Hey everyone I didn't want to say anything until I talked to Jeff Randall and found out they have a spot for me on the next Jungle survival course in November. This is something I have been wanting to do for 10 years. I am honored to go with Mike Perrin and Jeff Randall as well as 4 other students and a survival instructor from the military in Peru. This will be the only scheduled trip for Randall's Adventure & Training in 2007.

2007 Amazon Jungle Survival Skills Class
November 4th - 9th

Skills Taught:

Shelter construction, food and water procurement, jungle navigation, trap and snare construction, medicinal plants, fire building under adverse conditions, raft construction.

Itinerary:

Day 1, Sunday: Leave Iquitos early and travel up past the headwaters of the Amazon River (where the Rio Maranon and Rio Ucayali meet to form the Amazon) and continue up the Ucayali. A lot of wildlife/bird photography opportunities during the trip up river. We will also be stopping at various villages along the way to interact with the local culture. Late evening: Arrive at camping location along a black water Amazon tributary. Main boat drops us off and leaves. Dinner and overnight stay at this location.

Day 2, Monday: Hike for half a day up the tributary. Make a permanent base camp and build permanent shelter. (See Google Earth map of trip destination.) During this time you will learn how to build a structure with nothing but what the jungle provides and also learn to weave a waterproof roof, make a raised bed, and a sleeping mattress from palm leaves. Evening: jungle walk to gather food from the jungle (Palm Grubs, fruits, etc.).

Day 3, Tuesday: Morning: Primary jungle exploration, identifying edible and medicinal plants, water procurement from jungle vegetation, and basic jungle navigation. Evening: fishing along the tributary for dinner. Night: Search for alligators from a dugout canoe.

Day 4, Wednesday: Trap and snare construction techniques and demonstration using only a machete. Evening: night hunt in the jungle with local Indian guide.

Day 5, Thursday: Gather material and build rafts for the whole team. (All day job)

Day 6, Friday: Load all gear on the rafts and begin our trip back down the tributary. Meet up with the main boat at the main Amazon and begin our trip back to Iquitos.

Any Jungle tips would be greatly appreciated. I will be posting my Jungle Survival gear list soon.

1. Bring lots of DEET
2. Buy a machete when you get there
3. Bring a water resistant camera
4. Don't bring anything you aren't prepared to lose
5. Have fun and give us a full report!

Bring a water resistant camera???????????

I am taking my own Tramontina 18" and mora 20000000000000.

Awesome! I am so jealous.

When my son gets older, if he stills wants to be an adventurer, we can go together.

Good Luck

Chris

Awesome! It sounds as though it'll be a trip of a lifetime! Have a great time! I look forward to reading all about it.

That sounds like a fantastic trip.

I would suggest...

Treat your clothes with Sawyers permethrine military clothing dip before you go. I use it here in heavily infested tick and chigger habitat and it works great.

Expect to be either soaking wet, slowly drying out, or sweating through the entire time and plan to take care of your feet accordingly.

Medicate any fungal infections you have, or even think you might have beforehand, jock itch and foot rot are bad news in that enviroment.

I don't know what kind of shape you are in at present but you have time in the next two months to give yourself and overhaul. Work on cardio and stretching it will make the trip far more enjoyable.

I use regular issue, panama tread jungle boots. They aren't anything special or high-tech but they are great when broken in.

Man! That is so cool!! You're gonna have a great time!

Looking forward to reading about it and seeing LOTS OF PICS!!:D

Are you going to take a journal or something to write your experiences as you go?

Good luck!

I am taking a small Ontario bait knife, Old hickory 6" butcher to use and abuse along with an Old Hickory 3.25" paring knife.

That sounds like a ridiculous amount of fun. If you don't mind telling, how much does a trip like that cost? I would love to do one someday.

It's funny, but I don't know if the RAT guys use their own stuff on trips like this. I was talking to the Ontario group for a while at their booth at Blade, and asked about the RTAK and their jungle expeditions. One of the guys said that he would give his Ontario stuff to one of their guides or porters, and would use a piece of crap $2 machete that he bought locally. He already knew how well their stuff would perform, so he wanted to see how it would perform in another persons hands. Plus, it made the guides really happy.

Stay Safe Bro----

Looking Forward To A Full Report

Make Sure You Stretch Daily Too!!!!!(especially That Knee)

Sincerely

Dr.Bill

I'm a cheap old guy who leans toward simple, economical knives, but I'm not sure I'd agree with all your choices above. I've got a nice older 8 inch Old Hickory slicer, but it seems stiffer and sturdier than those currently made. I also bought some of those cheap Ontario "bait knives" you mentioned, and I'm not all that impressed with them. They cost only $2.99 or $3.99 at the time, so draw your own conclusions. Considering the time, effort, and money you'll no doubt invest in your proposed trip, I think you should at least consider taking a couple of $10 Moras (the 4 inch Frost Clipper maybe) and a $20 Cold Steel Bushman (the 7 inch original, not the Bowie model), in addition to a decent 18 inch machete, of course. Have fun and don't get eaten by the bugs and the fungi. :D

Eric,

I was going to suggest he pick up one of your M2K sheaths! That is very generous of you.

While you are here... You neeeeed to make a SBT sheath. Mac

Did they give you a list of items to bring? Are you restricted in what you can take with you in any way?
