I have realized how crucial a good headlamp is, what ones do you guys recommend? I have owned a couple of cheap ones and am ready to get a quality one, budget say around 70 bucks? If you know a good bargain though, let me know, by all means.;):)

I use the Petzl Tikka XP. It is a great little headlamp, well under your budget.

Petzl make good ones, remember you want a LED one.

The other thing to note is where the battery pack lies, if it lies on the back of the head then its good for most things except, lying on you back, i.e. reading book, fixing something under the car, whereas if its in the front then its better for this but hold less batteries, some have the ability to go either on the back of the head or in a spare battery pack on your belt or bag...but start to get expensive.

Go the distance and get the best all round lamp (for the money) out there I have found.

Princeton Tec APex. Dont take my word for it go to candlepower forums and look it up.

I had about 6 different brands and I just couldn't deal with that band around my head.. They gave me a headache something awful.. I finally went with one of the cap lights that you clip on the bill of your hat.. Works great for what I need.. I still have the headlamps but I use them for on my arms or hand if I need it...

Best of luck to you in your search..

I have 2 Zebralights (H60 & H30) and have been very happy with them. If you want one that runs on AA, I have heard good things about the H501 as well.

Found a hat with a set of LED's built into the brim. 3 bright white, 2 low intensity green. You can switch between them or turn them all on at once.

It is really light and the batteries last forever. I use it for setting decoys, getting into my treestand and general camping chores.

Zebralight!

I have a Black Diamond Icon that I like a lot, and an old Petzl Tikka (just on/off, one setting; simple) that gets the most use of all.

Lately, I've been using my Nitecore Smart PD D10 in an old MiniMaglite elastic headband. On a camping trip, it can serve as a flashlight and a headlamp that way.

Stay sharp,

Ditto! Thought I would get a Zebralight, then realized my Nitecore D10 works great in a Nite-ize headband!!
I have a Petzl Tikka Plus for most other things too!

I like the look of Surefire's SAINT headlamp, but that's a bit out of your budget.

I have had an excellent time with my Petzl Tikka XP.

Liam, opinions are like elbows...everyone got one...I guess I do too. I'll share mine based upon what I do professionally - which requires I use a headlamp almost daily as well as in my recreational activites which are almost always woods/wild related.

As part of my business we sell headlamps (no not a sales pitch just a few insights). We only sell what we use ourselves in the nature of our work. Anyway, after going thru many-many hours on field excursions in various extreme weather and atmospheric conditions, plus training and attending wild classes, and other sundry trips using headlamps...and we have one staff member who tests gear for Petzel we now only sell the Petzel Tac Tikka Plus. It is used by the US Army Rangers in the sand box for their missions. They do some really cool things with these lamps for night ops LZ deployment. Rugged, durable, lightweight relative to functionality. This is a mighty fine hard core, battle proven, tough environment headlamp that would serve you well.

HOWEVER, because we're constantly testing new gear we've chosen to now start to phase out the Tac Tikka's (even tho their awesome headlamps) and now are exclusively stocking the Princeton Tec Quad Tactical Headlamp. I'm now slowly converting over to them exclusively for my own household...here's why we only sell them and really think they're the "thing!" They are built to rugged Mil Spec standards (bombproof), are H20 proof down to 1 meter for 30 minutes, will run on alkaline, Lithium, and rechargeable AAA batts. The battery compartment is secured with a thumb screw that can be tightened by hand and also with a screwdriver that is built in and attached to the headband (nice feature). The lamp has four regulated LED lamps with a low, med, bright, and flasher and has the RED cover for night sight preservation. The lamp rotates a full 90 degrees so you can work with your hands up close and not have to contort your head to adjust the light. The best part is it is a Regulated which means as the batteries begin to die the lamp does not get dimmer like traditional lighting but rather maintains the same brightness as the batteries loose their strength.

I only buy hardcore, bombproof gear for the business and for myself...but everyone has a different purpose and mission. For our business and my lifestyle this is the way to go until something better comes along. The Petzel is going to cost a bit more whereas the PT Quad Tactical is a bargain and very affordable!

Been through several headlamps, but have to agree with a few others that the Petzl Tikka XP is the keeper of the bunch. Runs on 3 AAA, so it isn't light weight, but it puts out a fairly strong beam. I also like AAA because they're easy to replace. I also carry a mini-maglite that takes AAA...like to keep all my battery powered equipment using the same type of battery.
