Good EDC Slippie?

I was thinking of the Fällkniven U2, but that is locking and probably a bit more expensive. You could try finding it second hand.

Have you considered the Spyderco Urban? It might take up a little less pocket space than the UKPK. Those two or the Case sodbuster Jr. in carbon steel would be my three top picks for a single blade knife.
The thing with that Boker or even the spydercos if you wanted to nitpick, you could probably gravity open them by grabbing the blade and dropping the handle. The Sodbuster Jr. probably would be less likely but I could be wrong on all that, just guessing.

i have considered the urban. and basically all of spydercos slippies. the only thing is, i like the beefier look/build of the boker. the way cops here generally test "gravity knives" is by holding the handle then swinging their arm down hard and abruptly pulling back up to see if the blade pops out. if i were to come across an officer who "spydie drops" my knife, im screwed unless the knife is relatively small.

:D Yeah, I know, just making sure you've thought of it. Don't forget, the Sypderco UKPK lightweights are coming out. I'm waiting for the leaf blade UKPK lightweight to debut.

haha yes im aware. i'll probably get one of the leaf blades as well. but i'm looking for something to carry until its released. i can't keep taking chances with my regular blades. and thank you for the relative replies :D any chance you know where i may be able to find a DKPK? its seems like my best bet so far. its on my list until someone recommends anything different.

I wouldn't know about the DKPK, they're not near as common.

What about the Spyderco Grashopper or the Vic Compact?

The Compact includes a small but good pen and scissors.
The Grashopper is a Three-Finger-Knife without a lock.

The leaf blade UKPK Lightweights are out. along with the drop points. I have a maroon drop point right next to me!

is nobody reading my first post and those after? i am looking for a MODERN SLIPJOINT. i have saks and they are not adequate a my only edc blade. i want something beefier and made with higher quality steels/ materials. an opinel is a 100 yr old design...not modern in anyway. nobody knows of any?

Not many companies make such things, and your price limit pretty much rules out a custom. The Spyderco UKPK and Urban have been mentioned, and they also make the Terzoula and byrd Wings Slipit... that's probably the largest selection of slipjoints with modern one-handed-opening styling that any company makes. Lots of companies make very nice traditional slipjoints. Modern? You're not going to be able to find many options.

Are you not reading all the replies? Spyderco Slip it line. UKPK, Urban.

"Modern Slip Joints" arent a real big market. Your options are limited, you need to understand that.

The only other thing I can think of is to commission a custom maker. Good luck.

i am reading the replies and acknowledge the fact that my options are limited. however, i feel that if i can find out about little known knives in a small market as you said, it'd be here. i am just accentuating the point of what i want so i don't keep getting the same suggestions.

What about the Kiwi 3 you mentioned in your OP? It's a classic design and the price point (for now) is way below what you listed. Or you could just avoid NYC all together. Kidding

well its a classic spyderco design...not like a trapper or stockman pattern...not after those. i think thats what im going to go with. i was also considering the avoidance option as well.:D do you have one?

i'd like something that looks "modern" ...not a SAK or traditional folder,
Possibly a little too "traditional" for your tastes, but may I suggest a Case Rough Black Slimline Trapper. The shape is traditional but I feel the black handles (G10, I think) and the silver coloured blades have a very modern look.
108mm closed (4¼"), 82mm blade (3¼").
Alternatively, check out the BOKER PLUS EXSKELI MOOR I. I think it has a clean, modern look.

The Spyderco DK Penknife cannot be opened with one hand, so is a safe but expensive choice.

are you positive? They are extremely shady in NYC, and will flick knives open by holding the blade, as near the tip as possible, and flicking the handle out.

I've never handled a UKPK/DKPK so I don't know how stiff they are, but it's very possible that they can be flicked open this way if there is not enough resistance.

I'd bet that they can't, but I have no idea how stiff the slipjoints on these modern spydies are.

Any of the traditional styles will serve you well. I'm partial to the copperhead, toothpick and trapper. My preference is Case with stag and CV steel. Very nice knives, and there's something calming about a traditional slip joint.
