The Combat Weapons Team here at USMA gives its members freedom to carry any sidearms they want (if it isn't 9mm or .45 they ahve to buy thier own ammo). Last year Glocks held a lishgt edge in numbers on the team, but this year only four of thirty-two use 1911s in competition. These people are very well-trained, shooting at least three hundred rounds a week. Their primary instructor is MSG Gordon, a professional soldier who has been in a Ranger Bat since he enlisted. They also train with SEALs, FBI HRT and NYPD SWAT. Almost everyone carries Glocks, whether 9mm, .357,.40 or .45.
Here it goes: as has been pointed out, 1911s are very safe and effective if properly trained. In the time it takes tog et this training, a Glock-weilding shooter has already gotten to advanced shooting techniques. The 1911 is not obsolete, but is better suited to offensive shooting (with the weapon drawn and ready to go, a la HRT or SWAT).
I've listened to a lot of people express opinions one way or another, but I'm buying a Glock 19 when I turn 21. Why? Lighter, more reliable and having a capacity double that of a similar sized 1911 series, there really is no choice. And while cocked and locked is perfectly safe, I feel safer with a double action, especially one as smooth and short as a Glock's.
