Golok or Parang?

Ok--that's just a different post than the one I had originally referenced way back in 2010 in this thread. :D:thumbup:

The picture wasn't an actual prototype, though. It was a sketch, and IIRC Joe simply responded to it saying "way ahead of you, guys."

Hi this is my new toy 10" parang there are other models with 12" and shape.
http://www.outdoordynamics.com.my/
It´s made in Malaysia with rustic facilities and using car springs.
I think is a good blade easy to sharp keep sharp and easey to repear if you kit an stone as you see with my diamond stone.
The finish was very rustic=no well finish spine, edge with grinding marks, handel with some plastic left beouse hot blade insertion, after some hard field work the blade took some play so I put out the pin filled with epoxi and put again the pin.
You can see I finished all these "defect" very easy with some sandpaper, file and epoxi.
As it came without shealth I made my ownone using some scraped spoiler from crash car, to avoid cutting my fingers when taking in&out the blade and cath the shealth from the hanging cord ;-)
I put a lot of pics this blade is the best chopper I have and I was able to do littel tasks with precision you can see the carvong stick done only with light chopping.
The handle is the best one I have used for chopping.
Summary: cheap, strong, light and great blade, from now my prefered bushblade.

I ended up getting the Golok, and I love it. That being said, eventually I want to get the Parang too.

A bit of a random woods find, but that's pretty cool! The coffin bone is still there! You can see how tiny it is compared to the inside of the hoof--the spongey flesh of the horse's hoof would have filled all that space to act as a shock absorber. Thanks for sharing that pic!

nice to learn some vocavulary.....and perhaps now I need to try a golok which one let me know something around 10" blade becouse it has to fit inside my daybackpack ;-)

I'm not sure where to find one quite that short--perhaps take a standard model and cut the blade down? Maybe ValiantCo has something?

I did the same thing. Then I purchased a second Golok as a backup and a Condor Parang with sheath to try out in another order. It only took me about 30 minutes to realize I really like the Condor Golok. They are selling like hotcakes.

How about the mini golok or mini parang?
oh wait crap, Joe Shhhh.
Craaap Joe...I just got the Golok & Parang from Condor a few weeks ago & I just placed an order for a sheath for the Parang(got one already for the Golok) ! I said I was all set in the Machete line....now I hear "Mini Parang"....Thanks Joe, my wife is gonna kill me !

I've been playing with my Golok (I have the leather Condor sheath) & it rides good on the hip & is a really good chopper ! I like it, I had to mod the sheath to be SouthPaw friendly ...that was easy ! Now I wait for the Parang sheath to arrive & mod it & then I'll play with it & see which I like best....might do a mini-side by side review of the 2 blades !

Anybody got a measurement on the width of the Condor Golok? The new 2011 full-tang model. Looking to make a PVC sheath for it and need to see if my local hardware store has the correct diameter pipe.

What dimension are you looking for? I just measured one for ya'. Looks like the widest point of the blade (vertically edge to spine) is about 2 and 1/4" and the distance between the two most opposing points is about 3".

Thanks, 42B. I needed the edge-to-spine width at the widest point. What's the "opposing points" measurement?

If you were to draw a line straight out from grip, it would be the two points farthest out from the line. The distance between them would be that distance.

If I was smart I'd be getting to bed right now, but instead, I decided to make this diagram. :p

What does the farthest opposing points measurement tell you? Is it important for sheath-making? If so, that could explain why my sheaths require so much trial-and-error :o

Thanks for making that diagram, otherwise I still wouldn't get i!

Yes, it's important for sheath making in most instances, particularly if making a simple pouch-style sheath where you just slide the blade in the mouth--like your pvc pipe project. Both points will have to pass through the sheath at the same time, therefore in order for there to be room for that, it must be as wide as the space between the two most opposing points. Another option would be to use a pvc pipe of dimensions that just allow the blade to fit in, but then cut a channel out of the back side so it can actually be drawn.

:)
