glad most knifemakers share!

This is the kind of thing that makes me really question whether I should bother sharing the stuff that I do.
Nick, I hope you realize that for every one newbie that thinks you're obligated to share, there are a hundred like myself that understand that you do it out of the goodness of your heart and we really appreciate your taking the time and effort to share your craft. I'm sure without your videos and the other information shared on these forums, myself and a lot of others would still be floundering around the bottom of the learning curve. Many thanks!!!

What? someone put a little snark in their reply on the introwebs? I find that hard to believe ;0)

:(MR.Wheeler,

I was just looking for some advice. I did not demand or feel owed anything. I am new to this was not sure if I had offended him.

I am 51 year Navy vet that lost much of the use of my hands in combat and I was looking for some assistance in setting up my work station since this knifemaker used wooden jigs to grind his blades. I can't free-hand grind...I just don't have the facility with my hands that others do now.

I have not posted on the site since 2012 because I was on active duty in combat or recovering in rehab from my wounds. I am sorry that I "disturbed you" sir.

Fellas, having read all the replies here I am saddened and disappointed at the ugliness and egotistic attitude I see. Those of us that have put our lives on the line for each other have a little more respect and lot more tolerance for others.

Why anyone would want to go onto a forum and "take someone to the woodshed"--Nathan the Machinist--is beyond me. I guess I am a grown man and just expect too much of others.

No worries, I wont be back on the this forum to "disturb" any of you or be "taken to the woodshed". Its okay if you want to trash me now as i will not be back and having served as a Navy corpsmen/medic in a Marine recon unit, I have seen more ugliness, than i care to share and don't feel the need to come back and see all your degrading comments.

Maybe a day or two of picking up body parts, digging dna tags and dog tags out of human goo and stitching up little children would give you all a more sober view of human dignity!

I share a ton of what I do... most of it in fact... because I want to... but I don't think that it's an obligation.

Why do so many people feel they are OWED information from another knife maker?

You've been registered here since 2012, and this is your first post... calling out a maker because he didn't give you the answers that you think HE OWES YOU???

That's very disturbing to me.

Well Said Mr. johnferrante.

I took your comments/question as you intended them and was also very much caught off-guard by the overwhelming negativity/arrogance of the responses, and failing to give you the any benefit of any doubt. I too am a veteran and perhaps because of that I am used to giving more-than-complete answers to those subordinates/newbies who asked for techniques to improve their skills, because their well being/lives might well hang in the balance. Here that is not the case and in fact may be bad for business - I understand and respect that. But gentlemen, this thread stands as a monument of how NOT to behave towards someone who is looking to your knowledge/skill/experience to improve themself, veteran or not. It is beneath you. If his comments/questions came across poorly - clarify before condemning him, lest we look like fools! I too am a new knifemaker and am happy to have such a great resource as this forum at my disposal. It would not be great but for those who freely contribute their time and experience for the good of others. Very noble and generous! Please don't lessen that, because the truth is, as a combat veteran, wounded in the line of duty, what we actually OWE johnferrante may well be beyond what we wish or are able to pay, not the least of which would be some manners and common courtesy...we always owe that to each other. johnferrante I hope you stay here, as we are better with you that without, and I thank you for your service and sacrifice. God bless you.

John-

First of all, THANK YOU for your service. It IS APPRECIATED.

Maybe I read too much into your post, so for that I apologize. And fwiw- I wasn't trying to beat you down with my reply.

So I'll explain why I took your post the way I did.

You have been registered since 2012 but had never made a post (good, bad, or indifferent).

I'd like to point out--- It takes the same amount of effort for a person to say, "Thank you" as it does to say "F*** you." Yet nowadays, it seems most folks are hard pressed to say "thank you"... (let alone "PLEASE!" ;) ) yet F-you rolls right off the tongue of many of those same guys.

As a general rule, many in our society are VERY quick to complain, yet slow to praise.

Reading your original post, it read (to me) as a guy that's been learning and taking info from others for 2 years without ever saying thank you... but had the time to complain because he didn't like an answer a knife maker gave him.

And that's where my reply came from. I readily admit that my thoughts have been tainted a bit by some of these young youtube warriors that have a horrible attitude. But as a man that has been where, and done what, you have in your life, then it was a misunderstanding on my part. Sorry about that.

I'd like to encourage you to stick around, as there is a lot to learn around here, and there are a lot of great guys here. :)

John, I have mixed feelings about your reply. Reading your original post, you came across as an entitled kid. If you mentioned you had a physical disability, it might have changed the responses a bit. On the other hand, that does not obligate anyone to provide their information either. I too have provided service to people, not through the military, but have worked with people who have committed horrible crimes, and were the victims of horrible crimes. This does not change what information people will or ought to share with me. I have physical challenges with an inflammatory condition that affects how I work. Many of us here do. It doesn't change how we share information.

You did not provide the relevant information, and it affected how people responded. I hope you are as open to your own advice as you suggested others should. Your response sounds like an attempt to make others feel bad for calling you out on a poorly worded initial post. You didn't express your needs, rather, you expressed displeasure with the maker. Hopefully you will stick around, realizing how these situations could be avoided, as this site is extremely helpful.

You know, if you would have put a fraction of that in your profile, we would have had a better sense of who you are and most of this would have been avoided.

School's out this week and we have seen an influx of the new tell me everything I need to know users.

As I mentioned before, with a little searching you would find a hollow grind calculator at Jantz and the other knifesupply companies.

With much regret... I can't really blame you for saying that. I'm pretty stern about this kinda thing, but geez... this thread seems to have taken a wrong turn down just-plain-mean-road.

Frankly, I'm finding myself a little disappointed in some of the same folks who've taught me so much, and that's taken me off-guard. Seems to be a bit of dogpiling going on here for no damn reason, and as Jimi said... "that ain't too cool".

Snarky comments about "taking someone to the woodshed" aside ( an approach with which I wholeheartedly and adamantly disagree in this situation) -we are grown men FFS, no one here needs a spanking -
... I ask you to read through the whole thread again, with an open mind.

We're here to teach and share, not to discourage and shame newcomers. I might also add that no one "owes" any of us anything for sharing our knowledge freely, either. No one twisted our arms.

In any case, give us another chance. Perhaps tomorrow we'll be a bit more welcoming.

OK, guys......lets all just move on. It seems to be piling on after the tackle now.

John, don't take this thread as the normal response here. Sometimes, especial at the beginning of summer break and at the Christmas holiday, we tend to get out radar set to HIGH Filter. We will get a flood of, "How can I make a knife." and, "What do I need to buy/do/get..." questions.

For an answer to a question like yours, I would have suggested posting a thread with photos or diagrams of your grinder and a question about how to mount the work rest. You would have received many responses with offers of suggestions and photos of other setups. Actually, these threads are readily available for you to read, since they are frequent. using the BF search engine, https://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=011197018607028182644:qfobr3dlcra , will allow you to find such advice.

The thread you started here was more suited for a place like "Whine and Cheese" or "The Good, Bad, and Ugly". I am going to close it now to keep any more comments from being posted.
