Good large unintimidating folder?

What about a 111mm Victorinox, like the Plain-Edge One-Hand Trekker? Liner lock, has extra tools on it, and that swiss army logo that puts people at ease. And you have some dollars left over to save up for a sexier knife for weekends.

I am having a hard time understanding the issue. If you need a knife for work, who the hell would care what it looks like? That does not compute. Maybe people in South Carolina think differently. I can't imagine anyone saying (or even thinking) anything about a knife, in any context.

The American Lawmans coating is not very resilient and could be entirely rubbed off with sand paper in about ten minutes. Good knife though.

OP, how about a Spyderco Military? You might find a used one on the exchange around your budget.

Good point about the AL.

I know it's much lower in price than what you need OP, but in addition to the Military you could consider the Reslience. Long wide blade, fairly innocuous (at least to me) construction on it, too. It's in Spyderco's budget line so you might not be into it... but it performs well for me.

You didn't specify one hand opening. Maybe the Buck 110 or one of the old Schrades of the same size for you big mitts. One poster mentioned it was not an intimidating knife. As I recall, laws actually referened the Buck 110 because when it came out, it was being used by criminals and would be criminals.

You might take a look at just how long of a handle length you really need. It sounds like you want big handles and don't really care about blade length. The 110 is about as big as it gets. How about a short fixed blade?

The little Cold Steel Tuff Lite is a 4 finger knife with about a 2.5" blade. I'm impressed with this knife for ~$30. I have been fiddling with it for the last couple of days. With the sheepsfoot blade, it is not very intimidating. But it is great for actually cutting.

Unfortunately in many states guns are more acceptable than knives as far as the law is concerned. I carry a dragonfly with my larger EDCs just so people don't freak out in public. Dropping my girl friend off for work this week while flicking my paramilitary. There was an older lady on the sidewalk waiting for me to backup who saw. The look on her face was like she really thought I was a murderer.

Yeah you do that in NY, it's menacing and you will get arrested. Better to just keep it in your pocket til it's needed.

Oh man NYC is the worst for that. When I was there for a few months I actually didn't carry a knife. I had a mini crowbar that rode in my pants. Not a weapon unless I use it.

Sheesh the guy specifies that the knife must not look 'tactical' and people are recommending the Spyderco Military and Paramilitary 2?

I'm with those who immediately thought of the Endura in one of its nice friendly colour options. Great steel, great ergos (I'm 6'4" as well) at a good price.

If it's big, it's gonna be intimidating. Only ones I can think of that are possibly not going to be, would be the larger traditional Opinel knife models.

The problem is that any large folder is likely to be intimidating to most people, so in that case go for "pretty" colors that make the knife seem less intimidating to sheeples. A good choice would be colored enduras like orange or blue, or if you could find one an orange millie would also be excellent, theres plenty of other brightly colored options around but I dont really pay attention to those, I prefer more subtle earthy colors haha.
