Glass platen problem.

I installed a glass platen liner and now have a problem with it. After only a day or two I have numerous grooves in it. Vertical grooves like I was getting on my metal platen.
It started off really nice with smooth grinds, but got ate up really quick. Now not so smooth on that part.

Is this normal? I can grind around it, but it is not giving me the warm fuzzies.

I have to imagine it was some other sort of glass. I've been on the same piece neoceram for about 4 months now, and that's full time knifemaking.
Silicon carbide is about the only thing that will touch that stuff.

To add jump in with the others, I wonder what type of glass you used. If it was picked up locally it could be a case where the glass shop mixed up glass types. My neoceram platen has been on for over a year of fairly steady evening and weekend use and is still nearly perfect. Some mild scratches but certainly no grooves or anything that would transfer though a belt when grinding anyway.

I'm guessing (along with others), that you didn't use a ceramic glass platen? Regular glass won't last very long at all, and in fact, can be dangerous to use, as it may fracture from getting too hot.

Search ebay for pyroceram aka robax, and you'll find what you need for about as reasonable price as you can get it.

Used an eBay person called vwjackstraw. Supposed to be the right kind, that’s what it was listed as.

Hmmm.... that's odd. He does in fact use the pyroceramic glass for his liners, but any pyroceram liner I've used usually last for months before it starts to show any real wear.

Are you sure it’s not gunk from the back of the belt?
I would get that occasionally and have to use a razor blade to scrape it off.

Used a razor blade to get the hunk off and some acetone to clean it, still there.
Will try and get a pic up, but it’s just vertical grooves.
Probably gonna chalk it up to a bad one and try to put another one on.
Used red rtv so hopefully it will come off with a torch or heat gun.

That looks like gunk to me. I have to sand my platen down every once in awhile because of that crap.

That looks like the stuff that gunks up from the belt. You weren’t able to scrape it? Are you able to check it with a dial indicator or micrometer to see if it’s a depression or deposit in the surface?

That is after scraping with razor and cleaning with acetone and toothbrush. They are little grooves that looks like I ran the belt upside down. I can be a little slow sometime, but I have never done that. Some are pretty deep too.

Just strange. Hoping it is just a bad piece, got a couple more that I guess I can put on there.

Another good practice is to turn your belt by hand and clean the inside with a cloth or paper towel to remove any embedded particles of grit that can be pressed onto the back during storage or shipping. Even during a grinding session its possible to pick up debris while the belt is running.
