Going on a cruise-what would you take?

More specifically, which traditional knife? (of course)

So I'm leaving for four days to the Bahamas and the cruise line allows any knife under four inches, I'm assuming blade length.

I'm torn between a Peanut, #15 Huckleberry boys knife (for the caplifter), or a Vic Farmer.

I suppose my primary concern is that if there are bottles on board I can open them, assuming the servers and bartenders don't steal all the fun by removing the cap themselves.

Second, I've never been at sea so unsure how my carbon steel knives would fare with the ocean air.

I like the idea of the peanut the most, its minimal and unassuming. Traveling in general though makes me lean towards an SAK.

Any of you gentlemen take cruises, and if so what knife did you take/would you bring?

- you're lucky..! Seabourn found my folder in a flash when the case was loaded through the conveyor - a 3" Michael Morris friction folder - well, I guess it gave the silly lill man a feeling of power

Now, I strap it to the u/s of my electric shaver or similar.

There was nothing I needed a knife for on board........hot n cold running waiters and waitresses everywhere with a willing smile........but it was useful couple of times when we got off each day to visit the day's destination

Would suggest a SAK is the best - everyone knows a SAK and they usually don't get NKP in a flap...

I've never been on a cruise, but if I were going on a walkabout. . .

I like to take a SAK as my vacation knife. Its plethora of tools can come in handy.

I like to carry stainless when I'm around saltwater also.

Best of all, they are inexpensive, so I don't fret losing it to security.

Where are you cruising?

I vote SAK. It’s unassuming, and you’ll never know what other tools you’ll end up needing, so a SAK is the perfect travel knife in my opinion.

Not on a cruise, but I had no problems accomplishing what needed to be done with a SAK Waiter or Peanut when I was on the Atlantic Shores on Nova Scotia for a week.

Bahamas, specifically Freeport and Nassau.

SAK does make the most sense, also I'd hate to lose either of the knives I've mentioned. I think I may just pick up a Cadet or Recruit for the trip, something that won't weigh my pockets down but still have some basic tools.

I think that’s a great option.

If it were me, I’d take a SAK partially for the tweezers and toothpick. :)

Any SAK with scissors, tweezer, and tooth pick would be more than enough. I'd include corkscrew, but I think most lines do not allow alcohol in the cabins, you probably will not have the opportunity to even pop your own caps on bottles...

Don't worry about rust on carbon steel while at sea. I was in the Navy for 24-years (over half that actually at sea) and never had problems with rust. This'll sound crazy but you can wipe that area of your face between your nose and cheek with your thumb and use that oil to wipe on your blade, bolsters, etc. to help prevent rust.

You're going on a cruise and in your expenses for that cruise, you are paying people to open your cans and bottles. Let them do it.

A "Classic" SAK would probably do you just fine.

You might want to research what you are allowed to carry if you are strolling around the islands. Some countries have very restrictive rules.
Not worth the hassle, or just leave it on the ship if you go ashore.

Agreed a SAK is about best as it is seen as a tool by most.

OK, here is your answer. A SAK Midnight Manager. I have been on over 30 cruises so I am an expert. The SAK has several things you will need.

Cap lifter; if you buy a bucket of beer (a bit cheaper that way), they will open one for you. You may have to wait for one of them to circle around for the next beer. Also, if you don't drink all 5, you can take them back to the cabin.

LED: two reasons. First is most ships I have been on do not have clocks so you will need to see your watch in the dark especially if you have an inside room; completely dark with lights out. Second is to help find your way to the can in the middle of the night to get rid of all the beer. Again, very dark.

Pen: may or may not use but nice to have. Sometimes it does come in handy.

Blade: usually use it at some point.

Scissors: I use them to trim my hair. Probably can find other uses too.

All this and it is tiny!!!!!
Have a great cruise

ps: all above is true.
