Going to the Amazon with the RAT Team.

Tinactin foot powder for crotch rot, nasty stuff, keep the boys clean and dry sans knickers.
Good sports sandles excel in this environment, I suggest Chaco brand.

Why is it specifically that you recommend sport sandals?

It sounds like a fantastic trip. I look forward to hearing the debrief. Mac

As for permethrin, let me give you one of our odd experiences using it. We treated our clothes with it during a Costa Rica trip once. Mike, myself, and a few others were up on top of a mountain rapelling down a waterfall. Of course we got soaking wet. After going off rope and getting back in the dry and sun, Mike started to develop an allergic reaction to the permethrin and had to remove his shirt and wash off before getting better. Not being sure if it was the permethrin he put the shirt back on and the reaction started again. So, we're not 100 percent sure it was the premethrin but since then he has not been able to wear any clothing treated with it. No one else was bothered by it. Anyway, since that time we have advised all of our jungle participants of the "risks" associated with using treated clothing.

Just as a note, the U.S. Military, at least the Marines use permethrin. My unit is leaving withn the next few weeks and our Corpmen are gathering up all our uniforms and using this stuff. They tell us it will be good for about 60 washes, then need to be reapplied. No personal experiance with it, but I hope the allergic reaction isn't too commen, or alot of us will be scratchin' for along time...

Glassjaxs,

Thanks for your service. If it's any comfort my experience was just the opposite, without it I was scratching, and trying really hard not to scratch, and then scratching until I bled. After a few days I looked like Dick Cheney's huntin' buddy. The stuff makes you a walking WMD for chiggers. Mac

Glass Jaxs,

We got ours treated before UDP to Oki but I just sprayed DEET. Thailand, Phillipines u need more DEET!!

Marines I knew did get bumps and red with that "P" stuff, I never used it ! not alot but a few.

Oceanside or Stumps?

Back to topic, I always wanted to while on leave during my time on active duty but now disabled will try and see if it can be done.

My tip, know where things r at all times. The jungle can be unforgiving if u lose sight of things.

While on the topic of permethrin use in the amazon and since its derived from chrysanthemums, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if chewing on dried chrysanthemums would work in the blood stream as a natural repellent (like garlic) or perhaps rubbing it on your skin as many aboriginals use medicinal plants in the jungle to heal.

I grew up drinking Chrysanthemum tea and am unsure if would work as a insecticide or repellent since its diluted/mixed with tea. Perhaps processing the flower makes it lethal to bugs or maybe its gotta be used solo and not diluted if in raw form? They sell dried chrysanthemum by the bags here in NYC's Chinatown. Any thoughts would be interesting

Be safe and have fun.

GlassJax,

When are you shipping out? Drop me an email jeff@jungletraining.com since we would like to send you something sharp to carry along and let us know how it works for you.

Jeff

I'm very jealous. Have fun dude. Come back with lots of pics and cool stories. God speed.

I was off in Japan over the summer did some rock climbing and hiking, that sort of thing. Funny enough got my bug bites from the plane ride back. I ended up with scabies or something similar, and had to coat myself with a 10% permethrin cream for a couple nights. The stuff does work really well, but made me feel a little light-headed, and nauseous.

go to the store and buy some permethrin cream and apply a little to your skin, see if you have any side effects. If not use the dip...

and enjoy the trip!

Chad

hey Tony, nice bump. ;)

Sounded like a great opportunity. I'm going to Yosemite this summer (hopefully!) for the first time. I'm really excited.
