Your details are incredible....absolutely World Class.....amazing fit and finish. :)

I just have to ask, how do you do that sweeping grind, where the plunge is so perfect and rounded/feathered at the bottom? Is it with a rubber wheel, any special technique? Because I've been wanting to do that but haven't the foggiest on how to even start. It's absolutely gorgeous, I'm just curious if you'd be willing to share technique!!

This knife and WIP are EPIC...!!!

It's incredible watching this come together, as everything is near flawless, and it's still not even finished. The handle is the really impressive part obviously, as there is so much involved in making it. Not only do you have to get all the mechanics to function properly and smoothly, but getting them to the the level fit and finish you've put on them, and still have yet to put on them is insane. Don't get me wrong, I love the blade too, it has a nice profile and the grinds on it are beautiful (nice flow), but it's funny how it almost seems completely secondary to the "knife" itself, which I'm pretty sure is impossible lol.

Anyway, thanks for taking us along on this and sharing it in such detail, can't wait to see more!

BTW, how many belts did you go through shaping that mammoth molar? ;)

Hi Sir ya of course.

I have built most of my equipment myself, my grinder, fixtures, handtools, Ht oven so on. Only investment I had to make was my mill(the mill is used for inside mechanics stuff on knives)

to the grinder, i use a 10" wheel(want bigger) and yes a rubber wheel. i have slightly camfered the edge(just tiny camfer) But the grinding process is a patience job. Short story: Before i wet stone my entire bevels and sat for 18-20 hours on a blade, thats why I have still have a slow grinder only 0,3Hp(will upgrade some) Now i spend 4 hours about on a couple bevels, the plunge is done almost from start, you just have to try and sweep it in and make sure the lines are crisp, a good helper is to draw consistent lines on top of dykem so you dont pass critical areas. Most people that try this plunges get a straight down sideways angle, that happens if you try to do the plunge in the end, my plunge grind is with the bevel making from the start. I might do a full vudeo on YT on this cause its difficult to exlain in text.

thanks

/Glenn

Thanks and I am humble of the words, I am a 31 year old maker with 2 years experience, but I have always used my hands on mechanics and steel working so I have a understanding that things must be flat nd paralell from the start. I dont have surface grinder so all prepping is done by hand. i only have a mill for tolerances on mechanics part, or else I do manual labor(old school knifemaking)

Important that this craft can live one more generation and hopefully inspire new guys to do the same in 40 years, I will always do this cause I can use my Passion, Patience and Determination to the edge of what possible.

for the Mammoth its a pain, I went thru 2 carbide endmills to get down the thickness under prepping, for belts its was okay. I have totally 20-25 belts and havent thrown away one in a year cause I work slow and take car of my belts also. Time isnt a presence for me so I can fully use equipment properly. But Cubitron belts in the start of contouring and Ceramic belts is a must.

On the Mammoth I wish I had surface grinder cause it eats up carbide endmills(cant use them for other tasks later)

thanks

Alright update.

Finished up filework on liners, as said I ount the liners on spine inside out so I have most possibility to keep it mostly consistent.

Time to etch all the parts, I wish it was carbon damascus because I can also do hot bluing now. This steel has a story: A guy named Mathias is the owner of this knife, he is a blacksmith at Damasteel Sweden(main office/factory) and this steel isnt a catalog steel, this is one off just for this knife build. So the man that made the steel is the future owner. Quite fun :)

Have not pictures fro mthe etch itself, but I use 37% muritaec and pure each time for a etch, can be heated later for re-use. Here I have soaked them in Windex after neutralizing the etchant

We are closing in on final assembly, making a damascus thumb stud left, I dont have lathe so I do that on my mill with roundtable and my own motor setup

Time for assembly and some pictures of the knife. Only thing missing is to make a thumbstud, I always save that for last task

I use the cordless drill on the buffer

Making progress on assembly, I polished up all the screws and leave them natural without color to blend in more with liners inside the knife.

And here it is. Thank you everyone for showing interest into my WIP thread. I will pulblish a couple photo with the stud mounted on the blade later.

I have also made a video on YT, just search hovinknives.
