good neck knife ?

My daily neck knife is a Spyderco plain edge Native. In my home state of WA carrying a fixed blade in urban/suburban areas is generally frowned upon by LEOs. My solution: have Eric at On/Scene Tactical[Normark] make a custom neck sheath for the Spydie Native!:)[Thanks Eric] It carries the knife tip down so that when I access it with either hand the thumb falls on the opening hole naturally. It is very comfortable, and I don't have to worry about gutting myself during the draw because there is no exposed blade. The overall length of the package, including the sheath, is 4.9".:D

Give Eric a call or email for him to make a sheath for your favorite folder.;)

Livesay WOO with cord wrapped handle. Nice secure sheath, order a dog tag chain if you dont want paracord for the neck cord. No magic, just a great 1095 tanto blade, chisel grind, great sheath, all parkerized flat black. If you want a mincarta handle, just get the executive model. The standard sells for under 30 bucks cord wrapped. -

Oh, by the way, the secret to drawing any neck knife like the woo is to use one hand and pull out and away from yourself. Using two hands and trying to grab the sheath is a sure way to get cut. No matter where its hanging on your neck or under a shirt just pull out from your body at the same time as down and you got it. Might nick a shirt at worst, but not you.

my Stiff KISS obviously could be used as a neck knife, but seems just too long to me. Anyone else wear one that way?

I used my stiff kiss as my primary knife during a week long camping trip and found it to be very comfortable. After a little while, I hardly noticed it was there. Neck knives seem very convenient, but I still feel a bit too self conscious having a knife around my neck to wear one on a regular basis(in public at least). Nice alternative to a bolo tie though...

The first thing to consider about a neck knife is its intended function. Are you buying one purely for personal defense? If so, what defensive style will you use? For instance, I am not trained in any style of knife-fighting or self-defense using an edged weapon. Therefore, My choice for a purely self-defensive carry is a fully-serrated S&W version of the La Griff (yes, S&W sucks, but the handle is better than none - Emerson - and not as bulky as the CRKT Bear Claw. And it's really cheap but 440C steel). That design is almost impossible for an attacker to dislodge from the defender's hand by impact, unlike the average boot-knife, and it is easy to weild it and make devastating cuts, even though the blade size is small. And there is no possibility that your hand will slide onto the blade while using it, something that also can't be said as certainly with most neckers (consider the Woo or Handiman for example - they would make me a little nervous on a full stab because there is no real guard).

All that said, perhaps you are trained in a style that efficiently uses a small blade for self-defense, in which case go with what you are trained in. Also, the commercial LaGriffe models aren't necessarily the best utility knives, so if you are going to use this knife for utility purposes than maybe you want a different knife - or one utility pocket knife and one necker reserved purely for self-defense.

IMHO now:

Neck knives should be:
1. lightweight
2. about 3" max blade length
3. secure grip, some kind of index finger "guard"
4. secure sheath
5. something stainless (or at least D2 or higher)

Stuff that fits my preference of what makes a good neck knife, sorta in order of my preference, but they are all nice IMO:

Darrel Ralph custom Arclite in CPM420V. The production version from Camillus in 420HC or whatever is a great buy, but I don't own one so can't comment on sheath.

RJ Martin's Handiman (would prefer ATS34 or 440C to D2 but that wouldn't stop me). I don't own one of these but have handled and would own one at right price.

Bud Nealy mini Pesh Kabz

Crawford's skeletonized version in ATS-34.

Kit Carson's F4 but in 420V. I like the large one better actually:

Mike Yurco makes a couple nice ones in 440C, but I don't have a pic of mine. Yurco is kind of unknown, don't think he has a web site... he was at Guild Shows and got one there.

Emerson LaGriffe is certainly very small and light. Kind of a wicked little claw as a last ditch, but not much of a utility knife. QA/QC is less an issue on EKI's fixed blades it appears:

There are other good ones....those above kinda illustrate what I like to see in a design.

I've never understood how people willingly carry anything over ~7" OAL or out of thick stock (especially unskeletonized) around their necks (I'm 5'-11") or out of carbon steel (e.g. Livesay) in the warm months. Sweat is full of salt. Need I say more.

For $20-$30 range, the Camillus ArcLite is best overall package I've seen so far.

I wear a REKAT hobbit fang. It's great if you can still find one. The Arclite is great, I just wish it had better steel.

My favorite is an old Livesay A6 steel woo.I've got several others but this is the one I usually carry.tom.

and thanks for asking

long utility recurve blade, short but secure grip!
That´s a perfect neckknife FOR ME.

:D

I'm a relative newbie, but have just ordered a Busse Assault Shaker. It comes with a rig that allows neck carry, although I'm not planning to do so.

A few questions regarding neck carry:

-How effective is neck carrying for self defense / backup?
-Isn't getting under a shirt to get at the knife a bit difficult / slow?
-Are there people that just carry the knife in the neck sheath outside their shirt, or some other way that allows faster access?

Just wondering -

My fave neck knives are all Fred Perrin's.

On the left is my Buffalo Horn Bowie Griffe.
Center is my Perrin extended bali which Fred created a kydex neck rig for. Beneath the bali is my Street Surgeon.
On the right is my sterile G10 Griffe.

Ok,I have and use,La Griffe,Hobbits fang, and a Running Dog traditional tanto. The first 2 I wear around my neck the Running dog horizontal on belt(fast right or left handed, blends in with belt and comfortable). The La Griffe is the lightest and disapears under a t-shirt.I like all 3 and recomend them you'll have to try some and find out for yourself, many come with sheiths that can be worn differant ways.

Horus, darn you after seeing that photo looks like I'll be getting a Garm fighter also.:)

You might want to wait for the:

Microtech Medallion and CRKT Kit Carson F4. The F4 will be a bargin. The Camillius Arclite is great and it is only $20.00 at knifecenter.com. Rekat has some good ones at a low price too. The MOD Scorpion is a very nice knife. The MT Medallion is the one I am waiting for.

the CRKT Bear claw is great for the price, and smith and wesson makes a cool skeletonized neck knife for about 25 bucks

Brandon:rolleyes:

bigbore.45 - what the heck is that? It's cool looking, but it looks WAY huge for a neck knife! That is one cool and different blade.

I know it's a hair expensive, but I'de suggest the Busse Assault Shaker, thats what I want to replace my Emerson La Griffe.

An additional suggestion; a neck knife from my wish list:

Mike Snody, Compadre

3 ¼ inch hollow ground BG-42 steel bead blasted with serrated thumb ramp.
Handle is pinned Carbon Fiber with lanyard hole.
Overall Length: 7" Weight 3.6 oz. Ships with MP-5 multi wear sheath system with tech-lock.

Thanks for your posts. I'm now thinking of buying a Camillus ArcLite although i'm not very happy about the 420 Steel.
It's also difficult to get an american custum knife in germany, because of the taxes and shipping.

Can anybody post about the quality of the kydex sheath of the Arclite ?

thanks again for your replies, function

nice you asked,
i always was in love with the Fred Perrin knives with the ring and short grip, but dont like the claw blade because of bad utility use.
Then i saw the (for me) perfect blade-design from a member of www.MesserForum.net , called Haudegen.
I knew at once that i wanted his blade with Perrins grip,
so i asked him for permission, and a very famous german knifemaker, Günter Böhlke, to make me one.
Look here: http://www.boehlke-messer.de/start_en.htm
After 6, YES SIX WEEKS, i got it.
(And for a price less than a MT LCC or a REKAT Sifu would cost here!)Look here for the knife:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=161846
or more pics in my profile.
Because Haudegen called his Design-idea #14 now i call the knife #14 !
