great job for your budget.

Any particularly you'd suggest?

Gift to future son-in-law?

A lifetime prescription to extra-strength aspirin.

LOL!!!

For a new knife owner I would start with a blade length of 3” or less. Maybe a Mini Bugout with Carbon Fiber scales and S90v blade. Great gents blade.
if he is an outdoorsman, a nice custom fixed blade.

Perfect, that narrows it down. It sounds like the gift you're really trying to give is a lifelong addiction to knives, so you should also set up an interest bearing account for him to use to house his knife funds.

I don't have much experience with gentleman's folders, but the Tactile knife you mentioned on your first post looks like a good one. Maybe a Hogue Deka in Magnacut with some custom scales would work as well (and fall well within your budget).

Protech makes some excellent automatic knives (switchblades) that are legal in Arizona. I'm partial to the Magic BR-1, but they have lots of options. These should also fit your budget.

My favorite is Paul / CPE_Knives CPE_Knives ... this is the last one he made for me:

But I can recommend at least a hand-full. Check out this thread: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/show-pride-in-our-bf-makers.1887515

Best,

Roland.

$375 puts you tantalizingly close to a plain small Sebenza.

That is what I bought my son in law, but that was years ago.

Caution, that knife sparked a knife addiction in my SIL that persists to this day. He shows me a new custom of some sort nearly everytime I see him!

Good luck!

Edited to add a Spyderco Para3 , especially a premium steel or exclusive, would be good too.

He’s only 24, so he would probably like something a little “crazy” looking.
Something classy, American made, and extremely durable….and within your budget… Get him one of these…he will love it. This is the knife that started my addiction, I was 25 years old when I bought it.

My general thought is to get a standard modern edc, or modern slipjoint.

Spyderco native v or chaparral, Benchmade bugout,

Or a modern slipjoint. Lionsteel 2 blade jack (or if they are wine drinkers, the 3 blade version). Or a Benchmade proper.
