Good general purpose knife for a 14 year old?

I don't know your budget, but if you get him a Benchmade 943 Osborne, he will save up to buy a replacement if it is lost or stolen.

Budget??? I cant believe I am the first to ask
About $50 - give or take.

He and my son are living with my son's girlfriend of a year and a half. She just bought a new house last October and they moved in with her.
I'd budget more but - I'm afraid they might break up and my son would just up and leave and leave everything behind.

He's done that a few times already - just walked out with the clothes on their backs and left everything behind.

This knife depending on the cost - may be a "grandma & grandpa house knife" - that he can use whenever he comes to visit.

When I was around that age, my dad took me to get my first hunting rifle. I can still remember the experience of going to pick out the gun of MY choosing. Makes you feel more grown up to start making your own choices.

Great suggestion!

Hal, include your grandson in the entire process;from discussing the budget to online browsing. Then find a local Brick & Mortar shop that has it in stock, go down together and buy the knife. Make it an event. Guaranteed that, no matter what becomes of the knife itself, he'll always remember the time he and Gramps bought a new knife...

Good luck! :)

Hmm, that's an interesting variable. Can we get some more background on the boy? Smart or average intelligence? Outgoing or shy? Indoors or outdoors? Urban or rural? Does he build things (or blow things up) or is he more into video games?

This would be helpful- for example, if he likes to build stuff, a LM Squirt would be great. If you're in the sticks, some type of sturdy, woods going blade. If he's indoors all the time, and not really cutting much, then the best bet is a knife that's fun to open and close (assisted or axis.)

Give us a bit more of a rundown, we'll pin down some options, and then you can look at them with him and let him choose. If you just take him to a knife shop or an online store, it's extremely easy to become overwhelmed - the knife stores in my area have at least 300+ models, and online, thousands.

Indoors type - shy - doesn't really care to blow thing up - above average smarts - suburbs.

He has his knife chip from scouts where they covered all the basics of safety. Some good, most bad & some pure idiocy - such as fixed blades being more dangerous than a folder.<--I ranted and raved over that for a month!

So far he has a couple of my old Schrades, a machete my wife gave him when they were clearing some weeds, a couple of small lock backs - which I can't remember the exact brand, and his pride and joy is am Iron Reaver finger knife his grandmother (my wife) bought him for Christmas and a set of throwing knives. I don't believe he throws them though - he just wanted them to have them, which is fine.
I'm not so sure he'd like an assisted opener.
He's not all that interested in autos.

Taking him to the store is an excellent idea!
That's so obvious I should have thought of it!

The Cryo is a great EDC for those with smaller hands and carries very discreetly. Can't go wrong with the Delica obviously either.

Hal, I would get him a lock back for safety. Something small enough to fit in his pocket without being to bulky. You ask a hundred people and you will surely get a hundred different answers. I got my son a canal St Cutlery knife. Extremely well made. Also made right here in the US. Good luck.

Took the words right outta my mouth. Spyderco Salt I.

Kershaw Skyline
Spyderco Salt 1
Victorniox Farmer
Ontario Rat 1
Ontario Rat 2
Spyderco Delica
Buck 110

There are so many to list but there is a few.
Personally I would get him a Buck 110

A Buck 110 is a good knife. I have one that's never been used as a matter of fact!
I bought it along with a bunch of other knives from a store that was closing a good 20 years ago.
