Good American Knife Companies

Marcinek: You are correct sir (or ma'am - got in trouble on another board by not acknowledging that someone may be either/or)! At least one person on the board is as geeky as me! Have you read Pattern Recognition or Spook Country? Some of Gibson's best stuff!

Thanks everyone for the steering help!

Its "sir". "Dude", "Buddy" or "Pal" also would suffice!

No, I haven't read those yet. Thanks!

NOT A GOOD AMERICAN KNIFE COMPANY- i have first hand knowledge -they stink

I am sorry (and surprised!) that some of you guys seem to have gotten grief from Queen. This flies in the face of my experience with them..big time!
(Did you ask to talk to Jenny Moore? They don't come any nicer than she is.)

As far a quality control is concerned, if that is an issue I suggest that you do business with Bill Horn at Cumberland Knife Works. Bill personally inspects the knives that he sells and those few Queens that are not "up to snuff" get a nice trip back to Titusville.

As far as sharpening is concerned, edge sharpness has been an issue at Queen for a long time. D-2 steel can be tough stuff but I have never had a problem sharpening it on ceramic and diamond hones. Older-style hones can work, too, but the process can take a while. D-2 holds an edge well, however.

we werent talking about queen-

we had bad experiences with great eastern-

and im not a big fan of bill at cumberland-he charged me for a knife once he didnt have-and he didnt tell me- i figured it out after a 3 weeks or so-

i dont like people who do that kind of stuff

I've looked at a few Great Eastern knives and was unimpressed. The fit/finish and sharpness varied significantly. I did not like their blade designs. Handles didn't feel good. Moore makers are rebadged cammilus, bear or queen and they cost more than the originals, I'd buy the original. The one unique Moore Maker is the two bladed double lockback that is patented to Cammilus (now gone) and it's still available from some dealers. Case makes a good product in both their steels and you get a large selection of patterns. Queen is a good knife and can come sharp, but with a thick edge that most feel needs resharpening and requires a coarse stone. Schatt and Morgan is a premium queen and shows the extra attention, however it has the same edge problem. Bear has real spotty fit/finish and IMHO is not worth the time or money. Buck's chinese has better steel (440C)than their US product (420hc). Fit and finish on both types of Buck is about the same, but less than Case and Queen but comparable to Bear.

I couldn't be happier with my Canal Street knives. Fit and finish is excellent, and they arrive razor sharp. Yes they use 420 steel on these, but I find that they hold a great edge, for a long time, and it doesn't take a ridiculous amount of effort to re-apply that edge. For fifty or sixty bucks, with bone handles, thay are a great value. For those who prefer a higher grade steel, the new canittlers are available in D2 and the trappers can be had in 420, 440C, or D2.

I am with Eric on Canal Street. I only own our ring knife from last year, but I do use and carry it often (can't go wrong with A2 and a good heat treat). I have handled quite a few of the other C.S. models and have always walked away impressed.

Edited to add.
Plus the cool factor: they are a start up company and they are very much trying to create a superior product. I like supporting them as well as Case, Queen, Buck.
It has been a while since I have handled a Bear slipjoint, but I was not impressed at all when I did a while back.

Is "bill at cumberland" an American knife company?

The thing I don't like about Bear is their lack of pins. I like pins.

i have a few canal streets-they are all nice-

they might be my favorite right now-cant wait to get the official blade forums knife from them-

Let's leave the rest of the editorializing about companies, purveyors and their service for the Good, Bad & Ugly or take it to PM or email. Thanks.

I have a Mooremaker Muskrat coming from Santa and I have a Robeson Barlow coming soon next week. The Robeson is made by Queen and I'm hoping it is the same quality of a Queen or Schatt & Morgan. Anyone have any new Robesons? The one I'm getting has Root Beer scales.I'm not sure from the picture how much I'll like the scales jigging.

The new Robeson's made by Queen Cutlery are very similar in quality and materials to Schatt and Morgans. Beautiful knifes, great fit and finish. I just wish they came in steels other than 420HC.

Your Moore Maker that Santa is bringing, if it has bone or horn handles, is also made by Queen, in case you didn't know. Moore Maker is my favorite Queen contract brand.

Just got my first Case CV and have to agree that the blade is really impressive.
I'd love to see Case make more patterns and finishes in CV.

BTW, the knife was very sharp right out of the box.

Sounds like Case in CV is the one for me. My problem is that I remember when they were having difficulties, before Zippo brought them back.

Before Zippo brought them back is right. Buy yourself a brand NEW Case and you'll be a happy man, guaranteed.

The Mooremaker is horn.Camillus I think made them.Figured I would get one before they are gone.

I read about the 440C in some knife rag and I think I saw it listed that way on an on-line catalog. I don't remember if the blades were marked that way or not.
