Recommendation? Good first Busse for camp/outdoors tasks?

if both sr101 and res-c are on the table then you can pick up a 711 pretty reasonably as well.

I know I like G10 and micarta, but I've never handled Res-C. I've owned knives with rubber (or rubber-analog, I guess) handles before and didn't like them, but I'm not totally ruling out Res-C.

Don't forget the Ratweiler. They were recently available in INFI and won't break the bank.

BTW, if you happen to be in the Portland/Vancouver area, keep an eye out for the Hog, Dog and Rat Mischief. It's a get together in the woods in August and besides being a good time with cool people, it would give you an opportunity to see, handle, AND USE:thumbsup: a lot of different blades in one place. That type of hands on experience might be helpful in finding the right blade for you, especially if you're on a budget and only want 10:D(nobody has just one;)) instead of 50+o_O like some of these Hogs around here:eek:

I really love TG in A2 - it’s just one sweet blade! And A2 is very good stuff, no worries about that.

But my favorite general outdoor knife is CG FBM. It is the best chopping/cutting monster I’ve ever had. Maybe it’s quite long blade, though still compact enough for my needs. CG FBM will never fail! This knife is one of the best Busse designs ever IMHO.

Now that sounds fun! I'm in Seattle, but it's not so far away as to rule it out!

BME2 is my favorite "camp" knife.

I have the TGSE, DS8, and B8LE as well and they're great too, (especially the latter two if weight is a factor,) but the Ergo handle is my favorite and the BME strikes a nice balance in terms of length and weight for me overall. Big enough at ~9.5" to really chop well, but light enough to not wear you out. Great balance in the choil grip to make it handle like a smaller blade if needed.

NMSFNO will feel huge the first time you hold it and then you will love it. When I bought NMSFNO and BWMLE at the same time early on, I thoght knives could not get any bigger. That changed very quickly! I cannot say enough about NMSFNO! If you can get hand shaped micarta, or micarta period and sand it down yourself, thats the best way for a NMSFNO in my opinion, although the regular mag micarta works great too!

I just cant stand straight "no contour on the to spine of handle" blades for chopping like say a machete, the battlesaw or ash vs the fusion handle on say the fbm. After awhile you feel like your banging a steel pipe aganst a log... it gets sore.

The sfnos have a nice hand filling contour to them and so does the Gemini line. But if you go straight the res-c is pretty damn good

Well Dadpool, you have discovered two things. Many choices in the Bussekin family to choose from. And as I found out when I was new here and bewildered by all of those offerings. There are many great folks here in this “cult” that will share their knowledge on the “Beatles” of fixed blade knifeology. If you knew me, that would be my highest compliment on quality, and number of “hits.” No one does it better.

PS. Being in Seattle, with a fairly large population, you may be able to get together with someone who would allow you to actually handle some Bussekins. Sure you will be contacted shortly regarding this as there are many to experience first hand. And a warning. Whatever you do, please do not wander into the Chris Reeve sector of Bladeforums. I consider CRK the Busse’s of folding knives. You have been warned, my compatriot. ☠️

ASH2 is a nice knife that does it all.

Bought my first NMSFNO from this guy. He knows what he’s talking about.

Probably my second choice as a starter for a large camp knife. NMFSH is pretty amazing if you want to go with some thicker bacon. And the NMFSHs clean up sooooo nice if you want a stripper.

Other strong contenders in this class would include the 2G Battle Mistress ergo or 2G Steel Heart ergo.

At the cheaper and smaller end of the spectrum, how would something like a Ratmandu compare to the larger knives folks have been suggesting? Smaller and lighter, but not exactly small, and I guess not much for chopping -- but solid for batoning and wood processing?

I totally agree with StealthCaliber on this. I had an ASH2 and got rid of it for this exact reason. It was an awesome blade, but wore my hand out after chopping for a while. The fusion and ergo handles are much nicer IMHO. You really can't go wrong with an SFNO, it's one of my all time favorites (along with about a dozen others) Another great blade that hasn't been mentioned is the SHE, SHE2
