Golok vs Kukris

golok,

"... talonite.

Is it the latest "in-thing" as far as blades are concerned? When will it ever be affordable for the work-to-death-for-low-pay man-in-the-street?"

Check out David Boye's knives, especially the 'dendritic cobalt' blades. He makes small fixed blades and folders. This material has a lot in common with talonite, which is also like stellite, a cobalt alloy. They don't corrode, even in salt water, sharpen easily, cut even when dull.

Golok,

If I come to your country to get a knife, I won't know anyone there but you. Will you put me up for a couple of days? We can go hunt up some reticulated pythons in the jungle and lop them to bits with my new golok. Cobras will do if we don't find any large pythons.

Seriously though, who wants to chip in some cash and see if we can't place us an order for some goloks from our new member here?

You called?

Sure I'm in. Just let me know what you find and how much you want for it.

I'd be interested in chipping in some $ for a Golok that had been checked on location for quality by a Bladeforums member.

Nice meeting you too, Eric.

I must say I was very impressed with your collection and the ones you had on the table the other day.

No wonder your name has been mentioned with great respect among the few bladesmen walking around.

See you another day!

Anyway, i hope you can join us again this weekend same time same place together with Khor. I'll bring the rest of my knives for your enjoyment and not forgetting my pride and joy, the "Odessa II". This piece will let you have an idea of how Talonite feels like.

Golok, Welcome to the Forums. I must say it is nice to see my fellow countrymen in here. This place is great because we can share our opinions and that is what it is a place to share. We try not to offend. I know of the outragous prices of knives made in the US being sold in Malaysia. When I went back earlier this year Eric aka Keninshiro hung out together and bought some knives from me because it was way cheaper. I must say there is no way I would ever bring a thousand dollar knife to the jungle. A $15 machete will do nicely. Not that I have much experince in the jungle at all. I am a city boy. Now can you ship me a golok???

P.S. Yo, Howie your post made me laugh so much I almost fell off my chair. Right on dude.

Nice to hear from a kindred spirit in the
Knife World.

One of your pals has mentioned your name. He's looking forward to see you.

Perhaps we can meet next time when you are back in the country.

Wait a minute, isn't golok same as parang? And the different name is due to different state/district?

As a golok/parang user for a for more than 20yrs., my vote is on golok/parang. I do not know the name of the steel, but I do know that most of them are made from leaf-spring of motor vehicle, mostly lorrys. If you are looking for a good one, I recomend to look at Kuala Kangsar.

Bugisman, How are you??? Most of the leaf springs on cars are made of high carbon 5160 tool steel. Great knife material. I have two Siegle bowies made from this material. Not stain resistant. You do have to take care of it but gets a great edge.

You are right, Bugisman. Kuala Kangsar is the place to go for goloks.

I recommend the stalls near the Kuala Kangsar Bridge. I wonder if the stalls are still there. I haven't visited the place for years.
But I have this urge to revisit the place.

Hi AncientSul,

Thanks for that bit of info on the leaf springs and its tensile strength. Now I know better. I heard the springs from the Mercedes Benz are among the best.

The Nepalese apparently use those to make some of their best kukris.

I want A golok too and a kerambit. So golok, samo, or keninshiro? Can you get us some? I will be glad to pay for knife shipping and a bit for your time. I am sure that several folks are interested and you might make a little $$....?

How do the military Goloks compare? Commonwealth forces have had a large variety of these knives issued, and they are readily available on the surplus market.

OOooo....the Golok is getting heat! Samo, myself, roadkill and golok will be making a trip to golok land in Kuala Kangsar(a little district in the state of Perak in Malaysia...and that's where my mom was born and raise too
smile.gif
) when Samo return from N.Y on the 15th. Once we get our hands on some Golok, i'll take some digital pix for your viewing. Then you can decide if it's your cup of tea.

IF...i said IF everything goes well, HOPEFULLY in the year 2002 blade show, we'll have a booth there with em' Tactical goloks and kerambits with all the sexy stuff like g-10 handles, mokume bolsters and black water buffalo handles!

Till the....

Never done any business with kris cutlery, but know someone who has, and is quite pleased. He brought a barong and a sundang to Reno I admired.

Cecil Quirino at KC has newly made stuff that looks similar to the golok and also offers older used sandata from all over, including goloks. Here's the link if you are interested.

Hi Bsteel,

I am not sure the authorities in my country allow the shipment of golok overseas.

They are a bit strict about such things but I will check with my friends.

Hi Not2Sharp,

I understand that the miitary kukris are the standard issue for gurkha soldiers. They are nothing special but highly functional and fearfully sharp.

They are mainly for one purpose - decapitation in close combat quarters. If that doesn't happen, then it's a hand or ear whichever comes first or nearer.

Sorry about being so graphic. My uncle who's an ex-soldier has two. I don't think he did anything nasty with them. Now he mainly uses them during his hunting trips - catching wild squirrels or for wild boar hunts.
