Going from folders to fixed; locking to slipjoints

I find it hard to believe got couldn't get through the day with these two easy carry options ... Today's carry

Change is invetable. In my teens a buck stockman served me well, as i aged (note im in my mid 50,s) i begain carrying what in the early 2,000,s were modern folders. Mostly spydies and a large fillet knife (I worked in the fishing industry then. Years passed and now I work as a prep, sandwich chef. A single blade wharnie case knife and a 10" chef knife work just fine for all my daily chores. I say agian, Change is invetable! We all find what works for us. GREAT THREAD COMEUPPANCE!...AND what is that wharnie fixed blade in your 1st post?..i love me some wharny!

I've carried a slip joint almost every day for the past 35 years. Occasionally, I will carry a smallish lock back or a liner lock and I find that these types of knives handle 95% of what I need a knife for - even when outdoors - camping and hunting. While I have a respectable collection of knives that include many types: fixed blades, slip joints, liner locks and modern 'tactical' folders, I carry slip joints most often. I have been thinking for some time now that should the need arise for defense, a slip joint would be a poor choice - a small blade that is slow to open wouldn't be ideal and a fixed blade would be too conspicuous for me. As such, I recently decided it would be wise to carry a tactical folder, such as a ZT 0560 or a CRK Sebenza. Realizing there is a somewhat massive trade off (for me at least) between comfort and being adequately prepared for defense, it's a trade-off I'm willing to make at this point as I do not currently have a CCL & I'm not sure that if I did, I would carry every day, especially since guns are not allowed where I am most of the day.

I feel the same way op. I have been carrying a small fixed blade and a SAK for the last few years. I sold most of my folders. I will still buy one every now and then but, really just to play with and enjoy the engineering. Modern locking folders are really just man jewelry imo. Real men carry fixed blades:D. You just cant beat the simplicity, reliability, and ease of use that a fixed blade offers imo. A good sheath is a must however.

If your masculinity is fragile enough that you need to malign those that don't carry the same kind of knife you do then you need more than a fixed blade.

But I digress. I have a Rick Lowe leather wrapped kydex sheath on the way for my Fiddleback Production Hiking Buddy and I figure I'll give fixed EDC a shot, just to see how I like it.

"Real men" carry whatever they feel like carrying. Support your preference without the nonsense.

That was not my intent. People can do as they please and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I should have put a smiley face as I was more joking.

My apologies as well. It can be tricky to interpret text......

I often carry a small fixed blade in my pocket like an Izula, and pair that with a Vic of some sort.

We have some strict knife laws in the UK which basically means a locking blade is considered in the same way as a fixed blade. So I may as well carry a fixed blade when I have good reason to carry a knife.
This little S!K GSO is just as easy to carry as any heavy duty folder:

For pure build strength then fixed wins. I still like a small folder and I have my slipjoints too. Fixed doesn't mean big:

From Leatherman's to any locking knife from say a Large Sebbie, are best belt carried because of the weight. Really ought to be very light weight to carry in a pocket even when with a clip, and to get to that weight there isn't a lot of knife for hard tough work. If it can't do hard tough work then a slipjoint is fine.

I too carry a penknife, slipjoint, everyday. Have done done for 40 odd years. Anything bigger is a decision to compliment the penknife.

I do believe in shades of Grey. For most public edc moments I'm a slippie or traditional lockback kinda guy. Small thin slicer blade does the trick. At home I often mix in easy one hand opening moderns for chores around the house.

Im ok now with realizing that my daily reality doesn't involve the latest or greatest modern folder. Slippies all the way for daily edc.

I still appreciate the hell out of moderns and I don't think that ever going to stop.

I still need me a real dozier hunter lockback in d2, a mnandi and I'm sure a bunch of moderns that I didn't even know I want lol.

I really love my traditionals though this is after shunning them and thinking them to be too old school for my taste. But theyre like Spydercos, they slice great and they feel awesome in hand.

While I occasionally find myself lusting over certain small fixed blades, I never pull the trigger, because they just don't fit my lifestyle and style of dress. I work in an office, in dress pants/button-downs, etc., so I won't be strapping on a sheath, or wearing a neck-knife under my shirt. A slip-joint would do everything I ever need a knife for, but I just don't enjoy them as much as modern folders. I freely admit that my carry knife is just as much "man-jewelry" as it is a tool, but I enjoy it. My preference is for a small (preferably under 3 inch) folder, often in titanium (small Sebenza is basically perfect for me) . On the weekends, I might carry a ZT 0801.

I always have at least one slipjoint on me, classic on keys, and another small one in watch pocket.
Normally that is a Case Peanut or Mini Doc but I just got a GEC Coyote and that has proven to be an excellent tool also.

As long as I'm mindful of the task I find a slippie is just fine.
I used to carry my Izula and BK24 more but I just gravitated back to folders again.
A fixed blade is indispensable at times but I don't ever put anything on my belt so it is more difficult to carry most models.

Definitely YMMV territory.

I like the idea of fixed blades. I like using them. I never ever carry one. But then, I hate anything of any kind on my belt.

Around town, a fixed blade just offers no value to me. Way, way, way too much social friction. And I'm not going to even think of carrying a fixed blade with a blade longer than 4" around town and in that size range, just much easier for me to carry a large folder in my back pocket. Way, way, way less social friction. Way, way, way more comfortable. Just a win on every count.

In the woods, I only carry a 4"-5" fixed blade on the rare trip that I'm going to be making fires regularly and that is rare. More often than not, I just carry an EDC type folder and that's more than enough for everything I do.

As far as locking vs slip joint... I don't much matter to me. I carry traditionals *almost* exclusively. I pick knives based on other factors than locks.

This thread needs some pictures. Slip joint goodness in the rear pocket.

I'll tell ya what though CM, you look like you'd be a handful in a fist fight. I enjoy a good fist fight, seriously, but you would make it less fun. :)

Love that shirt.

I made a quick video that is awful and ends abruptly. I went on to talk about each individual knife, and it was a solid 5 minutes of blurry / uninteresting footage with a voiceover that says "actually" about fifteen times.

So this is the first 37 seconds, which pretty much gets the point across.
