Good Aus-8 Knives?

The CRKT M16 LE 1* and Mil 1* series are nice knifes. I have a M16-12LE and Like the flipper and design. If wearing gloves is somthing you do alot this knife will work for you. I also have a Delta Z Opsrey which I like but the funny shaped hole is not the easiest to use.

As for the Voyager series its a great knife. I've had the XL clip point for years. I perfer the plasic clip on the old ones to the newer metal (personal perference). The knife is by far the easiest in the collection to get razor sharp. Why? I have no idea. I have cheaper knives and I have much more expensive knives but the trusty old Cold Steel sharpens the best. The one thing that I like, is the fact that it is a lockback lock and not a liner lock.

A friend of mine had an XL Voyager Tanto and it cut wire, concreate board, was hammered into door jams and it was thrashed. But, the knife still locked up solid and while the serrations were just about gone I was able to get a pretty good edge back on the plain edge part of the knife. The hammer marks on the back side of the blade wouldn't come out:D

Great knife for the money

I like the Cold Steel R1 Military Classic... got one. They're nice.

The Cold Steel Big Bear looks nice too. Don't have one, but like the pictures.

Both are copies of famous makers' designs, Japanese made (good quality control)

I have severely abused a Cold Steel medium voyager-tanto point. It has always performed. I've hammered on it with a brick to split wood, hammered it's point into a pin to spread it, used it as a planting tool digging in the dirt, stabbed it into things, thrown it into the ground, and more. It always sharpens up to a razor edge and locks up tight. It's been abused for 5 years now. I smooth out bad scratches and sharp dents (e.g. from hitting the spine with a brick) out of the blade with sandpaper. The edge has never chipped or badly rolled (I use a sharpmaker at 40 degrees), although the point has dulled a little bit it's still fully serviceable. Never has it rusted and it certainly is not kept clean. As far as I'm concerned, the Voyagers live up to Lynn Thompson's hype. It may not be a wonder steel (e.g. Spyderco and their VG10) but the Cold Steel AUS8A with its heat treatment makes a great all around blade at a reasonable price.

Kershaw has a large heavy folder called Folding Field that is Aus8. I have one and one of my sons has one that he uses for skinning and quartering deer during hunting season. If a person is looking for a large folder in this steel, this is a good one.

@AUS-8 is not a good steels for cutlery regrettably because it is made by low-tech steel makin company aichi.Marchants sold it as hitachi making.Number of AUS series is over 100.
But they cannot escape the concept of ATS-34.
I hear that next new concept of cutlery steel has been developed by hitachi. So it is recomended that marchants do not purchase AUS series too much.
