Well, since i live very close to and travel quite often to and around NYC, i feel that i need to change my carry knife due to recent "crack-downs" and application of "gravity knife" to damn near all folders that lock. i don't want this to turn into a debate thread over laws but, i would like some recommendations for a good EDC slip joint. im after something similar to the spyderco ukpk but want to see what else is out there. im not into traditional slippies as edc blades. so, heres the criteria:
-4" blade or less (preferably)
-can't look too "threatenning" but i still want a good/cool looking knife
-really important!!!-CAN'T be flicked open by swinging your wrist/hand!!! so, a slippie with a nice strong detent.
-price limit: $70
-good steel (not 440a or similar)
thanks in avance and any pics would be appreciated.
UPDATE: i found two knives well below my price point that seem pretty good: CRKT SLIP K.I.S.S. (the full size version) and the spyderco kiwi 3 slipjoint. does anyone have any experience with either one? i really like the kiwi 3 but theres not much info on it.

I personally did not risk anything more than a SAK in NYC whenever I had to go there. They'll look for clips and try to get you for it regardless of whether they can flip it open or not.

case, schrade oldies are nice 1095.. you should post a question in the traditional folders forum here.. they'll set you up.. I have puma, case, and schrade all old though, I'm not up on the new stuff i like pre-70 if I can.. check out @bay...

I would seriously look into the Spyderco UKPK in FRN. They're about $40 and they're really awesome. The FRN is grippy, the clip allows for invisible carry, the stone washed blade is smooth and silky. It's sharp. And It's very comfortable. The thing weighs nothing.

And at $40, if it's lost or confiscated, you haven't lost much. That said, it feels like a much more expensive knife.

case sodbuster or opiniel are decent without looking completely traditional.

PS. I would advise against using a pocket clip, a kid a couple years ago asked on here some questions in the law section after an officer saw his clip and arrested him for illegal carry. From what I remember he was found guilty and got into big trouble and and threatened the career he was studying at college.

sure the laws regarding buying in nyc may be turning in the wrong direction but all of this speculation about cops looking for pocket clips is ridiculous. i only lived there for 4 years but i have to say, if there could ever be a city where cops don't spend their days looking for inconsequential garbage to harass people over, it is nyc. i grew up in a rural town where cops are dying to mess with everybody over anything. same every time i go back. cops looking for pocket clips in nyc? give me a break. there are actual problems to consider there. carry a sweet, gentleman-like slippy and impress whoever needs the tags cut off their fancy pants.:thumbup:

obviously some must pay attention if members on here are being arrested or fined over it? I dont doubt your assessment of NYC cops, but the unlucky few are remembered before the ones who didnt have any issues. :)

I EDC a Benchmade Benchmite along with a SAK and a Leatherman in NYC

no way would i ever have a clip showing - why go looking for trouble?

Single blade only? Or multi-blade/tool? Of course, there's the obvious Swiss Army Knife options. Apart from an old school bone or wood handled traditional slipjoint like your grandpappy carried, nothing says "non-threatening" or "innocuous" like a good ol' red handled SAK. If you're looking for a single-blade slipjoint, even something with a fairly long blade, you've got any number of choices between Queen, Case, Buck, Boker, Puma, Laguiole, etc. Even some of the nicer ones with wood/bone/horn/antler handles can be had for under your $70 limit.

thanks for the replies. i am well aware of the pocket clip issue and have removed the clips off of all my carry knives so i don't draw attention to myself. also, i'd like something that looks "modern" ...not a SAK or traditional folder, i have plenty of those to choose from already. if its going to be my edc, i want it to be slightly more capable. So far, it seems like the UKPK is the only option for what im after. anyone else know of anything similar?

i'd like a single blade. i have plenty of saks, sd's cadets etc...im just after something with a more modern look/feel. if i have to stick to traditionally styled folders, i'd like something with a thicker blade.

go with a yellow small sodbuster of some type-stay away from knives with clips, black in color, thumb opening devices, and militant names. If a policeman tries to confiscate your blade , tell him he can have it. I have told a police that the knife was a fathers day gift and they gave it back to me. If you show respect to the police officer no matter how they act ,right or wrong, they USUALLY respect you and don't give you any problem.

my bad for sidetracking. any excuse to buy a new knife is good to me :p

my vote goes to GEC 73. good sized blades, classic look, stout half stops, and overall excellent feel in hand.

I know you don't want to take a SAK, but the Victorinox Alox Cadet would be my first choice.

A few remarks: most Opinels are strictly speaking locking folders (the locking ring). The Spyderco DK Penknife cannot be opened with one hand, so is a safe but expensive choice.
