Good All-Around Pocket Knife for Under $50?

Benchmade Griptilian(551), you can get em for $65. Axis lock, a 3.5 inch 440C blade, and Benchmade quality :D . That or a Spyderco Delica, which you can get for $40.

Like Vincent already said, you can get a lot of knife for $50.
The Victorinox Spartan, Tinker, and Soldier are the "basic" SAK models...all are outstanding.
Opinels are simply amazing cutters for the price.

Just wanted to add this point. There's no reason to be limited to mass-produced factory folders just to stay within a $50 budget. There are very nice 'tacticals', hunting knives, vintage slipjoints, genuine issue bayonets, and even handmade customs in the $50 range.

Some examples:
www.BladeCutlery.net - starting at $52
www.anzaknives.com - many under $50
Buck fixed blades - Nighthawk, Special, Vangard

And look for the best prices, closeouts, and specials. By shopping around you may find you can afford much better products than you thought.

Best Wishes,
Bob

A tad over your $50 budget but worth it.

Here's another vote for the Spydie Delica. The blade is [font=arial, helvetica]ATS-55, handle ergonomics are excellent and of course there is that wonderful hole. ;)

Does the VNox compact have a Can Opener?
Yes, it's one of the functions of the combination (or combo) tool......

Please see this thread:
My EDC Story - Victorinox Combo Tool Story

...and before you ask - yes it works about as well for me as the standard Victorinox can-opener -
of course it depends on what you're used to - but you CAN (pun intended :D) see the debate in that thread referenced above starting at post #30 on the second page for me (sorry the photos no longer show, as hotlinking to ImageStation no longer works)

That is the cocobolo verison. I got the delrin version (which is _almost_ as nice, identical steel) for well under 50.00. (I got the winterbottom)

That Queen D2 is great stuff, but these come dull, so be prepared to spend some time getting it sharp... once you're there, it stays that way for a long time.

You have an enormous SAK selection for 50 dollars. You can also get an Opinel nº8 or nº9(combined with a SAK it works great).

Buck 110 and 112 are both strong and can be found for an excelent price.
I've seen the Buck Sirus for around 50 dollars, I don't know how good it is as I haven't used it.
The Buck Alpha Folding Hunter is quite good (although bit heavy), I've used mine a lot and it stood up to the punishment well.
The Buck Rush is around 45 dollars. I like mine a lot, the assisted opening is fun, and although a bit on the small size, the blade can handle many daily cutting chores.

Benchmade Griptillians and Mini-Griptillians are a bit over 50 dollars, but they are some of the best EDC folders out there, IMO. The Pika and Mini-Pika are great buys, for only 25 bucks.

I recently bought a Gerber Gator, for 45 dollars, and I'm very pleased with it's performance. It is quite tough and the handles are very comfortable.

There are lots of good knives in the 50 dollar price range:
-SOG Flash I, Flash II, Twitch, Twitch II and Twitch XL.
-Camillus Heat.
-Lots of Case slipjoints.
-Cold Steel Pro Lite and Voyager.
-CRKT M-16, M-18 and M-21 series.
-Emerson Endeavor and Traveler.
-Gerber Firestorm, Paraframe and E-Z Out (just $22!).
-Kershaw Chive (the Blur is a bit over 50 bucks, but completely worth it).
-Ka-Bar Dozier folders, some of the best "bang for your buck" knives in the market.
-A.G. Russell's one hand opening knife.

There are a lot more I'm forgetting, for sure.
Do a search by price range on any of the on-line retailers and you'll be amazed by the number of good knives available at that price.
Of course, you still need a Sebenza.

Kershaw Blur $45-55 ebay - $64 stores
Kershaw Leek $30-35 ebay - $48 stores

both great knives

I'd reccomend a Cold Steel, but it's not as classy, and certainly not an office knife.

I would highly reccomend a Queen knife (preferable in D2 steel) or an Opinel. The Opinel doesn't use as good steel, but it's a really nice knife for a cheap price, that looks class too.
The Queen is more traditional and also very nice.

If you wanted something with a clip (I HAVE to have a clip or it'll fall out of my pocket, probably in someone's car), then I reccomend a smaller Spyderco or Benchmade, very nice products.

If you need a bottle opener, or an awl, or scissors, or a screwdriver, then a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife is the perfect answer.
Very affordable and easily replaced.
And plenty of models to choose from.

But if you need a knife for cutting only, then you will probably want one with a premium blade-steel.
And if you cut things often, then you will probably want a knife that is easy to get out of your pocket and easy to open with one hand.
And that will lead you to Benchmade and Spyderco.

Benchmade has a few in your price range:

556 Mini-Griptilian or the 551 large Griptilian (maybe a little more than $50.00).
The blade-steel is 440C and Benchmade does this steel just right IMO.
And the Axis-lock is simply amazing.

But if you go with Spyderco, there are some excellent choices also:

The Delica, the Native III, and the Centofante III are all very nice cutters.
Each one has a different style of blade and handle so you will need to actually handle them to see which one you like.
They all three use VG-10 which is an excellent blade-steel.
I personaly prefer it over S30V (which is the hottest steel in the knife world right now).

Spyderco also offers the Salt 1 with H-1 blade-steel.
It is virtually rust-proof, which you might find attractive if you hang around the ocean or lakes and streams.

Good luck and happy hunting,
Allen.

Gotta echo Dr. Thor with the Ka-Bar Dozier knives. You can get two, or three if you shop around. I've seen them for $16.88. My pick is the one with the hole in the blade, although I haven't gotten my hands on the spear point version yet. AUS-8 steel, adjustable blade tension, reversible clip. Lotta knife for the coin.
