Good general purpose knife for a 14 year old?

When I was around that age, my dad took me to get my first hunting rifle. I can still remember the experience of going to pick out the gun of MY choosing. Makes you feel more grown up to start making your own choices.

This is a good point. I don't have my first knife anymore, but I do have the first knife that I got to pick out for myself (Swisschamp from the mid to late '90s)

My recommendation is the Benchmade Mini Griptilian or a Spyderco Delica. These are 2 of my all time favorites. Unless you are Grandpa moneybags, then I would steer you towards a mini sebenza (which has replaced my mini griptilian as my default EDC). Any of these is a lifetime knife.

Great suggestions so far, Mora, Kershaw, Spyderco. Look at the Buck Vantage series as well, definitely worth consideration. Look at the Kershaw Skyline or Blur.

Spyderco Salt 1 or Dragonfly in H1.
The nearly rust-proof blade will stand against whatever he subjects it to (mud, leaving it outside, swimming with it in his trunks) because he may be careful, but he is a 14 year old! :p Plus the sizes are good for EDC, and the yellow handles are easy to spot and make them look less like "weapons."

izula.jpg Well my son is 14 and come summer time hes in shorts, T shirt, and flip flops we spend a lot of time at the trailer, going fishing doing some hiking etc. etc. and carrying a folding knife in his pocket didn't always work out so i tried a neck knife ( venom green Esee Izula ) He loves it ...I ordered the orange paracord and he wrapped it himself...

I'd go with something from kershaw. Decent quaility, wont break the bank, and it will hold up well. Buy him a decent combo stone to go with it.

Hi, I am a fifteen year old. Go with something like a benchmade grip or mini grip, they look awesome and by all accounts they're good quality.

Get him a good SAK if he doesn't have one. Every boy needs a good swiss army knife, and they're cheap enough that you could get him one and a good standalone folder and not break the bank. I'd probably say a more sturdy Kershaw. I love the look of the leek but the tip is so thin I'd be afraid he would snap it, especially if he uses it outside. Maybe something like a Cryo 2 or a Thermite. I wouldn't want him to lose a $100 Benchmade or anything, but you're the one who knows how responsible he is.

Mora or swiss army knife, all these people recommending these nice knives gotta realize kids loose stuff.

I still have all my knives from that age, as well as my original SAK I got when I was 4.

If he's truly into his knife, he's not going to lose it. Especially with a pocket clip.

A fixed blade like an Izula, or better yet, the smaller Candiru, could make a good choice. They are quite tough and not traditional looking.

Man, it's been like forever since I posted here!!!

I sort of lost track of things in the knife world the past 10/12 years.
My grandson's 14th birthday is coming up soon and I want to get him a decent general purpose EDC type of knife.

He's already got a couple of my old Schrade knives. I have a NIB folding Buck I bought probably 20 years ago and never used.

I'm afraid they might be more "old man type" knives though.
He's more interested in the artsy fantasy type.

I would not spend a lot of money for a knife for a 14 year old. Cabelas (and other dealers) sell a very useful multitool which includes a knife. Cost is reasonable ($6.00) and usefulness is high.

Good choice with the swiss army knife. I can't see a 14 year old walking around flipping a knife all day. Swiss army much more useful for chores etc.
