Hey, I am looking for a folding knife under 100$ from Ebay that will be good for EDC and for wilderness/survival or just sitting in the camp and carve some wood, I searched for a while and I just got confused from all those knifes.

I had: "Schrade SCHA7B" and "Izula 2", I liked the SCHA7 shape and look but the knife itself was not that good.

Any suggestions? thanks

Look at the exchange here sometimes you can find a ZT350, ZT566, or Spyderco Manix 2.

My favorite sub $100 knife right now is this HK 14715 made by benchmade. It has a 3.5" D2 Blade, weighs less than 5oz, Axis lock, and fairly beefy (.146") blade stock. This photo is from GP Knives they stock this model...

The Spyderco Native 5 is always a very good choice. Of course, it is hard to beat a Victorinox swiss army knife for their utility in the woods and out.

that one looks really good!
my exertion now is between the HK 14715, Manix 2 and K2, and Native 5
which one do you recommand?
edit: and Benchmade Griptilian
The last thing that I need in a knife is tactical ability

I never saw a K2 for under $100 so if your budget is strict you can forget about k2.

I've owned the Griptilian, Manix 2, and Native as well as the HK Axis. I like the Axis the best but they are all great knives. The spyderco knives are better slicers but have thinner blades with more delicate tips than the Axis. So does the Griptilian, plus it's got plastic handles with 3/4" liners and smaller pivot than the Axis so I feel you don't get as much value there.

You can't go wrong with any of them, really you can't. They all have fans on this forum and could fill your needs. You would probably be happiest with the one you think looks the best, lol

oh lol I didn't saw the price 0_0

should I go with the HK 14715? I really like the design and I looking for more of a "heavy duty" knife and not tactical, HK 14715 or Manix2? thanks!

Maybe these photos will help. I no longer have any spydercos or benchmade knives but here is a comparison to some other heavy use knives that cost at least twice what the Axis does. It fits right in with them in my collection and I have as much trust or more in it than these others as far as reliability of lock and overall strength of construction. It's also nice that is has milled out liners and is the lightest of these 3 knives and has the most compact size closed, with same cutting edge length. (FYI my Axis has a contego low rider clip not the stock clip.)

Thank you very much, I think and I'll go with the Axis :)

Or for a little more, the same knife in D2 steel, once they get them back in stock.

Just about perfect for EDC, plus outdoors work. High visibility if dropped, open frame design makes it easy to clean out, flat ground drop point blade is a great "jack of all trades" profile.

Manix 2 would be a good option (I dont own other knives mentioned so I cannot comment on them). Another choice could be Cold Steel folders like Recon 1 large.

I would suggest you first try to learn about blade grind geometry, how it affects performance, and how relates to the type of use you want to help narrow the mass of options available.

Otherwise, it will be a long expensive journey. Not because any one knife may be expensive, but because many fall prey to the crow syndrome; of always looking for a new shinny object to chase/acquire (searching for something new without an understanding of where you have come from or where you should be headed - from a performance perspective).

You should be able to satisfy your initial references with a quality performance based knife for well under $50, perhaps under $25 even. In this way you could for example buy/try two knives with significantly differing blade-grind geometry and learn how they can affect performance of various tasks.

Spend/budget out of your investment for a sharpening system that will allow for repeatable results and learn how to sharpen and also to adjust the cutting edge bevels.

Here is a pic. illustrating a few common blade grind geometry as reference example. Additionally, the Saber grind is very common (somewhat of a Scandi as illustrated below, plus a Secondary bevel applied to the cutting edge similar to how the Flat grind is shown).

Truth be told ..., I will admit the first knife that came to mind for me, based on what you mentioned in your OP, I the Cold Steel Finn Wolf. It is however a Scandi grind, and my guess would be that many do not appreciate what a Scandi brings in terms of performance. I come from a history of working with wood (chisels, etc.) and sharpening all my tools personally (includes worm drive saw blades and carpentry saws) on a daily basis (jobsites with files & stones).

Regards,

The Axis is awesome.

Dollar for dollar, one of the best knives I've ever owned.

While not my personal choice for the OP, I'd get one of these of all other options, mainly because it's being discontinued for 2017 and won't ever be available new again. That way, it might increase its value, if you don't like it, or it might be your preferred folder and you will then get some backups for it before it finally disappears...

Can you say more about what kind of camping you do?

For general backpacking where I am relying on a camp stove (99% of the time), my primary use for a folding knife is for food prep. I prefer something with blade in the 3"-3.5" range and a broad tip and good belly for spreading peanut butter. Pretty much any knife will make shavings so grind isn't make or break. I generally recommend that people get several inexpensive knives with different grinds to learn their preferences. But I wouldn't worry about it too much. Pick a knife that you think looks cool and that is comfortable in the hand. I also highly recommend a small multi-tool like the Leatherman Squirt or Gerber Dime, as they are great for making field repairs.

For car camping or backpacking where I plan on making a fire, I carry a small folding saw (e.g. Silky, Opinel) and a fixed blade with a blade in the 4"-5" range. I'd recommend either the Mora Companion or Mora 2000 as good first knives.
