Going to army

If you mean you are heading to basic...DO, NOT, BRING, A, KNIFE!
I imagine it's the same on the other side of the pond from North America too, but I couldn't say for certain what their rules are for possessing knives in basic training. They don't want you stabbing each other under the extreme stress I guess.

When I was 18 anyone who brought one handed them in, they were tagged, and then returned at the end of the course. Year's later someone is telling me about the crazy amnesty pile of contraband growing right in front of him like a new volcanic island rising from the Pacific, when the instructor left the room after giving everyone the chance to quickly divest themselves of assorted contraband before their stuff is searched. Times change...

From my experience, a Victorinox, 91 mm with scissors or a LM squirt, with scissors should be enough.

It will be good to have a nice sharp blade, scissors are always useful and you may need small pliers for the odd job.

You will be given a multitool type knife but it may be cheap rubbish and if you lose it you may get in trouble.

This is the army Mr. Jones
No private rooms or telephones
You've had breakfast in bed before
And you won't have it there anymore

Might wanna ditch the attitude before you go… But then again, it’ll be funnier if you don’t.
OK, so making a joke on a forum is somehow comparable to real life?

Getting same shit written to you again in caps lock after you already replied kinda guaranteed it.

I would still recommend a Rambler on your keychain or a swisscard lite in your wallet. Scissors, tweezers, toothpick, pen etc will all come handy.

I have those as individual items though.

Would be bad if I brought it and then had to leave it in box before entry just because of the blade there. So I'll just go without one.

How the hell are you in the army with your sight so bad?

I appreciate the advice and will take your advice.

As I already answered your previous post saying the exact same thing. No need to repeat. Cheers bro.
Hey you’re off to a great start talking to veterans like that. I’m sure you’ll do well when the drill sergeant starts screaming in your face.

If you take a knife to basic, it will be confiscated and destroyed. Don't bring anything but yourself and your paperwork.

Still interested in what country this is. No idea what their rules are, but I highly recommend bringing your own knife. Like, a smatchet, preferably. Also bring your attitude and your own gun, drill sergeants like recruits with initiative.

At least pronouns haven't been mentioned.

Knife content: I hope OP takes veterans advice on knives.

Vets, thank you for your service. (Especially US vets, but good guy/gal vets everywhere.)

Never served l, but thank you to all that did honorably.

However, I have had a couple of Soviet era AK bayonets (since that is what the OP mentioned), and they are basically useless for anything short of poking nasty holes. Yeah they CAN be made to cut. You can bend/break wire, but they are some of the most useless "knives".

If it were me, whenever prudent within your training and deployment, I'd just snag a pliers based MT and be done with it. No frills, no bits to lose, etc. The mentioned Rebar would be a good one, but I'd be happy with a cheap Gerber TBH.

OP is from Croatia, per his post history. Also, per that same post history, he is aware of what he can and can not bring with him, based on references to conversations he had with friends in his home country who had served about that same topic (in April, 2022).

I am guessing the requirements of Croatian and US Army service could be different.

All I'll carry is Spear Point CRKT Minimalist.

Why?
1. It's cheap. So I don't care if it gets lost or stolen. I paid only 30 for it.
2. I just need small utility knife.
3. If I'll need anything bigger - that'll be issued to me.

Thinking about SAK tho, but that is almost asking to get stolen.

Your opinions?

My opinion is that you seem to be grounded in what is realistic and practical. As your career progresses, you will have a better understanding of what you need to supplement the tools issued to you for the duties you are assigned. If you are in a rear Eschelon technical or support function, you might make different decisions than if you are in a unit likely to be the point of the spear.

When our son was "surged" into Iraq in 2004-"05, he was a platoon leader in a Marine reconnaissance unit (3rd LAR Bn). I have written here that I bought and gave him a plethora of rugged cutlery. Some were real gut-ripping throat cutters or deep stabbing daggers. What he chose to take were exclusively utility type blades ranging from a 7" fixed blade belt knife to several pouch or pocketknives. One was a Leatherman Wave. Today, I would have included one of the multitools focused on maintenance of an /AR based rifle. Note that others here on this forum may recommend against that.

My opinion: You are doing good. Give it time and you will be able to make more informed choices.

Best wishes.
