Going to start carrying

I've got to say the scenario you envision doesn't call for a knife.Never,EVER pull any kind of weapon unless you're prepared to use it to it's maximum. That's what the bad guys will expect and they'll react to it accordingly. If it's a couple guys, unarmed, looking to take your valuables that you're concerned about, there are a couple better choices. If you have time to pull out a knife and brandish it to intimidate, you have time to run away.if you don't have time to run away, consider giving up what they're after and letting the police deal with it.Is the $20 in your pocket or whatever worth your life? IS IT WORTH LIVING WITH HAVING TAKEN ANOTHER LIFE??If you truly fear for your life a blow to the throat is as deadly as a stab and incapacitates instantly,I knife wound seldom does. Also you must consider the consequences if everything goes perfectly, you've just pulled a knife on two unarmed men, possibly wounded or killed them, and it's likely their word against yours. You're gonna go to jail.Believe it or not the justice system isn't perfect, even in Canada.

Hey CriTiCize, what happen? You changed the occupation in your profile. This morning you said you were a "Army Green Beret"?

Very excellent point. However in 90% of the cases of jumps in my neighbourhood they are not after money of valuables. They are after the thrill of beating the sh*t out of someone. I have had friends who have been able to catch these guys off guard with a little backup of their own, or with a blade. In one situation a blade had to be used and the guy did get punished by the law, but not nearly as much as his attackers did, he said it was well worth it not to get incredibly beat up and then to have been left on the street in a bloody mess all night.

Also, about the whole if you have enough to to pull a knife you have a enough time to run. That is true, but these guys usually have cars, and if I think I have a chance to run I will take it, but if I know thats not an option I would like something else to relie on. And so you know, I would NEVER pull a knife on someone unless I was fully prepared to severely damage or even kill the person I am pulling it on. I want it as a last resort, but it won't do as a last resort if I can't use it.

Some of the tips here have been useful, I think next time I am wlaking I will concentrate less on the knife in my pocket and more on which ways I can escape, possible places cars can't follow, friends houses nearby, etc. But I am still going to carry and I am still ready to use it if I have to.

Dave, let me give you some advice. I agree with most of these guys here bout using a knife as a weapon, and I know your situation. HOWEVER, there are MANY other things to cary with you that will be far less dangerous and life threatening. (The last thing people think about when they stab someone, is what happens afterwards, in which case, they panic) Have you thought of carying pepper spray? stun gun? By the way, dont listen to critize, I've already given my input on him, and we can all see he doesn't know jack about what he's talking about. (Becuase we all know green berets weapon of choice is a balisong  ) Take it the safe way as I leave you with a very famous quote. "Live by the gun, die by the gun."

Focus on survival of your person instead of the harm of someone else. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

That's good advice Fireshaker. I always thought that the walking stick, cane, etc. would be way impractical, to take something that big everywhere I go would be a hassle. But Pepperspray is a great idea. We sell it at the store I work at and I hear it has no permanent effects, is effective very quickly and it's only slightly bigger than my knife.

I wouldn't mind still learning to use my knife however, because I use it extensively as a tool not only at work but at home and I like to carry it on me (I use it like a swiss army knife, only its a folding knife, I don't really like the swiss army knives as I find a blade has a million uses as a tool, and remember I was planning to use this as my last resort defensive). So as you can see, I will be more likely to have a knife on me than a can of pepper spray (I wouldnt carry the spray around everywhere, whereas I carry my knife everywhere except for at school).

If you guys know any key places to stab/slash with a knife that would be great. I have found a couple very limited resourses and have learned to get it out quickly and even get a slash accross the throat within a second (obviously if it is blocked I don't know what I would do, and I realise if it connected I may kill the person, so I would only use this if I couldn't deal with the situation any other way or didnt have spray on me). But I am learning and I feel slightly more confidentm, but more knowledge never hurt anyone.

Where to begin:rolleyes:
Skinwalker- I don't think Ira was "threatening" anyone. He was merely bringing up the point that you NEVER know what the other guy is carrying. Ira knows what he is talking about, sit and learn.

smiley-dave- All I have to say is, good luck. Without any training or knowledge of how to use a knife in a SD situation, you will be on the losing end of the deal. IMO, there is no way to just teach someone a few stabby areas. What you need is a background in techniques and LOTS of mental prep. along with LOTS of practice. If I were you, I would think long and hard about what you are doing here. You are saying that you are ready to kill someone if the situation arises. And as it has been mentioned, that is something that will haunt you for the rest of your life. There are tons of other ways to defend yourself besides drawing your blade.

Matt

Matt,
I have probably posted half a dozen times that a knife would be my last resort. I am even now considering pepper spray. But I realise that if I did pull one, even slight hesitation could result in the weapon being taken from me. I have a mindset right now that I will NOT EVER pull the knife unless I am prepared to kill. It is the same as having a gun, don't ever point a gun at someone you don't intend to shoot, lol, thats just not smart.

Smiley_dave_,

I don't think that you are really getting the message that the assembled multitude are giving to you.

This is a "general" blade discussion forum and you are trying to get someone here to tell you how to do something that IMHO is not only ill-advised but reprehensible. You were encouraged early in this thread by CriTiCiZe who is well on his way to proving that he is not only a troll but an incredibly inept and ill-informed one at that.

You have thus far received no reply to your post on this same subject on the "Practical Tactical Forum" and you might do well to wonder why no one there wants to step up and give you advice about how to kill someone. You might try the "Stryder Knives" forum but I don't think that you will get much help there either, though they may have some other suggestions for you.

Generally speaking I think that most of us would prefer to consider our knives in the full spectrum of their use as exceptionally interesting tools - not just as weapons.

I am not asking how do you kill someone. I am saying that I would like to have an extra form of protection. I have been enlightened that knives aren't the greatest for this. But the fact of the matter is that right now I have a knife and not much else, that may change in the near future, but right now thats what I have. All I am looking for is a little advice on the most suitable way to use it on an attacker if I ever need to (no, I did not ask for alternatives to using a knife, I already plan to not ever use it unless I feel that I 100% absolutely have to). What you people on this forum fail to understand is that I know that there are many other things I can do to avoid pulling my knife, but IF, IF I ever had to, what should I do? So far I have been given little if any help on that matter. I am sure there is better advice than "Freekin stab him" out there. If I were enlightened I may know where the best places to stab someone are, where I can paralyze but not kill, not where the nerve points are (to stop an attacker but not kill). Obviously at the moment I don't know this, the only places I know are the throat and heart, so unless someone tells me a better or less lethal way to take out an attacker I will think of that as my primary focus if I ever need to use a weapon.

For example, let's just say one of you has just purchased your first gun and you know a head shot will stop someone cold (I dont know if that is 100% true, but this is just my example, so bear with me). If you ask others and they all give you the runaround instead of providing information (such as, shoot in the leg and then run, now they can't follow you, or shoot their right leg and it'll be harder to drive, shoot the weapon hand, etc.) then in a confrontation you will just shoot them in the head. Unless I get some information on how to use a knife properly I won't, I will either end up pissing off my attacker causing more harm to myself, or I will end up needlessly killing someone.

My intent is prevention, but I can't do that without the proper knowledge.

You missed my point entirely. Training is key. Thats all I am going to say now. You simply can't go and stab knowing that IF you sever the bicep you will disable the arm, etc. But, if that's the way you want to go...good luck. The other problem is, have you thought, maybe people here on the forums dont want to be responsible for giving you that advice, especially IF you do end up killing someone?
Matt:rolleyes:

Good point Jazzman. I doubt any of you will be liable if I do end up doing anything, but still a good point. But I do know that training is key. I have learned now that I will not find any information here, I will instead look to books, videos or instructors, as they can accually help me in a fight if need be.

I thank you all for the alternatives that you have given me to using a knife. They will help in me I don't doubt. But I still feel very uncomfaortable with a knife, considering I haven't learned anything about them from here. IF, (stressing the IF) if I ever had to use a knife, I need to be confident I can do so correctly. Like I said, I thought I could learn some of the basics here, or be given some resources but you guys seem to be very against me learning to use a knife, the reason for that I am unsure, it's not like I am going to read a couple of replies and then feel I am ready to take on an attacker, that would be arrogant, but I have already been daily practicing what I do know, and continually look for more resources to learn more to practice practice more and to be more prepared.

Smiley_dave_

Dude, I say if your life is in immediate/serious danger, and there is no other way out, then use whatever you got to defend yourself. In situations like that, you become a beast fighting for survival and can be a very deadly individual, training or no training.

Every man has the right to defend himself, in my opinion at least.

P.S However, pulling any kind of a wepon out against an UN ARMED individual is not the way to go man, use your weapon as a DEAD LAST resort, if you REALLY REALLY think your life is in danger.

Smiley dave. Listen. It doesn't sound to me that you're wanting to learn how to defend yourself. You're wanting to learn how to attack someone with a knife if they attack you first. Pepper spray is your best option. And if that doens't work, run like hell. Theres always somewhere to run. Why are you so intent on killing someone? You say that now, but once you actually kill someone, it will change your life forever, usually not in a good way. If in fact you HAVE to use a knife, and it is your only alternative, go for places that are non-lethal. Some of these are the inner thigh, arm pit, arm, leg. But, to tell you the truth, you cant just expect to pick up a knife, and use it like a trained master. You should look for training elsewhere than in this forum. A very usefull martial art that you can take up is akido. Usually available in most places, look for it. Read up on it. And lose your thirst for killing, it wont get you anywhere but prison. ;)

Fireshaker is right, maybe you should try to take some good martial arts courses? that would not only help you now, but also down the road as you get older, it's a good way to gain self confidence and good self defense skills. Ofcourse, lazy couch potato like myself quit training Kung Fu years ago, if I wasnt as lazy, and continued taking lessons, I would be close to black belt now. :grumpy:

Yeah,

I didnt really think he was threatening him, my apologies for saying so. I get that way myself and post things that contain a bit too much emotion. Even though there was a good point being made, I think the point is being made in a more productive manner by the continuing posts on this thread. I think Smiley_dave_ is sincere in his question and that is something deserving of respect, even if other people can be frustratingly stupid like saying "just frikkin stab em". This guy came in here asking a question as a man, he should be treated as a man, Ira was acting like me when I was 16. I got a feeling Ira has a lot of real world experience that would add quite a bit to this conversation, I just thought it was ironic that someone was being scolded for immaturity in such an immature manner.

Heck, my own statements bother me in the fact that I feel like a ex-smoker hassling someone with a cigarette. Couple years ago my response woulda been something like "Pull a knife on me and watch me turn you in to a sack of splintered bones". Hippocritical and preachy to some extent but I believe it so I say it. You guys prob do the same.

......................................................

I think it is a great subject for all of us to discuss. So many of us pack steel in the name of self defense and utility it is good that we have the repect for violence that we have. So we carry these things and we are charged with the responsability of the consiquenses of using them. There are those that go around with thier knives that frighten, hurt, and kill people without a care or worry. We are not those people and I think thats why Smiley asked his question here instead of some thug who cuts up people who owe him drug money. There is a lot of good advice I think. The most important point is that it is not something you want to do, it is something you avoid, something that is a very last resort. If you think it is cowardly to avoid confrontation you can always think of it as you sparing your attacker the savage injuries he would recieve from your defense.

Also important is that good old Machevellian addage "Pray not for war but always be prepared for it". Training and reasearch is a good idea even if you arnt gonna carry a knife. So I dont like guns; didnt stop me from learning how to field strip various models and practice at the range with my gun-nut buddy. So I hate getting into fights; that hasnt slowed down my rigorous martial arts training.

For this situation there is wisdom, knowlege and skill..... none of em come easy...none of em are instantaneous...and you can always use more. Personnaly I have just begun:)

Ira, I would like peace with you. I was just goin to bat in defense of Smiley_dave_ and it prob wasnt my place

First of all, if you intend to use a knife to defend yourself against unarmed attackers you will probably go to jail. Second, flashy balisong manipulations are the last thing to do when you need your knife for protection. Why give your attacker time to see your weapon? Why put yourself at risk of losing the knife? Also if you ever pull a weapon of any sort, it has to be with the intention of using it. For example you pull your balisong start swinging and the BG is unimpressed, now you got no intention of cutting him, so what do you do? Keep swinging and make a mean face while he takes out his knife and puts it to use. Don't get me wrong I love bali's, but if you ask any of the experts over on the bali forum they will probably agree when I say that flashy manipulations aren't for defending you life. If you had a gun and were about to be shot would you spin it around like a cowboy or would you shoot? When you have a weapon one of the things that makes the weapon effective is the fact that the bad guy doesn't know you have it. I personaly would never use my knife or my gun in any situation that I didn't feel my life was threatened. If I was in fear of my life I would not let my attacker know about my weapon untill he felt it. Also I feel that Wolfman was just trying to show what could of happened in a situation like this. It is wrong to tell someone a bunch of crap that could get them killed. Wolfman was right about all the BS from our newest troll. Why not try pepper spray and stay out of trouble.

This is the FIRST answer to my origonal question. Now I know about some less-lethal areas. I also now know that Akido may help me. These are the sort of tips I came here looking for. I came here looking for links, tip, resources on knife self defense, and instead I got reasons not to use a knife. I have said time and time again it is a last resort, get the fact into your head that I am not going to a knife as a weapon unless it is 100% necessary. I mean, what you guys have been saying to me is like telling someone who owns a handgun (to say, protect his home) and then telling him not to ever go and practice his shot because it's better to find other ways to get around shooting someone invading his home. If that person is ever in a situation where he must use the gun to save himself, he will have no training at all.

To further add to my point. In Karate, it is said not to ever use the skills you learn unless you have no choice, so if the main lesson in Karate is to avoid fights, why do they teach you to fight? I'll tell you why, Just In Case. That is exactly why I wanted some tips, Just In Case something might happen.

I can't believe how much flack this kid is getting just for asking for some tips or links on self defense with a knife. Thousands of people on this forum carry a knife "just in case" as a primary self defense item. This guy is just looking for some help.

Smiley,

Go to the practical tactical section and use the search feature. Search for words like, "Knife defense books", "books", "Videos". Any of these terms should bring up some good posts on the very same topic you tried asking.
I think part of the reason you are getting so much flack for your question is the fact that you are only 16 and are trying to learn how to use a knife against another person. You also might want to word things differently. Saying that you want to "show the bad guy that you mean business" shows that you are uneducated on this topic. As others have stated, do not use a weapon as an intimidation tool. It could really ruin your life. The only time you could use a weapon is if you honestly believe that your life is in grave danger and you are afraid for your life. if that is the situation, you should be fighting for your life, not trying to intimidate people. There is no in between with a weapon. You either use it to defend yourself, or you don't pull it out at all.

Just take into consideration what some are trying to stress to you, Life is precious, don't be so quick to want to stab someone.

Also,

If you are serious about staying safe and out of trouble, try learning some street smarts techniques. Threat assessment, street smarts, and common sense are more important than a knife ANY DAY.

Lets just cut him some slack, guys. We know he is only 16, instead of yelling at him, try giving him some good advice and set him moving in the right direction.
