Good headlamp?

Hey Guys...

Anout 2 Thumbs up for the Zebra lights..

Rick Marchand and I are both using the AA Zebra headlamps...

However I prefer to wear the band as a dog collar which works Great...
We've also started carrying them in custom Concealex rigs on a Mercharness which is also one of my favorite ways to carry..

Awesome lights for sure

I got a Petzl E-lite as a backup, but it is so good I use it as a primary light a lot.

Me too. I find the e+lite perfect for my needs. The red light is bright enough for me to use for night hiking, and I rarely ever use anything higher than the lowest white LED setting around camp. It's teeny-tiny, so it is easy to pack. It takes 2 coin cell batteries, which are each the size of a quarter, making spare battery packing super easy, too. It can be worn with the headband, or with a clip.

I find it the perfect camp task lighting solution for me. As far as micro headlamps go, the e+lite is tough to beat.

The only thing the e+lite doesn't do is distance. If you use distance lighting a lot when you camp, this lamp won't cut it for you. But paired with a nice little flashlight, and one is good to go.

I have read good things about the Princeton Tec Apex. I have also read many good things about the Petzl Tikka XP.

I'm finally up on the internet where I can view the pictures!

I've used several and the Zebra lights are by fare the simplest, most rugged and versitile LED headlamps I've used and I've been using the heck out of my CR123 and AA versions here in Afghanistan. I'm using the CR123 version the most (batteries are free:p) and it's been on a few trips. I probably use them a least a few hours a day...early in the morning and at night. I often find myself navigating FOB's (some, very unfamilar) at night or the wee-hours of the morning. The Zebra stays around my neck for those ventures and really come in handy.

I found one of those cheap ones that clip on your hat at a gas station. I have run wire in three attics using that thing.

I've been considering a good HL too for a while now. Great thread with great info. It is really going to help me in my purchase.

I tell ya what though, for minor lighting needs up close, I've been pretty darned impressed with the $4.00 SO-LED's from County Comm believe it or not. The little clip holds tight and it rotates. I clip it to a ball cap for skinning bullfrogs at the end of the evening or for changing oil in my truck. It's a pretty spartan, cheap light, and it can't compete with a high-end HL, but I can't deny the usefulness of the crazy thing.

to be honest I bought a cheap Energizer LED headlamp from walmart and its brighter and has a better throw than my roommates lowerend petzl.

Go the distance and get the best all round lamp (for the money) out there I have found.

Princeton Tec APex. Dont take my word for it go to candlepower forums and look it up.

Skam

2nd on the Princeton Tec Apex & in you price range!

I have had one a couple of years now, and it is awesome. It works for a wide range of applications; both the 5mm LEDS and the single large one have low and high settings. It is the one piece of gear I never rotate around, it is always with me, on the water or in the woods.

I've had my Petzl Tactikka XP Adapt for over a year now and I recommend it. It's pretty lightweight, water resistant, has the useful features you like without anything you won't use, and it's comfortable. Right around your price point as well :)

I agree. Best headlamp I've ever had. Cheap, good for batteries, LED, has red for preserving nightvision... and you won't have any trouble finding batteries!

I use the Petzl Tikka XP. It is a great little headlamp, well under your budget.

This is the one I have too, haven't used it very much yet, but my research and budget led me to it . Planning on trying out Zebra's and others later.

Wow, never expected so many responses so fast, thanks guys. :)
Lots of options to consider, better check out candlepower forums!

I am thinking the PT Eos (no separate battery pack, I like that) and the petzl tikka xp, both are in the latest Mountain Equipment Coop magazine, I was going to order some stuff anyway.

I've been using Black Diamond Moonlights(no longer made) but recently bought one of those. I like it. It has a much brighter and better spotlight than the Moonlight but then it has the light diffuser too which is great. Also the single band w/o a band over the top (which the Moonlight has) goes better around a hat.

I will also recommend the Princeton Tec Apex. I have had about every company and different model on the market. The Apex is the one I always come back to and use. Very bright and very versatile.

Ya, I like mine a lot and I have several different models/manufacturers to compare it to. Always searching for the ultimate headlamp :D One of those things that I would buy again.

I like the Petzl MYO XP

Don't know how much they are over there though.

Kind regards
Mick

I have too many headlights and this is the one I keep taking camping now. This is an excellent light. Great low power and high power settings. My backup or light kit bag consists of the petzl e-lite also. Another great little light. My criteria for my primary light is that it uses AA batteries so I can keep my battery count down. I am less concerned with the e-lites batteries because its my backup and can use very little power.

I have taktikka XP (the one with colored lenses) and am quite happy with it. It is well though for light weight compact design. The wide angle sliding lens is very practical. I've seen they are updating the tikka line. I did have some better headlamps in terms of raw performance but I stopped using them because they were bulkier and not half as useful.

Those zebralights are pretty cool. I like the 1AA lights for less weight and easy to find batteries.
