Hello guys,

Im a new user from Europe. I was looking for a good survival/bowie knife and seem to find alot from this site. So i decided to make an account. Like i said i am looking for a good bowie knife. I came across the Becker BK9, Kabar Big Brother, Kabar Heavy Bowie, Ontario SP10 and the remake of the Rambo knife. I have narrowed this down to the BK9 and the Rambo knife. Actually only the bk9 is a realistic choice, because i want a carbon steel one. I was going to get the bk9, but i kinda think that its "too small". I really like big thick blades, i have nothing with smaller 7" blades. I know the bk9 is already huge for most people, but i really want a 10" blade.
So my question is, do you guys know a 10'' bowie knive, wich is broader than the bk9, has a full profile and full length tang, is made out of 1095 carbon steel, and is 1/4 thick ? My price range is 150 dollars, or 130 euros.

Edit : Forgot to say that i am looking for a flat ground one

Forget the Rambo knives. The BK7 and the BK9 are VERY good knives and here in the USA a real bargain. They are not full flat grind but the main bevel is very wide. The BK7, which is more or less equivelent to the Ka-Bar, is a little bigger and wider than the Ka-Bar. So the blade geometry of those Beckers will perform as if they were actually flat, as far as I am concerned.

The thing of it is, you can pay a whole lot of money for a Bigger Bowie knife than the BK9 but you won't actually have more Bowie in you hand...if that makes sense...and you can buy a lot more stuff with the money you would save.

There are also a lot of Western Model 49s out there on the used market. I sold mine for about $80.

Kabar Heavy Bowie.

(Though...what it sounds like what you are really looking for is an axe. Unless survival for you involves just bashing the bejeebus outta stuff. :))

Ontario SP50 is 1/4" thick. It's a little shorter than you want but it has a full flat grind. Nice knife.

+1 on MMHW....they are relatively inexpensive and great quality blades in 5160. Also, the ESEE Junglas is very impressive and well within your price-range. Welcome and best of luck!!

Can't help you on the flat grind, but another choice would be to look for a Western W49.

The MMHW White River I have is a one off FFG, but it doesn't meet your budget....

How about a Condor Boomslang? I've never seen one in person but they are large and affordable.

If you are stuck on 1095 than that rules out some excellent knives with very good, perhaps better than 1095 steel alloys. Some are as good, some maybe better but they will pretty much all perform as well as 1095, or better depending on your use.

Several Ontario knives in 5160. I like the Ranger RD 9, but there are more to choose from including the generation 2 models, all in 5160.

Excellent Browning Crowell Barker competition in 1080-1085 that otherwise meets your specs for about $130 stateside.

A bit above your cutoff is the L6 Svord Von Tempsky, Not finely finished but tough as hell, and an excellent performer.

If you can find an old Western 49 ( not the newer Camillus stainless models made before Camillus folded here in the US)

The Becker BK9 is excellent. At 9 inches it's not that far off from the 10" you prefer.

Back to Ontario they do have something that fits your needs in the Ontario SP 10 Marine raider bowie , 10" blade, .250. 1095, and looks similar to the old Western 49, but the Ontario is coated black. It's price is excellent at just under $60 U.S.

Also a A SP 5 Bowie , 10 inches, .250, and a price of $50 US.

KaBar has several, including an over 9 inch "big brother" which looks like a large sized Kabar marine bowie but has a serrated edge on the top of the blade in the rear area.

There are so many more to choose from.

What would I select from this list?

Price? Ontario SP10
Price no limit: Svord Von Tempsky at around $175
or the Hogue 9 inch A2 blade at around $200
Other top choices Becker 9 inch, Ontario RD 9 in 5160, or the Crowell Barker Browning Competition, probably the sharpest, deepest cutter out of the box.

To be honest though I own most and other than the Von Tempsky I can't pick a favorite unless you count my <$500 Fehrman Final Judgement in 3V..

I second this reccomendation, they are very solid, easy to find, and cheap.

Welcome to the forums,

Dang man, someone sold a custom hollow handle survival knife in the exchange recently. I want to say it was Bud Nealy, but I cannot be sure. It looked like the classic Rambo knife!!

BK9 for sure...
