Good Knife ?

Gerber does not have the best reputation here. Looked at your link to see what you are carrying and how much you paid. Tried for similar. Cost of both recommendations is a bit higher than the Gerber (all goods worth price charged. Buy cheap = get cheap")

I think you might do well with a Becker Knife and Tool Crewman. It is not stainless, but will hold up well to harsh work.

If you want stainless, you might look at a Benchmade Rant. It comes in either N690 or 440C (they seem to be in transition). Both steels are good. Has about a 4" blade.

There are alot of options outthere for you. To help arrowit down, please provide any or all of the following preference info:

-Price range.
-Knife type. I'm assuming you're looking for a fixed blade, but if you're willing to consider other types (folder, multitool, other), please let us know.
-blade and overall knife length?
-steel preferences?
-Sheath material preferences?
-handle preferences?
-What type of tasks will you be doing?
-Anything else?

I have the Becker Crewman as my heavy duty camp knife. It is robust enough to filet a Buick, but is remarkably sharp for such a thick blade. Well worth the fifty or so bucks it cost. The only downsides are that the sheath is cumbersome and the knife has an ugly, uber-military look to it.

-60-120$
-Fixed Blade
-4"+
-Black Powder Coated ? But That's just a preference
-Plastic (Tactical Sheath) or Leather.
-Camping, I would also like a tactical/survival knife
-I'm a bit of a collector, I like to have rare or nice stuff

For the low end of your $$ range, the Cold Steel SRK is a good knife - 6" blade, kydex sheath, and you can probably find them for $50-60. Some people are going to knock my post because they're "too good" for Cold Steel - but - I think they make an excellent working knife for the money - I have quite a few of their blades (not an SRK, but it fits your description) and love them all.

Fallkniven S1. 5" blade, available with black blade, you can choose between kydex/leather sheath.

To choose a reasonable price,high quality & practiclal ones , eka a10(sweden) can be a suggestion .
leather handle will be swallow ,when it is wetted.
Some usd brand name knives change from usa or Japan producers to China producers that cause the quiality are lowered .
I prefer to use either Europe or Japan products.
Japan producers usually use vg10,,zdp-189,ou31,crowry x steel.
For Europe ones ,sweden steel 12c27 & n690 steel can good choices at reasonable prices.

Good luck in your search!

Take a look at Doug Ritter's RSK Mk3, also known as the "fixed Rittergrip". It is by far my favorite camp knife.

4gs0krc.jpg

This is a semi-custom knife designed by Doug Ritter and manufactured by Benchmade. It is based upon the fixed Griptilian, but has a unique blade, handle, and sheath. A 4.5" S30V full tang high grind blade with a mild finger guard. A very nice 3D-machined G10 handle with a lanyard hole. Nylon sheath with kydex insert. An absolutley beautiful, but very tough, knife for $165.

Much more information at http://www.equipped.org/rsk_mk3.htm .

Hi. I'm looking for a good knive. Survival/Camping knife.

I would like to have a sharp knife, because I bought a Gerber Harsey Hunter with Leather Sheath (http://www.knivesplus.com/GB-5981-Gerber.HTML) And I think my blade is very dull.

Hoewver I don't know where to look

Let's start with getting your current knife sharp and useable again. Do you have a Sharpmaker or other sharpening means?

Then decide among the many good blades out there. You'll get Becker, RTAK, the SRK, Ranger, SOG and the Rats, Busse's and Scrapyard blades. Don't forget the ecxellent Bark River knives. Some I mentioned are out of you listed price range but they will invariably get mentioned anyway.

Gerber gets knocked but if that's what you like more power to you IMO. Same with Cold Steel. Whatever floats your boat.

Do some searches here on fixed blades and also in the Wilderness and Survival forum.

Get to a knife and gun show or cutlery shop so you can finger the blades and see for yourself before you buy. for blades like Ranger and Busse products, you'll have to find someone who already owns one since they are not available over the counter.

Good luck.

If the only problem with the knife that you have is that it is dull, why don't you sharpen it? I know you asked for suggestions for a new knife at a reasonable price but, if it is comfortable to hold, has a sheath that you like, and would do what you want if sharp, then sharpening it would in effect be like getting a new knife, but much less expensive. Of course you would then need a stone or other means of sharpening and that is opening a whole other can of worms.

As you bought a brand new blade I would guess that what you mean as dull is likely to be a working edge and not razor sharp as I guess you would like it.
In this case very little work is required to touch it up and you will get away with shapening it on say the bottom of a cup without going to the expense of buying a stone etc !!!

Another vote for sharpening the knife you have. While Gerber is not what they used to be, that knife looks pretty serviceable even if it doesn't have a newfangled wonder-steel. Maybe think about getting a nice basic stone instead.

But on the other hand, this is an excuse to go out and get a new knife and what's wrong with that? :)

I checked the website of some knifes and here are the oens that I like the most
(In no particularly order)

Doug Ritter's RSK Mk3™ Fixed Blade Knife
by Benchmade™
Really like the sheath too

RSK Mk1 SBT (ComboEdge™ Black Blade)
humm black blade :) However some would say that "partially serrated edge" are useless, since they are supposed to be in front)

MSC Recurve: 3/16 O-1 tool steel with black oxide treatment. 6" recurve blade, Brown Micarta Grips, Black Kydex sheath with Lg Tek-Lok $185.00 plus shipping
Quite nice too.

UTILITY: O-1 tool steel, penetrator tip, Jade Green G-10 handle. Starting at $80.00.

I will continue to check for more models.

To answer:

I don't have a thing to sharpen knifes, and I never tried, honestly. I don't want it to be unequal or become unusable or something.

And yes, I think it's more of a "working edge"... although I wanted a razor-sharp blade. That's why it seems very dull to me I think. However it feels really good in hand, I really liek the handle, size of the blade, ect.

I also bought a Gerber ... forgot the name. Small black blade folder. Was not really dull, but didnt last long and became dull. So, I'm not lulcky with sharp edges, it seems.

Is the knife that you have dull enough to be unuseable? If so, then you have nothing to lose by sharpening it. if not, then it will be before long. Eventually you will need to sharpen whatever knife you buy to replace the one you have. Even a knife kept in a safe (and never used) will eventually need to be sharpened. And, there is no guarantee that the one that you buy will be as sharp as you want. I don't see Gillette listed as a manufacturer of any of the knives you have your eye on, so you don't seem to be in the market for a disposable. Might as well spend the money now and get a sharpener of some sort. Otherwise, some time in the future you will hae two dull knives, no sharp ones, no sharpener, and be back here looking for another knife. You can get a set of serviceable stones, crock stics, a sharpmaker, or whatever (save an edgepro) for less than the $120 that you plan to spend. If you really want a new knife, I'm sure someone will recommend one that will really turn you on, but my recommendation is still a sharpener.

Look for a Spyderco Sharpmaker and learn to use it. It comes with an instructional DVD.

You can send your dull knives to me as you get new ones.....:D
