Golok vs Kukris

Dear Novadak,

The pic of the knife you posted looks similar to the golok I mentioned but the one I have looks slightly more modern. The tip is sharper and the blade is broader.

Didn't mean to make fun of Cold Steel. I have a healthy respect for Cold Steel people. They do make great knives.

A lot of people have asked about the golok and where to get one. Well, come and visit my country. They are being sold in various place s and are dirt-cheap.

Of course, there are some imitations,so to speak but the REAL ones are really good stuff.

Is this the knife we're all talking about? I admit I'd never even heard of one before, but it looks interesting!

Is that the right knife? If not, do you have any pictures?

I'm not sure what you mean by this somewhat confrontational statement -- are you saying that you'd like to see knife companies manufacturing goloks, or that they should stay out of Malaysia, since you have all the knife you could ever want in the golok? Or that knife companies selling stuff in Malaysia should try to sell affordably priced production versions of the golok? Or just that the golok is the best jungle knife out there?

I find that what I do with large knives usually involves more rendering of large pieces of wood into small pieces of wood (habitual pyromania) than poking at big snakes, how does the golok fare for chopping/splitting duty? How heavy are they? Do you have any pictures, vital stats, etc.?

Thanks for your last post, the thought of stepping on 12' cobras and having to evict roving crotch-leeches is almost as scary as the thought of a $1000 CS khukuri...

I take no offence with what you have said about me. In fact, I am beginning to like you. You've got spunk.

It's all right. I don't mind getting insulted or being called names by people who know their knives and then some.

Obviously, you know more than your share. Since I am new to this forum, I look forward to learning more from you about blades and other things related to sharpened metal objects. Cheers.

Howdy Howie,

I haven't had such a good laugh for ages. You are a laugh a second. Thanks for making my day. I have seen your Grizzly on Discovery channel. I am glad the monster is not native to my country.

Still a student, huh?! Well, work hard brother. Success is but a small step away.
Stay sharp, catch my drift?

Merry Xmas in advance.

HA! You fear COBRAS??? I LAUGHT at cobras! I still remember the first time I saw a cobra. I simply grabbed it behind the head and through it as far as I could. Problem solved! I'll also never forget the time I was attacked by a grizzly bear. I pulled otu my butter knife, which cuts butter.... like... butter, looked at my knife, looked at the bear, and RAN! It caught up with me, and I had to do something. So I held up my open palm and said STOP! There is no need for violence! The bear then pulled out a golok and cut me into itty bitty pieces.

Seriously though, we need to choose ONE difference between the knives, other than the price ($1000 to $15??? WOW!). Hmmm... a Cold Steel Golok? So do you want to argue about which steel is better for the environment, or do you want to argue about which design is best?

By the way, I would hardly say the designs are similar. They may serve the same purpose, but they look NOTHING alike.

Howie

Golok, golok... Apa dah jadi ni? Told you some guys will get pissed off when you compare the golok with the kukri..

RM15 for Golok? That was a looong time ago *hee-hee!*

Prices are already inflated due to scarcity of makers and demand. You can get a good piece for about US$19 excluding shipping. The blades are fashioned out of leaf-springs used in heavy vehicles.
Since the blades are fashioned out of carbon steel, rust is the blade's biggest problem. We haven't got any heat-treating technology to get the blade up to standards where its hard, sharp and corrosion-resistant. If you guys are really interested in pictures, maybe I could post some. Be patient cos I'll have to source for the blades...

You too, Golok. In fact, I apologize for being so easily nettled earlier. We've had so many nuisance posters in here lately that I've been even nastier than usual.

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

Dear Golok,

It's my turn now to wake you up! First of all, BE NICE! You are in OTHER folks web space....have some respect will ya? I didn't check here for just one day and you poped out like you're superman from Malaysia!? No doubt GOLOK is a very good forest choper but remember THAT applies ONLY to OUR own tropical forest? Try the GOLOK's thinly sharpen edge on a sessioned silver maple and snap it goes!(I mean just the edge...)

The first thing we need to turn the GOLOK into a superior choper is to get the heat threating right! Once that is solved, rust prevention is better hance opening a coconut to drink in order to survive wouldn't kill you from "Tetanus" or rust poisoning....

Oh..and BTW, welcome to BF.

Razor - Theres no need to apologize to Golok as I, a proud Malaysian find his post to be intimidating the first time i read it!

You see, just like China where they boast that they invented this and that but because they are SO arrogant, they were left behind when the rest of the world moved on....

I'm not trying to suck up to anyone or any nation but because CS has some "prove" to back up their claims, no doubt they wil be proud but why challange them? Is GOLOK the superior weapon/blade? If you want to compare, try Yoshindo Yoshihara's work then? Even his tiniest work will out perform the Golok! To survive in the forest does not depend on the blade on hand but what he/she has up there, the BRAIN! If you still remember Mr. GOLOK, the woman who was lost in the Malaysian forest for 12 days and survived? She was a botanist! Who are you then may i ask? I admid that i'm a city slicker and know jack about the jungle but i've been in many expidition to know enough to survive in it without a BIG FAT BLADE! Think about it, food for thought for you!

Shalom Keninshiro!

Apa Khabar?

I heard about you from my blade mates.
You are known as "He who have many knives." That's a complimentary title.

I am sure you and I will meet one day soon.

I have seen the Himalayan Imports website.

Bill Martino has done Nepal and the Kami villagers a very big favour. I am happy for him and the Nepalese too.

The kukris at HI are very impressive. I told Bill some time ago that his kukris are wonderful and the prices are almost as high as the mountains where the knives come from. Of course, once the currency exchange rate takes place, it tends to take a quantam leap in my country.

Those $15 goloks can only be obtained in my country. Florida is quite a distance away.

However, if you pop in for a visit later on. I am sure I can locate a couple of these lethal el-cheapos for you.

Thanks for a very informative piece on your personal preferences.

I will keep in mind that Ontario military machete you mentioned.

Canada, I understand, is a very cold country (heard from friends who've been there) with very warm people. The kind of place I like to visit some day.

Hey, that's where Greg Lightfoot comes from! The LCC is a beautiful piece - value for money.

Fuaahh! This is very good Encik Golok! selling Malaysia where our tourism minister can't even do!

Bet there'll be plenty of queries about the golok.. Like I said, if we have the heat treatment right, C&C machines, the TAC-GOLOK and SPECWAR-PARANG and SPECOPS-KERAMBIT ain't that far away, but first, I must pass the hat around the office so that you could sign in for a course at the ABS school in Texarcana!

Hi Kenny,

You are among the 7 or 8 chaps to ask for the whereabouts of that $15 golok.

I would like to oblige you but these are all in my country.

And they are not US$15 but $15 my country's currency. That adds up to about US$6.

The catch is you got to come here on holiday and see them for yourself. Outside Malaysia, goloks are probably found in Indonesia but over there, I think the design is slightly different.

Golok,

You might just want to try to round up a few examples and ship this way. I'm sure we can find a few members to offset the expense.

Golok, the HI khukuris may seem expensive to you, but I assure you that they are well worth the money. They are tough as hell and won't let you down. Compared to $300 tactical folders nowadays, their prices aren't exactly "as high as the mountains where they come from" (though I like your simile). Of course, your $15 golok works for you, so to each their own, I guess.

Bob

Hi Not2sharp,

Show me the money! ha. ha.

Dear Marion,

I took a peek at the Talon site as you have suggested. I admit I am a bit of hilly-billy when it comes to talonite.

Is it the latest "in-thing" as far as blades are concerned? When will it ever be affordable for the work-to-death-for-low-pay man-in-the-street?

Mr. Golok.....it was nice to meet up with you. This golok thingy' will go far i must say....Once we get the heat treating right, "Tactical SpecOps Golok" will not be far away....

BTW, my apologies for over heating.....i have the tendency to do that.....
