Good American Knife Companies

I never sharpen my knives to razor sharp so steel type isn't really an issue with me, although I prefer carbon over stainless just because of the appearance.Half the time the blade is used as a scraper.Sharp enough to cut, and give it a tune-up once in a while.

I am a fan of Queen knives, but if you don't want to deal with the D2 on an Arkansas stone (I wouldn't either), you can get a quality carbon steel slipjoint. I would suggest either a Case Cr-V or a Moore Maker. I am really impressed by my Moore Maker stockman. Very well made, and the blades are ground with much thinner edges than Queen puts on their D2 blades. Just be sure you get the Queen-produced Moore Maker. If it has a B after the pattern number it was made by Bear; I don't know what their quality is, but the look of the blade finish makes me wonder.

Of you could look for a buffalo horn or yellow delrin handled Moore Maker, which were made by Camillus before they went out of business.

I looked at the ones with the B at the end. Two of them were the old queen pictures. a new one was ther that looked like a Bear, with the typical lack of pins. Pocketknives need pins. They just don't look good and it looks like they cut corners to finish the knife.
Pins, I need them:eek:
I bought a Jim Serven folder once that had pins all around it.It was in Cocobola and he changed the design of the knife to an interframe.Man was I disappointed.

Could you write more pointers about Moore Maker
All delrin handles without B are Camiillus?

Who makes MooreMaker now?
Which ones are a Queen subcontract?

Thanks

Queens are the bone handled ones. All the horn handles are Camillus. Not sure about the 2 colored handled trappers. looks like queens.Someone keerect me if I'm wrong.

For the $$$ stay with Case. I have a Moore Maker (Queen) that is beautiful but the fit was not what it should have been for an $80 knife. My Moore Maker (Camillus) is ok, but to tell you the truth I carry my Bokers most often.

Seems like no one's mentioning Winchester (before I get corrected, I mean the expensive, Made in USA ones) here. granted, the knives are made by someone else...
With these more premium brands - Moore Maker, Winchester, Canal Street...is there any place to get them at a discounted price?

Smokey Mountain has good prices.Stockman delrins are Camillus I believe. On the MM website I see a couple of German ones and like someone said earlier a B on the end denotes pinless Bears.

If you can live without them being made in the US, Eye Brand or Buck Creek are nice.

I can definitely live with something not made in the USA (as long as it's not made in China or some other hostile country). In fact I have another post asking about a replacement for my lost Henckels that no one's responded to, and I recently purchased an Eye Brand medium congress. It's just that currently, the only Made in USA pocket knife I own is a small Old Timer from the mid-80's.

Bone handle Moore Makers are made by both Queen and Bear. If you compare the pictures of them, it becomes easy to tell them apart. It looks like bear does a fairly coarse job of grinding the blades and then throws them in a tumbler to round off all the corners. If you want to see the Queen made bone handle Moore Makers, go to a vendor like Cumberlandknifeworks.com, jonescutlery.com, or soonerstateknives.com.

A lot of the Moore Makers on ebay are from Bear. If the buy it now price is only $40-50, it is most likely from Bear.

I paid a premium for the Moore Maker (they cost more than Case) but I am glad I did. Mine is better quality build than either of my Case stockmans (63032 and 6375).

Yes the GEC company started out terrible, I bought 3 knives that were well terrible, bent blade chipped handles, smeared etches,....But I have bought 3 of the newer 73 pattern with a back bolster, and they are perfect, and I mean perfect. I just recently sent an e-mail about getting the first 3 straightend out,and I received an e-mail that was very nice..telling me where to send them, and leave a note in with each reminding them what is the problem, and they would gladly fix the problems...SO I will will buy more for sure, they are getting it together fast....Take care Mike
