Glass platen problem.

I just installed the glass platen from the same seller. I am hoping for good results. I rough ground one blade so far and it looks fine to me. But I will see what time tells.

Looks as though I am having the exact same problem. Haven't even finished one knife yet. Already vertical dips in the platen. Sigh... Time to contact the seller.

I will have to check mine when I get home. I went cheep and got my glass from a fireplace store. Thy let me pull the glass from there junk stoves. I'm thinking I Installed the glass last year about this time. It has been great for me so far. I think mine has some scratches like that but I'm not sure.

Thanks man.

I am going to continue using it to see how the blade finish turns out at 220 or higher. I am hoping the dips won't affect it.

The vertical scratches won't cause as much a problem as wear hollows going across often created by lots of contour grinding. I expect the stuff sold to you was not of the quality most of us have been getting. Sorry you're going through this.

I agree. There isn't gouges or concave dips forming as of yet. I contacted the seller. I will see what he says. Hopefully get my money back and then purchase from USAknifemaker.

check the belts you used. It happened me only once in many years, but a ceramic belt had some abrasive grains glued to the inside of the belt.

Do you have a local glass shop?
Should be much cheaper, and you know you'll get the right stuff. I'm using "neoceram" fireplace glass, and even making knives full time the 4 month old piece of glass on my platten isn't showing any wear.

The seller (VWJackStraw) replied to me right away. This is what he said:

When you are grinding the ceramic grit gets between the back of the belt and the ceramic glass and creates the lines/scratches you are seeing. This is normal, and overall the glass stays flatter much longer and runs much cooler than a steel platen. If you are unhappy with the performance of the glass please send it back and I can get you refunded. With the exception of maybe a solid carbide platen all platen material is going to show signs of wear with use.

I will continue to use the platen to see how it turns out. I had cleaned the backside of the belt by hand before putting it on the grinder. Maybe it wasn't clean enough.

I installed a carbide platen a couple of weeks ago and BAM, problem solved. I'm thinking it'll last decades if not forever.

Another forum member made a special order and I got lucky enough to get one too. Cost was $200. It came with perfect 1/8" radii on the edges which makes plunges a breeze. I know $200 is kinda spendy but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Pics aren't really necessary as it looks like any other platen liner except its grayish black like most carbide.

Damn I would be in at that price for sure. Nothing is worse than a headache shit tools causes. Could you share the members name so I could contact and get the details?

Yes! Please do share the info of the Member that can make these carbide Platens? I've used the Pryocem for years but it sould be so nice not to have (*&^% with it anymore!

It’s good to see that mine isn’t the only one like this. I am just gonna run it for a while longer and see if it gets worse.

Carbide platen? That would be really nice.
My grinder came with an A2 steel platen, but I guess it hasn’t been heat treated. Maybe I should get another and have it heat treated professionally?
Or make one out of something like 1084.

I wore out 2 or 3 glass platens, then got a steel one from Nathan. Either A2 or D2 don't remember, but it's still fine after a few hundred blades. I can also surface grind it in needed.

I'll leave it up to him to chime in if he wants to.
