I was always into the go out on the trails vehicles. Had trucks for the past 17 years with my last being a '02 ranger with the off road package. Well with the new baby there just wasn't enough room say I was gonna bite the bullet and go for the urban assault vehicle... Jeep Compass(sigh). Went to the dealership...looked around at some Compi. Not happy. Then I seen it. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Said to myself... can't afford it. Then I seen the sticker. $25,xxx. This couldn't be true. I've seen them listed for no less then $28,xxx. Took it for a test drive. The wife fell in love. So we bought it. Had to give up my baby(truck) but they gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. So now I can still hit the trails and not look like a pansy. So what kinda bug out vehicles do you guys drive?

84 Bronco XLT
Gas mileage is crappy so I probably wouldn't be able to "bug out" too far!!!!! :(

92 Toyota 22R pickup 4X4, 4 inch lift with 33' BFG All terrains. Front and rear detroit lockers and a winch. I'm no expert, but go offroading habitually with buddies with rubicons and so far I've had 3 buddies need to get recovered with me none. Good performance from a truck with 285K miles. Oh and total build cost was under 7K$. Good times.

I was in the same boat, I got a 2000 Subaru Forester. The downside is the clearance 10-11", but for a vehicle of its type, thats great considering how amazing the AWD is. I've had it in some pretty terrible conditions after some rivers flooded, and it did great! I did however loose some plastic in the front on the bottom. If I planned on doing it more, I'd get a good sump guard. I get 29 mpg on the highway. So, it works when I need it to, but I only "need it" a few times a month.

This is mine at the moment

its handled 4x4 tracks , rivers , mud and snow and ice so far no worries .

front tyres are light truck tyres , rear tyres are hancook mud tyres

give a car the right amount of grip and it will get you most places .

I wished it looked like this now, maybe if I wasn't too lazy to keep it clean, or I would just drive it on pavement. :D

You guys got me beat. I got only a 2x2 i put a shoe on each a pack in the back and i go anywhere. Even climb up a tree. Oh yea if i need to get realy far i got a VW camper. Been to some fire roads where the bumpers would scarp and some places the only way up the hill was turn around put in reverse and gun it. To be honest i would rather walk. If i could get my hands on one of the older Suzuki samorai that would be the one for me. Its alot like the old jeeps small light weight and goes anywhere a sane person might want to go..

Sounds like my dream truck. I wanted to get one of those older Toyotas earlier this summer, but didn't have the money. Had to settle for a very beat up Cavalier instead. I'll definitely be getting a truck sometime within the next year though.

Its a girl from a kids leggo set

its there for a few reasons , I work with kids who had a rough time , it puts them more at ease somehow when we have to go places , its one thing to have to go with the big bloke , but the big bloke with the leggo lady on his car , he is cool ...
its a trademark for my pics , to kinda prove yeah , this lil ol 2x4 toyota DID get to that location , and it really is my pictures .
and I just like seeing people do double takes when they see it , the number of people who stare and point is incredible

the car before had a yellow rubber duckie with a LED light inside so it lit up when the head lights were on .... God only knows what will be on the next one ...

I drive a '95 Wrangler with a 2" lift. It's adequate for my needs, meaning its off-road capabilities handily exceed my off-road driving abilities. I don't have time to master any more skills right now.

Good response... didn't expect so much so fast. After rereading my original post I realized I might have offended someone here that might be a Compass owner. For that I appologize. Just me being a slightly larger fellow and the small size of the Compi... it's like the saying...10 lbs of s*** in a 1 lb bag.

The Toyota Landcruiser 70 series has had legend status here in Australia for 30 years.

people feel same about the landcruiser everywhere you go. Its one tough truck Great frame that dont flex much.

Driving technique will out perform a big dollar 4X4 on most occasions. Like they say , "a 4 wheel drive just allows you to get stuck where you can't with a 2 wheel drive."

I have a 4x2 2004 Xterra, and it has been able to handle all the trails I have thrown at it so far. I stay away from sand and mud pits, so I should be fine for now. :)

It did piss me off when they released the 2005 model with 80 more HP and better gas mileage. Oh well, something to look forward to in the future...

I drive a "bug back" vehicle. I don't want to leave, so I pack as much as I need to get back to the island. My Tacoma 2x4 is perfect. I'll hoof it if I have to, then hi jack a boat, and get back to the island where you can live for years right off the land.
