Going on a cruise-what would you take?

You might want to research what you are allowed to carry if you are strolling around the islands. Some countries have very restrictive rules.
Not worth the hassle, or just leave it on the ship if you go ashore.

Agreed a SAK is about best as it is seen as a tool by most.

This is a good point. I cruised these ports with carnival and I seem to remember the boat having a metal detector on the way back on.

Went of a Caribbean cruise a few years back (well known cruise co). Packed a cheap, 2 inch lockback in my checked baggage as we were flying to port. No problems there. Got my knife out of suitcase a carried it all over with no problems. Repacked it for the flight home. Got home NO KNIFE. Stolen by one of the cruise ship luggage people. Remember they have keys to every know type of luggage. Just be forewarned.
Enjoy your cruise.

SAK for the stainless steel. You probably won't but theres a chance you'd get some pitting on the carbon steel if you're out on the deck a lot. You're never going to need the cap lifter.

Good tips here, thanks guys.
I'm liking the Vic rambler/manager/classic idea. The truth is I probably won't need much on board, but I've had a knife in my pocket for as long as I can remember and I'd feel naked without one so far from home.

Type of knife I've taken on ships is one aimed at food. Preparing a snack in the cabin, fruits etc or even in restaurants on board (such crap tableware usually...) CASE Slimline Trapper in stainless and Yellow D, light in the pocket, old school looking so the fish won't get scared (whales too...:D) and inexpensive.

Bon voyage:cool:

I’ve been on a few cruises, and I guess I wasn’t aware that knives were allowed at all. That’s not to say that I specifically remember them being forbidden, but I don’t think I ever brought one with me (at the time, I mostly carried modern folders, and I probably just left them at home). Security when you get on the ship is reminiscent of airport security (metal detectors and such), so maybe I just assumed they weren’t allowed. They are pretty strict about bringing some items on board. Alcohol, for example. I can’t recall on any cruise ever needing a bottle opener. (To be honest, because you can’t bring your own alcohol, and because drinks are pretty pricey on board, we did most of our drinking when we got off the boat. :D)

All that said, if you can bring a small knife with you, I would go with the others who had suggested an SAK.

I would definitely take some sort of "sunday carry" type of knife, unless you are the "in case of shipwreck" kinda guy. And you are on the cruise, let the staff open the beers. :D

Definitely your preferred SAK, as many others have echoed. I might also be inclined to bring a small Opinel or small Mora. Something that would be nice to have around should the “need” arise, but nothing I’d ever give second thought to “losing” or having it “taken” by the various security stops along the way.

A cruise? Like on a big boat on the ocean?
You’re going to need a rope knife!
Ideally, it would also have a marlin spike for spiking marlins or undoing knots or poking holes in the bottom of beer cans for fun drinking games. I’d also consider one of the “ coastguard approved” rope knives that include a can opener, because all of the lifeboats have canned fresh water and food on board.

Great suggestion. I've always liked those knives with the marlin spike but could never justify the purchase. I should get one in white bone and scrimshaw the covers on the trip :D

I would take it as a given that I would be going overboard one way or another and end up washed up on a desert Island where I would remain for a very long time. Therefore Farmer for survival purposes.

The heck with Gilligan. If amo cruise, amo be like the old boy from up on the Range who got shipwrecked with celebrity supermodel Elle McPherson. SAK Farmer, to show off my Robinson Crusoe.
