thanks for prompting me to do more work on it & get it the best I can, as you point out a bit of patience and time spent now will pay off in the long run :)
i shall sand it and stay away from the buffer :)
a work mate is giving me a piece of mahogany to use for the handle so im happy i have handle material sorted.
ill keep the pics coming :)
thanks guys

I think mahogany is too soft for knife handles. It will dent very easily.

It depends what type of Mahogany. Mahogany is one of the most variable woods in terms of density from one species to the next.

There are so many beautiful woods in New Zealand and Australia. Are you sure you want to go with Mahogany?

And by the way, plain wood handles may have a tendency to absorb water, and swell, shrink and crack over time. You might want to consider getting a piece of wood that is good at resisting the effects of water (or one that has been stabilised to that end).

ill just have to wait and see what hes got I guess. Failing that i may be able to find some NZ Kauri somewhere.
I just sketched up a pommel for the bottom of the handle :)
hopefully friend is working late again tonight so i can go grind it a bit more and start the pommel

EDIT; you have really got me to rethink the wood. ill look into something nicer! no rush i guess :) i must maintain patience

Hey guys, sorry no update in awhile so here one :)
this is going to be a big one! hope you dont mind

started making the handle bottom basher bit

knife is back from vacuum furnace heat treat. here's a pic of it after heat treat with the progress iv made on the bottom bit. the bottom basher bit made from some stainless propellor shaft :)

next i tested it on some wood. I split a bunch with the grain then hammered it into a wet piece against the grain

next i did loads and loads of sanding (by hand), sanding hardened D2 is hard, dont do it, listen to the knowledgeable people and just do the prep mate!!!
now its razor sharp and polished right up to the edge, no grind lines

ok so now the blade looks nice, better test its durability aye!? lol :)
first we have knife vs tin can lengthways. hammer check, can check, chopping block check

through the can and into the wood,

edge is sweet!

next i felt i needed to cut a coin in half

stupidly i tried to do it on a bit of wood first, so i just ended up hammering the coin into the bit of wood using the knifes edge, lol
still sweet

next i put it on a sheet of aluminium to try cut it again..

success!

Reminds me a bit of a sharpfinger knife.

Are you sure the edge didn't chip?

yea im sure, it was only slightly rough after the cutting the coin on the aluminium. t sharpened out with about 4 swipes on my extra fine diamond stone :)
its 57Rc by the way

Kinda reminds me of a some variants I have seen of chaveta knives.

Do you know of any good sources for the chaveta cigar roller's knife? Or even better...a custom maker that does one out of goos carbon steel?
