good neck knife ?

The Arclite is great, I just wish it had better steel.

I agree. But ...

... 420HC is kind of underrated, and I'm guilty of bashing it myself, formerly.

If Camillus heat treats 420HC to Rc59 or higher, this should perform with 440B/C and AUS-8 in very general terms. Yeah, nothing but chrome carbides, but corrosion resistance on 420HC is excellent, better than 440* or AUS-8, and at least for me, a neck knife is carried more than it is used for utility. I mean, pull shirt, reach under, pull out blade, clean fingernails/open box? Not in public, and I always carry a folder even if I am carrying a neck knife.

For the money, the Camillus Arclite is a good package. (having said that, I don't own it, I splurged on the 420V from Darrel... aaahhhh :D )

Camillus does not say how hard Rc they go on 420HC on their web page. Rc 56 would be kinda sucky. Rc59 would be a pretty good. For simple steels, hardness makes the edge.

And that's the point of the 0.45% - 0.5% carbon in 420HC is to get to Rc59 vs regular crappy 420 and 420J (0.15% C), etc.

For the money, the Arclite is very hard to beat... I haven't seen anything that does, not to my eye anyway.

A few questions regarding neck carry:

-How effective is neck carrying for self defense / backup?
-Isn't getting under a shirt to get at the knife a bit difficult / slow?
-Are there people that just carry the knife in the neck sheath outside their shirt, or some other way that allows faster access?

Some people may carry on neck for primary weapon, but I have to think real hard on situations that would make me carry on neck as primary (...uh...still thinking ... nudist colony? That clipit would kinda pinch :D ). Some cops may have their belts so loaded that it's a primary knife... but ... I'd find room on belt or in pocket if I were a cop.

I nearly always can carry a folder in a pocket or on a waistband. So neck is either:
1. backup to folder for trips into the city
2. used for convenience while sitting with shirt untucked...canoe trip in swim trunks, or taking a page from Bob Kasper, take neck knife off when you climb in the car and hang from steering column.

Those that are serious about neck carry can develop a rapid draw, either by wearing shirt out or by learning to rip shirt out of pants and grab knife safely & quickly.

I'm a big guy and it is really hot here most times, so I wear a shirt made for tails out wear alot. I lift the bottom of the shirt and that is faster than lifting out from the top before drawing.
The Woo from Newt Livesay is 1095@ 59-60Rc. They hold up very well and even though it is hot and humid here, I have no rust problems. I just wipe it down with a tuff-cloth once a month or so.

not sure if anyone is going to read this, but

Arclite is ok for the money (20 bucks is nothing compared to what you could spend)

Mine was not very sharp out of the box, my shapmaker put an ok edge on it (not as good as it did on 154cm, carbonV, and GIN-1), it seems to be holding this edge well.

Handle is a bit on the small side for my large hands, but after a cord wrap it feels just right.

The sheath is cheap, but it gets the job done, it got my knife dirty, some sort of sticky residue is on it.

I hated the writing on the knife so i sanded it off.

everything considered it is the best $20 knife i have seen.

I was working on a drawing of a kneck knife based on the arclite, i was trying to correct the problems that i find in the knife, when i was done i found out that my drawing looked just like a microtech medallion.

I have several that work just dandy for me:

Fallkniven's WM-1

Camillus CUDA Arclite

Emerson's LaGriffe

BTW Great idea about the Garm as a necker! I might just have to have a closer look at that one next time I'm at Ruff's.

You might also want to look at Cold Steel's Spike. It is a bit long (4" blade) but it is one mean mutha of a defensive blade taken down to the barest of bones. About $20.00. It was designed by Barry Dawson too.

Also, if you can find one, the REKAT Hobbit's Fang is a winner in my book. It is smallish, but it has a lot of cutting power and is curved ever so wickedly.

  • Busse Assault Shaker (2.5" INFI utility blade, 3-finger skeleton handle) - my "chew it up & spit it out" utility/boxcutter knife
  • Newt Livesay Executive NRGS (4" 1095 drop point, thinned edge, single-finger groove micarta scales) - pure cutter/slicer

It's my Neck Ninja, a smaller version of my American Ninja.
3 5/8" blade,<7 1/2" OAL....Lots of blade in a small package. The standard model is made of 1/8" D2 with LOTS of material removed from the tang to make them as light as possible. The epoxy coated chord wrap over the anodized Ti. panels make for GREAT grip!!
This knife carries well in it's neck sheath OR a horizontal belt sheath.

I like (really like) the Camillus Mini Talon in talonite. I take this guy everywhere without the fear of any type of rust. It holds an edge very well and will cut and cut and cut...

The Arclite is a great product at a great price. Wrapping the handle with thin cord as was suggested/demonstrated on this board recently makes the handle much more comfortable without bulk. Remeber to leave the handle hole that enters the sheath cord free. ;)
It holds a useable edge for defense even if it is 420HC.

Cold Steel products like the Spike and the Pendleton Mini Hunter(AUS8A) also make viable candidates.
