Good-bye dear friend, Dog Gone

I wanted to find a video of Utah Phillips performing this himself but, unfortunately, one does not seem to exist... at least not on youtube!

This guy doesn't sing quite as well as ol Utah and his arrangement needs a little work but this song is still for everyone out there who has ever loved a good dog. And had it returned unconditionally in the way it seems only a good dog can do.

In the boxset, "Starlight On the Rails" Utah Phillips discusses each song before he sings it. For this one, he tells how it is based off a true story and how Queenie the dog waited years by the tracks (much like another famous dog tale, in Japan this time, an akita) for her master to return and was eventually adopted by the rail yard workers.

Our 14 year old Queensland Healer is old and sick with prostate problems and the vet thinks he will not make the long journey from Finland to home in Alaska as we are flying to the East Coast and driving to Alaska from there...

Not to hijack the thread but I know from my own experience how tough Heelers are ...give him the chance to be with you for as long as he can without undue pain. When the time times you both will know! :(

Sorry for the loss. It is very hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet. I had a German Shepherd-- Beau-- he was put to sleep at 11 because of hip dysplasia. That was in 1998. I still think of him frequently. Take comfort in knowing (or believing) you will some day be reunited with all of your loved ones.

Thanks for all your kind words, there's a hole in our family right now but we'll fill it with memories, like how much she loved the snow, so the last storm brought a flood of memories and because I took a lot of pics, we'll always have those to prod our memories.

A few more pics of a great friend:
