Hi All,

Im in the market for a new knife. it will be mounted on my chest webbing as a utility/ fighting knife. In NZ we do alot of jungle exercises so this knife has to be tough.

IM all about indestructability and the ability to hold a good edge.
I like blades from 5-7 inch max, fixed blade, I love quality I want to have this knife for the rest of my life

price $200-300

I was set on a green beret knife but after your input and a very compelling video ive changed my mind

Any recomendations?

Busse satin Jack Tactical (SJTAC)...you should be able to find one close to your price range

Swamp Rat RatManDu. The steel will rust more readily than the INFI on the SJTAC, but still a contender. Another choice would be a Busse Boss Jack, if you prefer that blade style over the RMD or SJTAC.

The exercises range from general jungle warfare, to live firing, to survival and scout training. Pretty much it involves being wet miserable and hungry for weeks on end. Gotta love the Infantry

I would definitely do the A1 then and use any extra money left over for a custom kydex sheath, sharpening supplies, nice boot socks, etc.

My recommendation is to get in touch with one or more of the many fabulous custom makers that frequent BF and have one made by them to your specifications. Just about any of them will be able to make a SUPERB blade that will be nicer than just about any factory blade, under $300.

If I was buying an off the shelf blade for something like you're talking about, I'd go with a no frills blade like one of the offerings from Entrek Knives...440C for good edge holding and corrosion resistance in wet areas and a bullet proof warranty from the owner. $125-$200 or so depending on model.

since you liked the Yarborough what about a Gerber LHR?

i handled 1 yesterday and was impressed, the sheath made it for me.

Fallkniven a1 all the way. Good luck with the infantry. I have a while to go I join, but soon. If you want/need it to have a coated blade, you should know the coating is nothing amazing, but its as much knife as you would ever need..

Hey cramsey3006,

Ive googled custom knife makers and it will take me a year to get through them all. Could you recommend anyone specifically and fire me some contact details.

Sargent666,
Kyley harris gets his steel from svord here in nz, I have quite a few svord knives that I swear by for hunting. Does kyley have a contact number or email?

spydercomil,
Good luck with the army bud you will have some of the best and worst times of your life to date.

regards, Stew

PS I will post some pics of some prototype knives ive been working on for you all to have a look at when there done.

Here's a short list of where I'd be looking.

(I have one of these in a hunter and it hasn't made me go "OOOHHHH" but there are a lot of people who like their stuff quite a bit).

I also LOVE (yes, as in drool over and dream about it) the AG Russell Field Knife 2.

Search for Field Knife 2. They have the regular blade and then they have cosmetic seconds for $30 less.

The LHR is 420HC stainless (Tactical Knives write up about the knife). The blade is just over 6" with a weight of just over 11 ounces. I'm going to guess that it's 3/16" thick. Anything thicker would weigh more for a knife that size. Who knows about the HT? Gerber never says what the blades test at any more.

I love the design, but I always hesitate a bit when a manufacturer doesn't state the steel that they use, or any HT info. What do they think to gain by keeping it a secret?

IMO, $112 is too much money for something in 420HC, I don't care who the designer is or who made the knife.

This is what I use, its a Winkler Knives II Belt knife. This knife is very similar to the standard issue model that Mr Winkler currently provides to active duty operators within Naval Special Warfare. The 3/16" steel is 5160 with a no-glare finish. A full tapered tang means great balance. The knife measures 9" overall- blade length is 4 3/4". Handle choices are curly maple, black micarta or recycled rubber. Kydex lined leather sheath that can be worn vertically or horizontally for right or left hand draw with simple adjustments. Brown leather sheath for wooden handles, black for rubber or micarta.

I have taken mine on patrol in the jungles of Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico. Its a very good knife.

P.S. Mr Winkler gives a military discount just email him. He's a very good person to deal whit; This knife is in the 3OO dollar range.

These knives are built to last, and they get an antiqued look to the blade from use that’s just beautiful, I’m going to hand down mi knife and hatchet to mi kid on day. Mr. Winkler makes his knives using a lot of fed back from professionals that actually use these knives in the field. Most of his designs are inspired in the frontier knives that people used back in the day, simple and effective.
