Good EDC blade for farm use

Get a Victorinox farmer. It might not impress the hell out of your friends but it will do everything you mentioned as well or much better than any tank-like tactical folder, and it will last a lifetime because instead of abusing your blade to dig or pry you can use the reamer or screwdriver blade which are made for such things. A leatherman would be even better. On a side note holes > studs and the Endura has an extremely robust tip. If you're looking for a 1 hand opening knife with a strong tip the Endura 4 can't be beat for the price. The farmer can be found for under $30 online, and the Endura will run $45-50.

Get a hoof pick (your horse will appreciate it) and a small fixed blade for the other.

If you can live with the recurve go ZT 0200. I don't want to say that they have a no questions asked warranty, but it is pretty good. The warranty on the JYD is great too. I guess what I am driving at is....you probably need a knife with a pretty good warranty.:D

If you have something in the Kershaw family and you break it.... send it in. They might say no to you, but I suspect it would take a pretty extreme case. They take extra special care of you with the ZT line. The ZTs are working TOOLS for working folks.

On the Benchmade side of things, I'd recommend the 14205. It's not overly beefy like the ZT0200, but the blade is almost as thick, it's still pretty sturdy, carries nicely, and the Axis lock is a lot of fun. If you get that knife I can pretty well guarantee you won't use the thunbstuds very often.
I'm sure you could find a Griptillian to fit your needs as well, and at a very reasonable cost.

Overall my top two pics would be the Kershaw ZT0200 and the Benchmade 14205. They're pretty different knives, but either one would do the job well.
....I just bought a 14205, and am VERY impressed; it's beefy as all get out and the fit and finishing is outstanding. This knife will take a beating.

I also think you should look hard at the Spyderco Endura......Spyderco knows how to make a knife that works !

RAT RC-3 the magic word prying was used. i dont really think theres a good folding knife thats economical that will really stand up to hard use. a RC-3 will stand up to alot of stuff and is still quite easy to carry espeacially with a sharpshooter leather sheath :D

I will second the Ka-Bar Mule and also suggest the new Ka-Bar Dozier Bobcat. These knives seem to be designed for abuse.

I recommend a Benchmade Mini Grip or full size Grip. No nonsense, tough and ergonomic knives that are easy to use and ultimate in practicality.Buy a yellow handled one and you won't lose it even if you drop it...

SAK Farmer is a noble multitool knife that's an excellently made multi tasker.

I agree with a previous poster's idea of a Queen Mountain Man lockback but an even BETTER suggestion for a Traditional style knife would be Great Eastern Cutlery's No.73 Liner Lock in various bone handles with a very good easy to sharpen carbon blade, looks really good too and finely made US product.About 3.75" closed, the No.23 version is the same but bigger (and it's quite a monster)4.25 " closed but rugged...Great Eastern also make Harness Jacks with one large blade and a useful punch blade for spiking or poking stuff. Not locking though.

Benchmade 950 (rift), 525(presidio), 551(griptilian), or HK (made by benchmade) 14205. just my 2 cents though

If you really won't go for a Spyderco Endura4, I guess that a Benchmade tanto Griptilian would do the trick.

If you decide you can live with hole rather than thumbstud opening, consider the Victorinox One-Hand Trekker. Similar tool-set to the Farmer, but with a larger one-hand opening, locking (serrated) blade.

How about a Kershaw Lahar. 3.5" VG-10 blade, G-10 scales, solid liner lock. I have it, I love it, and it is built for hard use.

kneedeep has a great review with pics of it here.

And it's $60 at most places and $52 here. This knife should be twice that!

UpChUcK, you may want to edit out the last line of your post. It is known as 'deal spotting' and is a forum no-no.

A lot of dealers pay a considerable amount of money to use/advertise on this forum. Giving free advertising to companies that don't support the forum is bad form.

Not only that, but if deal spotting was allowed, we would soon be up to our eyeballs with unsolicited 'deals'.

Wow, you guys are really impressive and quick to respond to the new guys ignorance, I appreciate it alot I think Ill get a benchmade after all, Ive been wanting to try one for its quality and apparently supurb lock up, it sounds to me that they are the surefire of knives, outstanding warranty (right?) and theyll sharpen your blade for you if you mess it up...sounds nice to me

Now I gotta go sell a flashlight to fund this new purchase =D again thanks for all the suggestions (and please do keep em comming)
