Going to army

OP is from Croatia, per his post history. Also, per that same post history, he is aware of what he can and can not bring with him, based on references to conversations he had with friends in his home country who had served about that same topic (in April, 2022).

I am guessing the requirements of Croatian and US Army service could be different.
Good for him! Not sure if the Croatian military is volunteer or conscription. We had Croatians train with us, they were some good folks. First and only time in my life I've been drunk.

I would not take a knife, as you will need to see what your gonna be doing in your unit.

I think I would be more inclined to make more room for ammo and water, and see if a multi-tool will be useful when you identify the work you'll be doing.

The bayonet assigned will be fine for opening MREs or cutting straps or rope.

If you mean you are heading to basic...DO, NOT, BRING, A, KNIFE!

This is worth reading several times. For those of us who have served, we can tell you that bringing a blade to basic is a poor tactical decision on your part.

When you get to AIT, you will have the opportunity to hit the PX, and buy whatever you want.

Its also worth pointing out, that the base you are assigned to may have rules and regulations about what size knife you can or can't carry, and the manner in which it can be carried.

My opinion is that you seem to be grounded in what is realistic and practical. As your career progresses, you will have a better understanding of what you need to supplement the tools issued to you for the duties you are assigned. If you are in a rear Eschelon technical or support function, you might make different decisions than if you are in a unit likely to be the point of the spear.

When our son was "surged" into Iraq in 2004-"05, he was a platoon leader in a Marine reconnaissance unit (3rd LAR Bn). I have written here that I bought and gave him a plethora of rugged cutlery. Some were real gut-ripping throat cutters or deep stabbing daggers. What he chose to take were exclusively utility type blades ranging from a 7" fixed blade belt knife to several pouch or pocketknives. One was a Leatherman Wave. Today, I would have included one of the multitools focused on maintenance of an /AR based rifle. Note that others here on this forum may recommend against that.

My opinion: You are doing good. Give it time and you will be able to make more informed choices.

Best wishes.
Pretty much the same story here. My son's still in, he's stationed in Okinawa. I've given him nothing but the best equipment that money could buy. I'm not going to let him trust his life on junk equipment.

Hey you’re off to a great start talking to veterans like that. I’m sure you’ll do well when the drill sergeant starts screaming in your face.
My guy. I don't know who you are or who he is. And I'm not required to know that either. My reply was more of a joke what should be obvious in that very post you quoted. Yet you got your panties in a bunch for some reason...

I deal with idiots daily with smile on my face because I work in retail. I also worked in call center. I'm used to all kinds of people screaming into my face in real life or over the phone, and I'll politely respond.
Except that shit I was going to university that I was paying myself with these shitty jobs and that I'm about to finish this autumn. So I did all that crap while tired and sleep deprived.

So that being put aside, sometimes is best not to comment anything if you don't read what's being typed or know shit about person you're replying to.

Thank you for advice.

Based on response up there and what I heard from guys that served before me - I decided not to take anything.

Also, we use AK-47 here, and few people said they got bayonets. So I guess that will be only thing I'll need.

You just asked a man with several decades of military experience if he was blind because he gave you a blunt response. I’m just letting you know that if that is the sort of reaction you have to authority figures giving you a talking to, you’re going to have a bad time. I’d say be more like a sponge, instead of trying to get in the last word. Just my two cents.

Don't worry about it King it won't take him but about 3 days to realize that he's in the army now. And no it's not going to be fun. And if he got an attitude life is going to be hell for him.

Yeah, I'm Croatian. So far what I heard is that they had to drop only large fixed blades they brought. Like story of guy who had machete and they told him "You won't need that, Rambo" and he had to give it away.

But I was told that I won't need anything as MRE's can be opened without knife and some have told me they were issued a bayonet. I'm just not gonna risk it. I won't bring anything, if nothing else - I'l ll get bayonet if we'll need knives.

Oh don't worry about sleep. You're not going to get much of that. What you are going to get is physical training a lot of push-ups plenty of crunches climbing ropes repelling down a siding. Eating in about 5 minutes. And then if you are really good boy you get to pick up all the garbage that's laying around in the greenery. That's called policing the area. You'll do what you're told when you're told and how you're told. Because you ain't nothing anymore except for a GI. You have to earn your respect in the military. If these words are too harsh for you, you might have made a bad career choice.

He didn't give blunt response. He wrote the same thing twice even after I replied to his original comment. I also asked that as a joke. This is a forum, not military base. What do you expect me to do? If he himself didn't seem to reply to that as an offense, why are you so offended?
I didn't mean to offend anyone and I don't want to discuss this further.

I understand your point of view.
If I had attidue I'd be unemployed and out of my university that is military related.
However I'm not at work or at uni or in the military, I'm on the forum. And I don't know should I take "It'll take him but about 3 days to realize that he's in the army now" as the attempt to talk down on me or your personal experience?

And do you seriously believe I decided to go to that university or the army because I thought it'll be fun?

Everyone is different. You guys are making assumptions based on a comment on a forum...

I heard it all. I also know I'll have to mop the same floor 5 times in a row just because I was told to do so. I also know I'll have to gather leaves from forest just to spread them back there and then gather them again.

Whatever you do OP, make sure you wear clothing branded with the service you're joining when you report for Basic Training :D

My BIL is Croatian, I was Barjaktar at the wedding! It was a fun party/ceremony.

No worries. I didn't take any offense and I salute anyone willing to stand up and take an oath! The second response was typed more tongue in cheek (expounding on the fact that I thought you were headed to the US Mil at first, then realized it was a European Mil). For everyone else. I feel he has given an excellent account and has taken the recommendations onboard.

To LostCause, you will be fine. Head up, keep breathing, move to contact!

Thank you sir! 😊

This puts smile on my face.

People take oath for different reasons. Yet, regardless of these reasons they all take the same oath. I know that army is serious and that I won't be babied there, and I'm fine with that. I also know that you know all this way better than me, as you served for years as people said.

Hopefully, some day I'll be able to say the same.
